The Office of Thrift Supervision has ordered the closure of two more banks, bringing to 87, the number of US bank failures so far this year.
Sioux City, Iowa-based Vantus Bank and Oak Forest, Ill.-based InBank were closed by regulators on Friday.
As of August 28, Vantus Bank had roughly USD 368 million in deposits, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC). This is while InBank had USD 199 million in deposits as of August 3.
To protect the depositors, the FDIC entered into a purchase and assumption agreement with the Great Southern Bank, Springfield, Missouri, to assume all of the deposits of Vantus Bank.
The FDIC said that the two bank failures will cost the federal deposit insurance fund USD 234 million.
Despite the positive attitude in the White House, the US seems to be dipping deeper into recession, with more banks and jobs lost every day.
The US unemployment rate spiked to 9.7 percent in August as the once biggest economic power axed 216,000 jobs, according to a Labor Department report released on Friday.
The figure represented the highest level of unemployment since 1983, when it was at 10.1 percent.
Figures showed 276,000 jobs lost in July and 463,000 in June, higher than prior estimates of 247,000 and 443,000, respectively.
One puppet government police member was killed and two others wounded when unidentified gunmen attacked to one checkpoint in western Mosul City.
The sources said: "Unidentified gunmen attacked to checkpoint at Ra's al Jaddah area of western Mosul where there was fire exchange. The group escaped from the area safely."

Villagers claim 150 civilians dead in NATO Air raid

KUNDUZ CITY (PAN): Residents of Chahar Dara district in northern Kunduz province say more than 150 civilians were killed and 20 others wounded in Friday’s air strike by NATO-led forces.
The bombing in Haji Aman village came as insurgents and residents emptied oil into jerry canes from tankers hijacked by Taliban militants from the Kunduz-Baghlan Highway.
Inhabitants of the area told Pajhwok Afghan News all those killed in the bombardment were civilians and there were no Taliban at the site at the time the attack took place. Fighters had left the scene after they asked the people to take fuel for free.
An elder from Sarak-i-Bala neighbourhood, Abdul Rahim, said 15 children were among the 50 people of Yaqubi village killed in the bombing raid.
The man, who lost two sons in the incident, argued: "Poverty brought us to this stage." No guerrillas were among the dead, he said, explaining the fighters well before the deadly assault.
A 50-year-old woman bitterly cried while standing in front of her ruined house. She said her three sons, husband and a grandson perished in the bombardment. Locals showed this reporter as many as 50 graves of civilian victims.
In the Maulvi Naeem village, residents said 20 civilians were killed in the incident. Haji Najmuddin, a tribal elder, lost two nephews. He claimed chemicals bombs were dropped on the villagers. Clothes of his nephews were not damaged but their bodies were badly charred, the man argued.
This reporter saw the graves of those killed in the air strike. Seventy of the fatalities were from Yaqubi and Maulvi Naeem villages and the rest from three other areas.
Meanwhile, Kunduz Governor Eng. Muhammad Omar said a delegation from Kabul had arrived in the district to investigate the incident and determine the exact number of civilian deaths.
Deputy Prosecutor of Int'l Criminal Court discusses the Palestinian Authority appeal to join the court. Lia Tarachansky speaks to Fatou Bensouda, the Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) about the Palestinian Authority's appeal to join the group of nations over which the court has jurisdiction. Bensouda says that before the ICC can investigate the perpetration of war crimes during Israel's recent attack on Gaza, the court would have to rule on whether it has jurisdiction in the Palestinian Territories. For that, there would have to be clear borders identified, a task the UN would have to take on.
Once the court rules on jurisdiction it would be able to prosecute anyone who committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, or genocide within the territory, even if (such as in the case of Israel) the perpetrator is not part of the International Court.

