General Juvenal Niyonguruza terminated in Somalia.
BUJUMBURA (AFP) – Burundi's opposition parties Saturday urged the recall of troops from Somalia after a rebel attack on African peacekeepers killed 12 soldiers from the central African nation as well as nine others.
"If the mandate of our soldiers does not change and if the international community does not give them the means to defend themselves, the government should repatriate all soldiers," said Leonce Ngendakumana, head of the main opposition Frodebu party.
"There is no peace there to safeguard or maintain." The Union for Peace and Development wants "an immediate and unconditional return of Burundian soldiers deployed in Somalia," party spokesman Chauvineau Mugwengezo added.
"These soldiers were illegally sent to Somalia and parliament was not consulted," he said. "The government must bring them back at once." Leonard Nyangoma, the vocal head of another party said: "In the current state of affairs, keeping our soldiers in Burundi is like asking them to commit mass suicide."
On Friday, the Burundian government declared a five-day national mourning, a day after twin suicide attacks on the African Union "peacekeeping" forces' headquarters in Mogadishu claimed 21 lives in the "deadliest" known strike against the force since its deployment in March 2007.
The bodies of the soldiers arrived Saturday at a military base north of the capital Bujumbura. The dead included the number two of the peacekeeping force Amisom, general Juvenal Niyonguruza from Burundi.
The soldiers will be buried on Sunday.
Burundi and Uganda are the sole contributors to the 5,000-strong Amisom terrorist force, which is far smaller than the 8,000 soldiers envisaged.
Gazans miss joy of Eid under shadow of blockade, war

Mohamed al-Hweiti, a clothing store owner in downtown Gaza, looked so exhausted as he was busy serving dozens of customers, who came to buy new garments for their children to wear during the Eid ul-Fitter holiday, the Muslim's feast at the end of Ramadan.
Al-Hweiti, whose store was full of clothes, most of which were made in Egypt and smuggled to Gaza, said most of the goods, products and Eid accessories can be easily found in the Gaza Strip markets, "but they are very expensive because they are smuggled through tunnels and are not legally imported."
"The current economical situation, thanks to the Israeli blockade and the 22-day December-January Israeli war on Gaza which destroyed everything, had made life so difficult here not only for vendors but also for consumers," he added.
Israel imposed a tight blockade on the Gaza Strip and sealed off all the commercial crossings on its borders with the impoverished enclave, right after Islamic Hamas militants seized control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007.
Then the Gazans defied the Israeli siege and dug thousands of tunnels under the borders with Egypt.
"Before the siege, we used to legally import the clothes through the commercial crossings, and the prices were reasonable and the quality was very good, but now the cost of the smuggled goods which we are now selling in our stores is so high, therefore, the prices for our customers are higher," said al-Hweiti.
Since the beginning of the tight Israeli blockade, Israel only allowed through the commercial crossings 23 kinds of food products and prohibited raw-materials for industry and construction, as well as clothes and shoes.
In spite of more than two years of siege in the Hamas-ruled area, Gaza city markets and streets were overcrowded with traffics and customers. People said although the economic situation is poor, they are still trying their best to bring joy for their children by buying them new clothes.
"What we really miss during this Eid holiday is joy. We have been living under very difficult circumstances over the past two years. I can hardly afford to buy expensive clothes for my two daughters and one son to make them happy," said Ahmed Abu Aasi, a 45-year-old teacher in Gaza.
As he walked with his three children to Gaza downtown market to buy clothes and shoes for them to wear during the Eid holiday, he said "if current situation in Gaza continues, I'm not certain that I will be able to buy them new clothes for the next Eid."
Mohsen Bolbol, another Gaza store owner, admitted that the garments he purchased from smugglers in his store "are too expensive, either for children or for adults," adding "the vendors are not responsible for the crazy high prices of goods, the reason is that the cost of the goods is very expensive."
Different kinds of goods and products, prohibited by Israel into Gaza through the commercial crossings, have been smuggled through the underground tunnels under the borders between Gaza Strip and Egypt. Many vendors said smuggling is illegal, but without those tunnels, people would have died."
Many Gazans are looking forward the improvement of political situation, which will bring economy flourish in the poor enclave, though the chance is slim in the near future.
"I could just afford the clothes for my children, but I am not able to buy candies and cookies for my relatives who usually visit me during the Eid holiday," said Mohamed Jabber, a 54-year-old unemployed Gaza resident.
"I depend my living on the monthly financial aid from different charities," he said.
Some International humanitarian organizations are trying to help the poor Gazans. International official figures indicate poverty population in Gaza has climbed to 70 percent.
"We are not beggars, all the aid we receive every month are temporary. I miss the days when I worked and earned regular monthly income. The aid cannot help us bring the smile back to the faces of our children," said Jabber.
Besides the siege, the impact of the destructive major Israeli war on Gaza has compelled people to spend a sad Eid holiday, since many lost their beloved relatives and friends during the war which ended on Jan. 18.
According to the official figures, about 1,450 Palestinians, most of whom were women and children, were killed during the Israeli offensive.
Majed al-Samouni, whose family lost 27 members during the war, said this is the first Eid ul-Fitter holiday without them being with us.
"This Eid can only bring painful and sad memories to me and to the rest of my family," he said.

The U.S. military says a Blackhawk helicopter has crashed in an American base in Iraq, killing 1 service member and wounding 12 others.
The military says the helicopter went down Saturday night at the Balad Air Base, 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Baghdad. It says the cause of the crash is unknown and under investigation.
The name of the service member killed is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
With Saturday's death, at least 4,345 members of the U.S. military have died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
Balad Air Base is home to about 20,000 U.S. forces. It provides air power, logistics and counterterrorism support, as well as training for Iraqi security forces.

Today they are thinking of taxing soda because it causes obesity which in turn increases our health insurance costs. Do you think Aspartame keeps us from gaining weight? NO, it contains a chemical that make us crave carbohydrates and as a result makes us eat more.
Aspartame is big business; just look at all the marketing campaigns with the skinny good looking models. We as consumers are ignorant to the fact that Aspartame is contributing to our health care cost and paying for it with our family’s health while Rumsfeld and his companies Searle and NutraSweet get richer and richer.
Instead of taxing non-diet sodas we should tax diet soda and any product that uses Aspartame (thus prompting the consumer to drink and/or eat less) along with the companies that make them. Spread the word.
PS. If we are worried about obesity with sugar enriched sodas especially with our children...take the soda out of the vending machines and lunch program at the schools. It’s not the consumption of sugary beverages…it’s the over consumption that makes us obese and that has to do with anything that makes us fat….white flour, dairy products, sweets, carbohydrates and soda.

War crimes: Yemeni government using white phosphor made in the US..
A Yemeni government air strike has killed scores of displaced civilians, mostly women and children, in the war-torn Amran province, witnesses say.
Up to 120 people, including 80 dead were transferred to the local hospital, an ambulance driver who had counted the dead and the injured said on condition of anonymity, fearing government payback.
Three other witnesses reported a similar number of casualties in the area, which is close to the Houthi-controlled city of Harf Sufyan.
Local aid workers and tribal sources said the air strike came around midday. They reported seeing body parts flying in the air and pools of blood where hundreds of the displaced had taken refuge.
Mohammed, a local aid worker working with the displaced, said when the missiles hit the area, people ran for cover under a nearby bridge, which was then targeted by the government warplanes.
"The area turned into a pool of blood. I saw body parts and charred bodies," said Ali, another local aid worker.
A third witness, Yehia, also said that ambulances reached the bombarded area hours after the bombing.
Military officials denied the reported casualties among civilians, claiming that there was no gathering of displaced people in al-Adi. A civil servant in the local government, however, confirmed the attack.
A statement from the Houthi fighters -- also known as the Zaidis -- confirmed that a government air strike had targeted a group of displaced, leaving dozens dead.
The attack was the second government air strike against civilians in three days in the conflict-ridden area of northern Yemen. A new round of fighting broke out in Sa'dah and Amran provinces last month.
The air raid followed a Monday statement by the fighters that Yemeni jets had dropped two bombs on a crowded market in Sa'dah city, killing more than a dozen civilians.