Two tanks of the enemy have been destroyed in this attack. After the attack, the enemy cordoned off the area and no one is allowed to go close to the site. Mujahideen Attack Two District Headquarters in Nangarhar Friday 04-09-2009, Mujahideen in Nangarhar have attacked Dar Noor and Pachir Agam district headquarters. According to the report, foreigners were inside the buildings when Mujahideen attacked the district headquarters but the exact number of casualties is no known. In Pachir Agam, five puppet ploice terrorists were killed when Mujahideen attacked the district headquarters. Similarly, buildings of both districts were damaged as a result of the attacks. Mujahideen Capture Four Security outposts in Kunar Friday 04-09-2009, Mujahideen in Kunar province report that they launched parallel operations against security outposts of the puppet regime in Nawar Pass, a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Using light and heavy weapons, the Mujahideen succeeded to capture the outposts. All terrorists manning the outpost have fled, leaving their weapons and equipments which Mujahideen took as booty after the capturing of the outposts. More than 150 Civilians martyred in Bombardment in Kunduz Friday 04-09-2009, Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan report that the invading enemy aircrafts bombarded civilian people near the bazaar of Ali Abad district in Kunduz province, killing 90 civilians including children and women. The enemy planes killed the defenseless people at the time of sunset when the people were to break their day-long fast. This is not the first time that the enemy kills civilians in such a great number. Before this the enemy has shown its bestiality by killing more than 100 people in Farah province. Great losses incurred to enemy in Kandahar Friday morning 04-09-2009 at approximately 8 am local time a mine blast took place in Bar Khalil Ghwandai of Khakreez area of Kandahar province destroying a puppet police Ranger vehicle killing eight puppets onboard. American occupation army confessed on Thursday that two soldiers were killed and five others wounded in Diyala Province. According to the statement of occupation army: "On Wednesday the event occurred when military vehicle turned down in Diyala Province!"
The statement did not refer to the reason of this incident why and when it happened. However local sources and observers indicate the characteristic of fabricated statements of the occupation that tries to hidden the bitter realities at the Iraqi ground at the hands of resistance.
New atrocity in Afghanistan US airstrike incinerates scores of civilians

An airstrike by US warplanes operating as part of the NATO occupation in northern Afghanistan killed more than 100 people early Friday morning, most of them civilians who were incinerated when two gasoline tankers, hit by bombs, exploded in flames.
Large numbers of severely wounded have been taken to the local hospital in trucks and carts.
The two tankers, hijacked by Taliban guerrillas, became stuck in the mud trying to cross the Kunduz River. The insurgents abandoned the tankers after opening the valves, and the local population of the village of Omar Kheil rushed from their homes to pour off gasoline into any containers they could find.
The British Guardian quoted Moeen Marastial, a member of parliament from Kunduz, as saying: "Local people are telling me 130 people have been killed despite all the promises of Nato to do fewer bombardments and reduce civilian casualties. There will be a reaction to this. It is a very bad day for international forces in Afghanistan."
Another local MP, Mohammed Amin Qaneh, said: "We are very upset; a lot of ordinary people have been killed. Why did they have to bomb the tankers? Does Nato put the price of oil higher than the price of blood? We want justice; we want those responsible punished."
Abdul Moman Omar Kheil, member of the Kunduz provincial council and a native of the village where the airstrike happened, explained the circumstances of the mass killing, telling the press that many local residents were awake at the time because of a late-night wedding party and celebrations marking Ramadan, the month-long period when practicing Muslims only eat and drink at night.
This account was confirmed by a Taliban spokesman who gave a statement to the Associated Press saying that guerrillas had captured the two tankers as they were being driven along a supply line from Tajikistan to the Afghan capital, Kabul.
While this scramble for precious fuel was underway, at about 2:30 a.m. local time, German military forces (=Nazi's) who patrol in Kunduz province as part of the NATO occupation called in an air attack, which was carried out by two US F-15 fighter-bombers. Each jet hit the tankers with a 500-pound bomb.
There were hellish scenes at the hospital in Kunduz, the provincial capital, about 15 miles north of the village. "Wounded people with extensive burns crowded a hospital in Kunduz," the French news agency AFP reported. "An AFP reporter said around eight were in terrible condition— the skin burnt black and peeling off to expose raw red muscle. Others were silent in agony with incinerated clothes stuck to their flesh."
An eyewitness, Mohammad Daud, 32, told AFP villagers rushed to one of the trucks when it got stuck in the river to take free fuel at the Taliban’s invitation. "Everyone around the fuel tanker died," he said. "Nobody was in one piece. Hands, legs and body parts were scattered everywhere. Those who were away from the fuel tanker were badly burnt."
Reuters reported: "The desperately poor Afghan villagers heard that the Taliban had abandoned loaded fuel tankers by the river and thought it was their lucky day. Hundreds ran to fill jugs of the valuable stuff. Suddenly, a U.S. F-15 fighter jet roared over and opened fire. Mohammad Deen heard the explosion. When the flames died away by Friday morning, charred corpses were still strewn on the riverbank.
"Villagers could scarcely conceal their rage. 'It’s a tragedy, and people are angry, very angry. The international community came here to help, but they are not helping anymore, they are only dropping bombs on us,’ said Deen. Video footage filmed by Afghans at the scene the next morning showed piles of charred bodies lying by the river, beside chunks of twisted metal. The frame of one of the tanker trucks still smoldered."