Houthi fighters say the government denies Zaidi Shias, who make up almost half of the Yemeni population, their rights and marginalizes them as Sana'a is allied with Saudi-backed Sunni extremists, who consider Shias heretics.
According to the Red Cross, the new round of fighting in northern Yemen which broke out on August 1 has left some 30,000 civilians displaced, brining the total count to over 150,000 since 2004.
Most of the displaced civilians have taken refuge in major cities, but some are stranded in remote areas.
On Wednesday, the United Nations announced that an appeal for donations to help the 150,000 Yemeni refugees had received no responses so far.

Moroccan trying to change law eating during Ramadan gets 100 death threats by Muslims.
A Moroccan man campaigning to change the law banning eating in public during the Muslim Ramadan fast says he has received 100 death threats this week.
Radi Omar denied that his group was anti-Islam. "We are in favour of individual freedom," he told the BBC.
Six of his colleagues are in custody after planning to eat in public last Sunday and he demanded their release.
Mr Omar said they were being well treated but he assumed they were not being fed during the fasting hours.
The group, known as the Alternative Movement for Individual Freedoms (Mali) funded by the Israeli Policy Department, has more than 1,200 members on its Facebook site.
They planned a public defiance of the law at the train station in Mohammedia near Casablanca last Sunday but were dispersed by the police.
The protesters were prevented from eating and so should not have been detained, Mr Omar said, adding that they have not been charged.
Under Moroccan law, eating in public during the hours of daylight, when Muslims are supposed to observe a fast, can lead to a fine and up to six months in prison. More..

Having said that, I would like to state: The Almighty Allah says: “Say: Truly my prayer and my service of sacrifice,
My life and my death are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds.” 6:162.
I extend my heart-felt felicitation to all heroic Mujahideen, the pious people, the families of martyrs of the sacred frontlines of Islam and to all Islamic Ummah on the occasion of the Eid-ul-fitre and congratulate them for their having performed the sacred obligation of fasting. I pray to Allah, to accept in His sight all the worships and sacrifices that they offered. May Allah pass these days of love, brotherhood and joy in an atmosphere of happiness, prosperity and victory over the invading enemy. I congratulate you all for the historical victories achieved in the honorable frontlines of Jihad this current year. May Allah accept the martyrdom of the martyrs and the struggles of the Mujahideen in this blessed and holy path?
Availing of this opportunity, I deem it necessary to put forward the following points before you all:
a) I assure our brave people and the gallant Mujahideen that the plans of global colonialism for occupation of Afghanistan has faced failure because of your self-less sacrifices. During the past eight years, NATO under the leadership of the militarists of Pentagon, implemented a policy of brutality and atrocity, hoping that they will subjugate the brave people of Afghanistan by dent of military power. They used their sophisticated and cutting-edge technology including chemical weapons in order to achieve that end; employed hundreds of centers of propaganda and spent billions of dollars to portray image of their military power in a palatable way and terrorize their counterpart opposition. But all these anti-human activities could not give them success. With the passage of time, the resistance and the Jihadic movement, as a robust Islamic and nationalist movement, assumed the shape of a popular movement and is approaching the edge of victory.
The invaders should study the history of Afghanistan from the time of the aggression of the Alexander, to the Ganges of the yore and to this very day and should receive lesson from it. Still, if they are bent on ignoring the history, then they themselves saw with their own eyes, the events of the past eight years. Have they achieved any thing in the past eight years? Even if they are not ready to review the loss and benefits of these years, at least, they should ponder over the consequences of the extensive operations launched under the name of Khanjar “sword” and the panther’s claw. What did they achieve? Is this disgrace and historical defeat not enough for them (to take lesson)?
Though the double-faced media has kept their public ignorant of the facts but their government are well aware of the ground realities—the huge casualties and the sagging morale of their soldiers. The more the enemy resorts to increasing forces, the more they will face an unequivocal defeat in Afghanistan
It is clear from the statements of the military sources of NATO and America and the information disclosed by captured soldiers that material and life losses of the invaders are several times higher than what they acknowledge. Any way, the policy which they have adopted will only prolong the current crisis but will never solve it. This is because the existence of foreign troops in Afghanistan and the invasion is in itself an issue, not a solution—even a big issue in its own right.