NATO officials initially claimed all those killed were Taliban fighters. A German army spokeswoman told the media, "We are fairly certain that they were all insurgents, but we are not 100 percent sure." She added, "After assessing that only insurgents were in the area, the local ISAF commander ordered an airstrike which destroyed the fuel trucks and a large number of insurgents were killed and injured."
The puppet Afghan government of President Hamid Karzai echoed these claims, but the story subsequently underwent repeated adjustment as victims flooded the hospital in Kunduz and the scale of the catastrophe for the civilian population became undeniable.
The latest US-NATO atrocity gives the lie to the claims by the Obama administration and the Pentagon that the escalation of American military intervention in Afghanistan is aimed at defending the population from the resurgence of the Taliban, whose regime the Bush administration overthrew in 2001.
The day before the airstrike near Kunduz, Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a Pentagon press conference that he had forwarded to President Obama a review of conditions in Afghanistan by the theater commander, General Stanley McChrystal.
Refusing to answer questions about how many additional troops McChrystal (=Nazi ) would seek, Mullen said, "What’s more important than the number of troops he may or may not ask for is how he intends to use them. It should come as no surprise to anyone that he intends to use those forces under his command to protect the Afghan people."
After the atrocity at Omar Kheil, one could justly conclude that no worse fate can befall a people than to be singled out for such "protection" by American imperialism.
The location of the mass killing has military as well as political significance. Kunduz province is in the northern tier of Afghanistan, the region largely populated by minority Tajiks and Uzbeks, and long considered stable, at least by comparison with the Pashtun-populated regions of the south and east.
There have been a series of violent incidents in Kunduz, suggesting a growing ability by the Taliban or other anti-occupation forces to strike throughout the country. Former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, leader of the Jamiat-i-Islami Afghanistan party, narrowly escaped assassination August 13, when his convoy was ambushed on the Kabul-Kunduz highway in Aliabad district. Rabbani was campaigning for the election of Karzai’s strongest opponent in the August 20 presidential election, former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah. Three weeks earlier, Karzai’s running-mate, Mohammad Qasim Fahim, escaped a similar attack in the Khanabad district of Kunduz.
According to an August 31r eport by McClatchy newspapers, the Taliban resurgence has become a strategic threat to the US-NATO occupation. McClatchy reported:
"Taliban insurgents have taken over parts of two northern provinces from which they were driven in 2001, threatening to disrupt NATO’s new supply route from Central Asia and expand a war that has largely been confined to Afghanistan’s southern half, US and Afghan officials said. Insurgents operating out of Baghlan district along the highway from Tajikistan launched coordinated attacks during the Aug. 20 presidential elections, killing the district police chief and a civilian, while losing a dozen of their own men, local officials said. It was the worst bloodshed reported in the country that day.
"Violence has been on the rise in recent months, however, as the Taliban and al-Qaida-linked foreign fighters have staged hit-and-run attacks, bombings and rocket strikes on German, Belgian and Hungarian forces in Baghlan and neighboring Kunduz provinces. The insurgents now control three Pashtun-dominated districts in Kunduz and Baghlan-i-Jadid, a foothold in a region that was long considered safe."
McClatchy quoted an unnamed "senior U.S. intelligence official" pointing out that the insurgents were targeting a recently developed logistics route that supplements the main route from the Pakistani port of Karachi and up through the Khyber Pass, which has been under increasing Taliban attack on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
The new route consists of roads from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan which merge and run south through the Hindu Kush mountains to Kabul and the main US airbase and supply center at Bagram. "The concern is if we don’t stunt the (Taliban) growth, it could cause problems with our northern distribution network," the intelligence official told the news service.
The British newspaper Guardian, in its report on the Omar Kheil massacre, noted, "Today’s reports talk about the Taliban, but Uzbek jihadists with close links to al-Qaida are said to be spreading into the area. Whoever they are, it is one more indicator that security is crumbling across Afghanistan."
This latest atrocity marks the worst massacre of Afghan civilians by US-led NATO forces since May, when airstrikes by US warplanes against villages in western Farah province claimed the lives of 140 people, according to an investigation by the Afghan government.

Palestinian medical sources reported Saturday morning that a Palestinian child died of wounds sustained Friday evening after Israeli soldiers opened fire at him in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
The Child was identified as Ghazi Maher Al Zaaanen, 13. He was shot in the head by Israeli troops stationed east of Beit Hanoun town.
He was moved to Al Shifa hospital where he was operated and remained in a critical condition for several hours before he was pronounced dead.
His body was moved to Beit Hanoun Hospital in preparation for his burial.
In related news, Israeli soldiers fired three artillery shells at Beit Lahia town, in the northern part of the Gaza Strip causing damage; no injuries were reported.

Fasting in Ramadaan is one of the pillars on which Islam is built. Allaah tells us that He has prescribed it for the believers of this ummah [nation], as He prescribed it for those who came before them.
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“O you who believe! Observing As-Sawm (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious”
[al-Baqarah 2:183]
“The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Sawm (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allaah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allaah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allaah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him”
[al-Baqarah 2:185]
Al-Bukhaari (8) and Muslim (16) narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
Islam is built on five (pillars):
the testimony that there is no god but Allaah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah;
establishing prayer;
paying zakaah;
Hajj; and
fasting Ramadaan.
Whoever does not fast has abandoned one of the pillars of Islam, and is committing a grave major sin. Indeed some of the salaf were of the view that he is a kaafir [disbeliever] and apostate – we seek refuge with Allaah from that.
Abu Ya’la narrated in his Musnad from Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“The bonds of Islam and the bases of religion are three, on which Islam was founded. Whoever gives up one of them becomes a kaafir thereby and it is permissible to shed his blood: the testimony that there is no god but Allaah, the prescribed prayers and fasting Ramadaan.”
This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Dhahabi, and as hasan by al-Haythami in Majma’ al-Zawaa’id, 1/48, and by al-Mundhiri in al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, no. 805, 1486. Classed as da’eef by al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah, no. 94.
Al-Dhahabi said in al-Kabaa’ir, p. 64.
Whoever does not fast in Ramadaan without being sick or having any other excuse that allows him not to fast is more evil than the adulterer or drunkard, indeed they doubted his Islam and thought that this was heresy.
A saheeh report which warns against not fasting was narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah (1986) and Ibn Hibbaan (7491) from Abu Umaamah al-Baahili who said:
I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say:
“Whilst I was sleeping two men came to me and took my by the arm and brought me to a cragged mountain. They said, ‘Climb up.’ I said, ‘I cannot.’ They said, ‘We will make it easy for you.’ So I climbed up until I was at the top of the mountain. Then I heard loud voices. I said, ‘What are these voices?’ They said, ‘This is the howling of the people of Hell.” Then I was taken until I saw people hanging by their hamstrings, with the sides of their mouths torn and blood pouring from their mouths.’ I said, ‘Who are these?’ He said, ‘These are people who broke their fast before it was time.’” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Mawaarid al-Zam’aan, no. 1509.
Al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This is the punishment of those who fasted then broke the fast deliberately before the time for breaking the fast came, so who about those who do not fast at all? We ask Allaah to keep us safe and sound in this world and in the Hereafter.
Our advice to the brother who asked this question is to fear Allaah and to beware of His wrath, vengeance and a painful punishment. He should hasten to repent to Allaah before the destroyer of pleasures that splits people apart [i.e., death] takes him unawares. Today there is action and no reckoning, but tomorrow there will be the reckoning and no action. Note that whoever repents, Allaah will accept his repentance, and whoever draws closer to Allaah one hand span, Allaah will draw closer to him one cubit. For Allaah is Most Generous, Forbearing and Most Merciful, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Know they not that Allaah accepts repentance from His slaves and takes the Sadaqaat (alms, charity), and that Allaah Alone is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful?”
[al-Tawbah 9:104]
If you try fasting and find out how easy it is and what comfort it brings and how close it brings you to Allaah, you will never give it up.
Think about what Allaah says at the end of the verses on fasting (interpretation of the meaning):
“Allaah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you”
[al-Baqarah 2:185]
The phrase, “so that you may be grateful to Him” shows that fasting is a blessing for which we must give thanks. Hence some of the salaf used to wish that the whole year was Ramadaan.
We ask Allaah to help you and guide you, and to open your heart to that which will bring you happiness in this world and in the Hereafter.

It is to be said with great sorrow and grief that the merciless crusaders once again resorted to killing tens of common people in Haji Abdur Rahman village, Ali Abad district, Kunduz province last night as a result of a ruthless bombardment. Those who were killed belonged to this area and the surrounding villages.
They were taking fuel from the tankers which had been left behind by the enemy who had fled after an armed clash in the area (with (Mujahideen).