The rampant corruption in the surrogate Kabul administration, the embezzlement, drug trafficking, the existence of mafia networks, the tyranny and high-handed ness of the warlords, and spread and increase of the centers of obscenity being materialized as per the previously contemplated plans, are part of the colonial ambitious and conspiratorial accords. This has driven the people to face poverty, starvation and unemployment to the extent that they were forced to sell their children.
Despite the crimes of the invaders, another brazen atrocity is that, that they imposed a corrupt and stooge administration on the people once again by the pretext of the so-called elections which were fraught with fraud and lies and which were categorically rejected by the people. It is very natural that the gallant and free people are not ready to accept the results of these illegitimate elections. Therefore, first of all the issue of the existence of the invading forces in the country should be solved and Afghanistan must find its place as a sovereign country on the map of the world. The internal issues among the Afghans can be solved but in circumstances of occupation, ( our ) national and Islamic interests come under the shadow of the interests of the foreigners and our national and Islamic interests readily fall prey to the interests and conspiracies of global colonialism.
Our goal is to gain independence of the country and establish a just Islamic system there on the basis of the aspirations of the Muslim nation. We can consider any option that could lead to the achievement of this goal. We have left open all options and ways towards this end. However, this will only be feasible when the country is free from the trampling steps of the invading forces and has gained independence.
b) The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants that the true sons of this land should have participation in the government and in the government-making, following the withdrawal of foreign forces from Afghanistan-- because the rehabilitation work, economic, political , educational and cultural affairs of the country can never go along way without participation of knowledgeable , professional and experienced sincere Afghans. Fortunately, a great number of our independent, professional, experienced Muslims cadres, whether they are inside the country or outside, have not submitted to the current occupation, nor they accept the administration brought about as a result of the occupation. They support an independent, free and Islamic government in the country.
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has distinctive and useful plans for the future of Afghanistan under the shade of the just social system of Islam after the withdrawal of the foreign forces. They include rehabilitation of social and economic infrastructure, advancement and development of the educational sector, industrializations of the country and development of agriculture.
c)The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan calls on all those who work in the surrogate Kabul administration and shore up the global colonialism by their being there to stop opposing your religion, country and people. The foreign colonialists take strength from your Afghan arm and continue their occupation of our country. These brutal invaders have trampled down on all our Islamic values; they work for dissemination and spread of Christianity under a previously worked-out plan; they plunder our natural resources under one and another name and put heavy burdens of loans on our country. The Islamic Emirate has left door of safety open for whomever depart with the ways of betrayal and treason with the country and people.
All should bear in mind that the current popular Islamic revolution against the invaders is forging ahead like a powerful flood. Any one who opts to resist it will himself be washed away. Atrocity, torture, brutality, conspiracies, coalitions, the foreign forces and mercenaries could not hurl stumbling blocks in the way of this robust Jihadic movement. It is better to side with your people to fulfill the obligation required by the belief and gain historical honor, particularly the former Mujahideen who now work in the stooge administration should make for their infamy by joining the ranks of Jihad and abandon the ranks of the non-believers.
D ) The Islamic Emirate (IE) believes in social and internal reform as well as in positive initiatives in the context of Sharia. IE is aware of the in discrepancies. Therefore, it obliges all Mujahideen to strictly observe the rules and regulations so that all Mujahideen will continue to wage Jihad as sincere sons of the country for the prosperity of the masses under the framework of Islamic Sharia. Thus, they will become both true protectors of the frontlines of independence and representatives of the fundamental wants of the people.
The Islamic Emirate considers the purge of its ranks and self-accountability an everlasting and necessary obligation.