Due to poverty and penury, the people had gathered to take fuel from the tankers without owner. They were busy taking fuel, when American jets made heavy bombardment and killed 150 villagers most of them children and adolescents.
This crime and atrocity, in the eye of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, is intolerable. We strongly condemn this atrocious event and consider the members of the Crusading Alliance and the surrogate officials of the Kabul regime the sole perpetrators of this callous and merciless act. We view them as despicable for this deed of theirs.
We are sharing the pains and grief of the families who have lost their members or received injuries in this horrendous event. We pray to Allah, the Almighty to accept the martyrdom of the martyrs and bestow patience and substitute on the bereaved families.
This horrific event in Kunduz province occurs in a time that the defense minister of the puppet administration in Kabul had accused Mujahideen yesterday of having killed hundreds of common people last month. He also tried to implicate Mujahideen in some pre-planned explosions and events which, in fact, is the handiwork of the intelligence agencies of the invaders.
Our esteemed countrymen may have taken notice of the claims of the governor of Kunduz as he said the event was the result of the tankers explosion brought about by the internal quarrelling of the people present there. But his endeavor to veil this event came to fail when the spokeswoman of NATO confirmed the news of bombardment.
In our view, the dreadful event in Kunduz is a clear-cut crime and intentional genocide. This can never be justified by saying this was a mistake.
We urge the human rights watch and human rights advocacy institutes, the United Nations and all independent entities and governments to strongly condemn this event and fulfill their humane and moral duty to prevent such events from being repeated in future.
We remind the perpetrators of this event, the Obama administration, and the leadership of NATO and the surrogates of Kabul that you will never be able to weaken the determination of a free people who have decided to continue their struggle for an Islamic system and independence of the country. Such crimes and bestiality only unveil their anti-human feature which they have kept concealed from the people of the world until now.

A furious Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has upbraided The Associated Press for its decision to go against the wishes of a young Marine’s family and publish a photograph of him after he was killed in Afghanistan.
In a scathing letter to Tom Curley, president and chief executive of The A.P., Mr. Gates said that the news agency’s decision was “appalling” and that the issue was one not of constitutionality but of “judgment and common decency.”
The A.P. defended the decision, which editors said they made only after careful review and sharing the pictures with the family. In an explanation of its deliberations, The A.P. said it decided “to make public an image that conveys the grimness of war and the sacrifice of young men and women fighting it.”
The publication of such dramatic images has been relatively rare, partly because journalists are not often on hand to see such events and because military guidelines, which The A.P. followed, bar the showing of pictures of dead soldiers before the family is notified.
The photograph in question was part of a package of articles and photographs about Lance Cpl. Joshua M. Bernard, 21, of New Portland, Me., and his unit, which was ambushed in Afghanistan on Aug. 14. Before sending the package to its newspaper clients, The A.P. sent a reporter to Maine to talk with the man’s family. They did so out of respect, Michael Oreskes, The A.P.’s senior managing editor, said in an interview, not to ask permission to publish the pictures. But the father, John Bernard, a former Marine, asked The A.P. not to publish the picture, saying it would only hurt the family more.
In an advisory to clients, The A.P. said its articles and photographs “offered vivid insights into how the battle was fought, and into Bernard’s character and background.” After the articles and pictures had been distributed but before they were published, Mr. Gates called Mr. Curley to urge him to change his mind.
“I am begging you to defer to the wishes of the family,” Mr. Gates said, according to his spokesman. Shortly after hanging up, Mr. Gates sent his letter.
“The American people understand that death is an awful and inescapable part of war,” Mr. Gates wrote. But publishing this photo, he said, goes against the wishes of the family and thus would mark an “unconscionable departure from the restraint that most journalists and publications have shown covering the military since Sept. 11.”
A few newspapers have published the picture, and many more have not. The New York Times published the photograph on its Web site
Despite protests from Pakistani intelligence agencies, citizens and political parties, an employee of Blackwater USA has been allowed to return to Pakistan.
Craig Davis was found guilty of engaging in secret discussions with pro-Taliban militant leadership without taking any branch of the government into confidence. He was later deported by the Intelligence Ministry in the first week of August, a Press TV correspondent quoting a local newspaper Business Recorder reported late on Friday.
"Davis is back in Pakistan on a visa issued by Pakistan Embassy in the US. He has returned to Pakistan and joined his team in Peshawar and is residing in the same house," the report added.
Pakistan's Interior Ministry has alerted the country's intelligence agencies, and requested them to keep a vigilant check on Davis' activities in Pakistan. This is while Pakistan's intelligence agencies have protested with the government on Davis' return to Pakistan.
After ordering the Kunduz massacre by German soldiers, this has to be known too.

The hyperventilating by Israel’s leaders over a story published in a Swedish newspaper last month suggesting that the Israeli army assisted in organ theft from Palestinians has distracted attention from the disturbing allegations made by Palestinian families that were the basis of the article’s central claim.
The families’ fears that relatives, killed by the Israeli army, had body parts removed during unauthorised autopsies performed in Israel have been overshadowed by accusations of a "blood libel" directed against the reporter, Donald Bostrom, the Aftonbladet newspaper, as well as the Swedish government and people.
I have no idea whether the story is true. Like most journalists working in Israel and Palestine, I have heard such rumours before. Until Bostrom wrote his piece, no Western journalist, as far as I know, had investigated them. After so many years, the assumption by journalists was that there was little hope of finding evidence — apart from literally by digging up the corpses. Doubtless, the inevitable charge of anti-semitism such reports attract acted as a powerful deterrent too.
What is striking about this episode is that the families making the claims were not given a hearing in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during the first intifada, when most of the reports occurred, and are still being denied the right to voice their concerns today.
Israel’s sensitivity to the allegation of organ theft — or "harvesting", as many observers coyly refer to the practice — appears to trump the genuine concerns of the families about possible abuse of their loved ones.
Bostrom has been much criticised for the flimsy evidence he produced in support of his inflammatory story. Certainly there is much to criticise in his and the newspaper’s presentation of the report.
Most significantly, Bostrom and Aftonbladet exposed themselves to the charge of anti-semitism — at least from Israeli officials keen to make mischief — through a major error of judgment.
They muddied the waters by trying to make a tenuous connection between the Palestinian families’ allegations about organ theft during unauthorised autopsies and the entirely separate revelations this month that a group of US Jews had been arrested for money-laundering and trading in body parts.
In making that connection, Bostrom and Aftonbladet suggested that the problem of organ theft is a current one when they have produced only examples of such concern from the early 1990s. They also implied, whether intentionally or not, that abuses allegedly committed by the Israeli army could somehow be extrapolated more generally to Jews.
The Swedish reporter should instead have concentrated on the valid question raised by the families about why the Israeli army, by its own admission, took away the bodies of dozens of Palestinians killed by its soldiers, allowed autopsies to be performed on them without the families’ permission and then returned the bodies for burial in ceremonies held under tight security.
Bostrom’s article highlighted the case of one Palestinian, 19-year-old Bilal Ahmed Ghanan, from the village of Imatin in the northern West Bank, who was killed in 1992. A shocking picture of Bilal’s stitched-up body accompanied the report.
Bostrom has told the Israeli media that he knows of at least 20 cases of families claiming that the bodies of loved ones were returned with body parts missing, although he did not say whether any of these alleged incidents occurred more recently.
In 1992, the year in question, Bostrom says, the Israeli army admitted to him that it took away for autopsy 69 of the 133 Palestinians who died of unnatural causes. The army has not denied this part of his report.
A justifiable question from the families relayed by Bostrom is: why did the army want the autopsies carried out? Unless it can be shown that the army intended to conduct investigations into the deaths — and there is apparently no suggestion that it did — the autopsies were unnecessary.
In fact, they were more than unnecessary. They were counterproductive if we assume that the army has no interest in gathering evidence that could be used in future war crimes prosecutions of its soldiers. Israel has a long track record of stymying investigations into Palestinian deaths at the hands of its soldiers, and carried on that ignoble tradition in the wake of its recent assault on Gaza.
Of even greater concern for the Palestinian families is the fact that at around the time the bodies of their loved ones were whisked off by the army for autopsy, the only institute in Israel that conducts such autopsies, Abu Kabir, near Tel Aviv, was almost certainly at the centre of a trade in organs that later became a scandal inside Israel.
Equally disturbing, the doctor behind the plunder of body parts, Prof Yehuda Hiss, appointed director of the Abu Kabir institute in the late 1980s, has never been jailed despite admitting to the organ theft and he continues to be the state’s chief pathologist at the institute.
Hiss was in charge of the autopsies of Palestinians when Bostrom was listening to the families’ claims in 1992. Hiss was subsequently investigated twice, in 2002 and 2005, over the theft of body parts on a large scale.
Allegations of Hiss’ illegal trade in organs was first revealed in 2000 by investigative reporters at the Yediot Aharonot newspaper, which reported that he had "price listings" for body parts and that he sold mainly to Israeli universities and medical schools.
Apparently undeterred by these revelations, Hiss still had an array of body parts in his possession at Abu Kabir when the Israeli courts ordered a search in 2002. Israel National News reported at the time: "Over the past years, heads of the institute appear to have given thousands of organs for research without permission, while maintaining a 'storehouse’ of organs at Abu Kabir."
Hiss did not deny the plunder of organs, admitting that the body parts belonged to soldiers killed in action and had been passed to medical institutes and hospitals in the interests of advancing research. Understandably, however, the Palestinian families are unlikely to be satisfied with Hiss’ explanation. If the wishes of a soldier’s familiy were disregarded by Hiss, why not Palestinian families’ wishes too?
Hiss was allowed to continue as director of Abu Kabir until 2005 when allegations of a trade in organs surfaced again. On this occasion Hiss admitted to having removed parts from 125 bodies without authorisation. Following a plea bargain with the state, the attorney general decided not to press criminal charges and Hiss was given only a reprimand. He has continued as chief pathologist at Abu Kabir.
It should also be noted, as Bostrom points out, that in the early 1990s Israel was suffering from an acute shortage of organ donors to the extent that Ehud Olmert, health minister at the time, launched a public campaign to encourage Israelis to come forward.
This offers a possible explanation for Hiss’ actions. He may have acted to help make up the shortfall.
Given the facts that are known, there must be at least a very strong suspicion that Hiss removed organs without authorisation from some Palestinians he autopsied. Both this issue, and the army’s possible role in supplying him with corpses, needs investigation.
Hiss is also implicated in another long-running and unresolved scandal from Israel’s early years, in the 1950s, when the children of recent Jewish immigrants to Israel from Yemen were adopted by Ashkenazi couples after the Yeminite parents had been told that their child had died, [9] usually after admission to hospital.
After an initial cover-up, the Yeminite parents have continued pressing for answers from the state, and forced officials to reopen the files. The Palestinian families deserve no less.
However, unlike the Yemenite parents, their chances of receiving any kind of investigation, transparent or otherwise, look all but hopeless.
When Palestinian demands for justice are not backed by investigations from journalists or the protests of the international community, Israel can safely ignore them.
It is worth remembering in this context the constant refrain from Israel’s peace camp that the brutal, four-decade occupation of the Palestinians has profoundly corrupted Israeli society.
When the army enjoys power without accountability, how do Palestinians, or we, know what soldiers are allowed to get away with under cover of occupation? What restraints are in place to prevent abuses? And who takes them to task if they do commit crimes?
Similarly, when Israeli politicians are able to cry "blood libel" or "anti-semitism" when they are criticised, damaging the reputations of those they accuse, what incentive do they have to initiate inquiries that may harm them or the institutions they oversee? What reason do they have to be honest when they can bludgeon a critic into silence, at no cost to themselves?
This is the meaning of the phrase "Power corrupts", and Israeli politicians and soldiers, as well as at least one pathologist, demonstrably have far too much power — most especially over Palestinians under occupation.

The stench of burnt flesh hung over the banks of the Kunduz river in the early hours of Friday, the ground scattered with the body parts of villagers who just wanted something for free.
Helping yourself to the spoils of hijacked military convoys is nothing new in Afghanistan and the payload of two fuel tankers destined for Nato-led forces seemed as good as any.
But the overnight bonanza soon turned to horror when Nato jets launched an airstrike before 3am (22.30GMT), strafing the tankers and igniting an inferno that officials said killed between 50 and 90 people.
"Nobody was in one piece. Hands, legs and body parts were scattered everywhere. Those who were away from the fuel tanker were badly burnt," said 32-year-old Mohammad Daud, depicting a scene from hell.
The burned-out shells of the tankers, still smoking in marooned wrecks on the riverbank, were surrounded by the charred-meat remains of villagers from Chahar Dara district in Kunduz province, near the Tajik border.
Dr Farid Rahid, a spokesperson in Kabul for the ministry of health, said up to 250 villagers had been near the tankers when the airstrike was called in.
Officials said about 55 Taliban were killed and more than 10 wounded, but witness accounts of civilian deaths are yet to be officially confirmed.
Witnesses told Agence France-Presse that villagers, including children, gathered around one of the tankers that had stalled in the shallows of the river to help themselves to fuel.
Taliban insurgents hijacked the trucks late Thursday, the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) under Nato said, and were trying to drive them across the river when one got bogged down.
Witnesses said the insurgents called on villagers living nearby to help themselves to the fuel -- probably to lighten the load and make the stranded truck easier to move.
"Villagers rushed to the fuel tanker with any available container that they had, including water buckets and pots for cooking oil," said Daud.
Some farmers even brought their tractors to fill up, he said, and as they did, 10 to 15 Taliban gunmen stood on top of the tanker watching the free-for-all.
"This was when they were bombed," Daud said. "Everyone around the fuel tanker died."
Shoes, an AK-47 rifle, swatches of burned clothing, the carcass of a donkey with a woven saddle cloth still tied across its flanks, yellow plastic jerry cans with red screwtops -- all lay scattered across the pebbled banks.
Turbaned men, one holding a GI doll in a blue uniform, and Afghan security forces in desert boots and green berets strode around the tankers as dawn segued into a blue-sky day.
At a funeral ceremony, village men and boys stood silent along the edge of a mass grave as a tractor opposite shoved earth over the shrouded bodies below.
And at a hospital in Kunduz city, the provincial capital, the wounded were brought in on carpet-covered stretchers, their skin burned away from red-raw wounds, many too dazed and in too much pain to even cry, witnesses said.
Around eight bodies were in a terrible condition -- the skin burnt black and peeling off to expose raw red muscle. Others arrived with their clothes burnt on to their skin.
The hospital was filled with the smell of burnt flesh, with even the corridors occupied by the wounded, said an Agence France-Presse reporter. -- AFP

Usually they have a section for Personal Philosophy; Religious Beliefs; or Medical Reasons. If your state or province just has the Religious and Medical exemption sections…if your religion includes the belief that you should be able to exercise your moral agency to make choices (including whether dangerous substances are injected into your child’s body, or not); then fill out the Religious Exemption section.
If your state or province only has the Medical Exemption section; then find a doctor that will write something to the effect: There is a family history of autoimmune disorders, with respect to this child. Vaccines could be harmful to this child. (Allergies are a form of autoimmune disorder — and somewhere in your family tree you will at least have someone who has had allergies.)
The Truth Shall Make You Free.
Why don’t we use the truth to turn the tables. Lets go from 95% of the public believing in and taking the shots — to 95% knowing the truth and refusing the shots. Let’s put the multibillion dollar, exploitive, worldwide vaccine industry out of business. Support for Lisbon Treaty drops in Ireland HONOR MAHONY
With just a month to go until Ireland's second referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, a poll has shown that 46 percent support a yes vote, down eight points since May.
Published by the Irish Times, the TNS mrbi poll shows a rise of one point in those saying they plan to vote No to 29 percent with the Don't Knows registering at 25 percent, up seven points in comparison to a pre-summer survey.
The drop in support for the treaty is reminiscent of the trend ahead of the first referendum
The newspaper notes that most of the people who have left the Yes side have entered the Don't Know category rather than crossed to the No camp.

"I don't believe this is about the future of this government or the future of personalities, it's about the future of the country. This is not politics as usual. PKKH has learnt from informed sources within the Pakistan Navy that certain high-ranking individuals within the Naval forces are involved in secret construction of operational facilities in Gharo, Sindh, which are intended to serve as a base for around 200 US marines.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that a high ranking official of the Special Service Group Navy (SSGN), which is the commando division of the Pakistan Navy, is involved in the construction of a large complex in GHARO, Sindh, which is described to be purpose built to serve as a base for an army unit – comprising of halls, residential units, and storage facilities. The source has also stressed that the Pakistan Navy had already rejected a similar proposal by the US Armed Forces earlier this year. However, the SSGN official involved had kept the authorities in the dark about the purpose-built facility in Gharo.
Some years back the Navy had decided to shift the SSGN headquarter (PNS Iqbal) from the dockyard to a coastal area, but Gharo was not the likely sight at the time. Because there has been a sudden increase in assistance to the SSGN from the US, questions are being raised whether this shifting of the SSGN to Gharo is actually a ruse to allow US Marine “trainers” to arrive there in large numbers on the pretext of training the SSGN commandos in newly-acquired weapons and tactics?

Paris - One French soldier was killed and nine were injured, several of them gravely, in the explosion of a bomb in Afghanistan, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Friday in a press statement. The victims were part of a French motorized patrol on a mission in the region of Showki, between the military bases of Nijrab and Bagram in the east of the country.
Sarkozy condemned what he called "blind violence" and expressed "the determination of France to continue to work for the re- establishment of peace and development in Afghanistan.
About 3,000 French soldiers are currently stationed on Afghan territory.