The enemy has faced defeat in the field of the battle and it is not far way that it will swallow the bitter poison of a complete defeat. But as a last tactic, it is trying to spread seed of disunity and division among the nation to turn its defeat into victory. Praise be to Allah, the High, that the enemy is facing a fiasco in its hypocritical efforts. The Islam-loving and country-loving people consider it a religious obligation to keep the unity and assist the Mujahideen. They see independence of the dear country as their legitimate right and believe the western media serves only as a loudspeaker of Pentagon. They will never be misled by their fatuous propaganda. The sympathy, affinity and enchantment of the people play a great role in the unprecedented advancement of the Mujahideen. Praise be to Allah, the enchantment of people and their affinity grows day by day. Therefore, the Mujahideen should not think themselves to be a separate entity from the people. They should protect their property, life and honor and stop those who, under the name of Mujahideen, want to encroach on the property, life and honor of the people--readily by the provocation of the enemy. Similarly, Mujahideen should focus on the Islamic education of the masses, so that they would voluntarily participate in Jihad in person and by wealth. The people should remain aware to avoid being tricked by the empty bluffs of some military commanders or the statement of a British military commander saying that we would remain in Afghanistan for forty years.
We would like to point out that we fought against the British invaders for eighty years from 1839 to 1919 and ultimately got independence by defeating the Britain. Today we have strong determination, military training and effective weapons. Still more, we have preparedness for a long war and the regional situation is in our favor. Therefore, we will continue to wage Jihad until we gain independence and force the invaders to pull out.
When we notified all regarding the unprecedented momentum and impetus in the resistance in our previous statement, they were not just propaganda-oriented empty words. All witnessed the momentum in action. We warn once again that our ensuing aggressive operations will be characterized by effective tactics which will enter a phase where the enemy will have unparalleled casualties and constant defeats, if God willing.
e)The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants to maintain good and positive relations with all neighbors based on mutual respect and open a new chapter of good neighborliness of mutual cooperation and economic development.
We consider the whole region as a common home against colonialism and want to play our role in peace and stability of the region. We assure all countries that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, as a responsible force, will not extend its hand to cause jeopardy to others as it itself does not allow others to jeopardize us.
We would like to say, we are victims of the black propaganda of the enemy media. This has created doubts between us and a number of countries of the world. They have wrongly depicted us as a force being against education and women’s rights. They also accuse us of our being a threat to the countries of the world. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan wants to clear away all these doubts provided a conducive atmosphere is available. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan calls on the public of the West not to be deceived by the assertions of Obama, who says the war in Afghanistan, is a war of necessity. The West does not have to wage this war. This war, in fact, started for clandestine motives under baseless reasons. The humanity, as a whole, suffers from its negative consequences. The global economic meltdown, instability, lack of trust and violation of international norms is the outcome of the baseless policies (of this war).
The public of the West should also not be deceived by the assertions of the General Secretary of NATO and British Prime Minister who claim the war in Afghanistan is for the defense of the West. Such deceiving and baseless utterances must not confuse you. These are just demagogic efforts of your rulers aimed at justifying this unlawful and long imposed war in contravention of all international principles.
No country in the world has right to meddle in the internal affairs of its neighboring country according to the modern international principles. The arrogant powers-that-be at the White House and its British Ally should know their interference from thousands of kilometers away is never acceptable to the countries of the region and can never be tolerated. The plans of colonial expansionism which is under way in the region under the notorious and unlawful slogan of war on terrorism is, in fact, an endeavor against the universal human values, justice, peace, equal distribution of resources and independence-- an endeavor tainting the true representatives of the aspirations of the people under one or another name. All countries, particularly the Islamic countries, our neighbors, the powerful countries, the movement of the non-aligned countries should feel and fulfill their historical role.
I urge the Islamic Ummah, particularly the Islamic and Jihadic organizations to remain aware of the conspiracies of the enemy; abandon the internal differences and begin a concerted and comprehensive struggle for the defense and freedom of the oppressed and occupied Ummah.
To end, I urge all God-fearing Muslims, as they themselves share the joy and happiness of this occasion with their families, should not forget the widows of the martyrs, orphans and mothers who have lost their sons. They are the martyrs who laid down their lives against the bloc of the infidels for the establishment of Islamic system. Similarly, do not forget the bereaved families of those Afghan victims including old men, young, women, children who have been martyred as a result of the blind bombardment of the invaders and are no more among you.
Finally, I extend my felicitation to you on the occasion of Eid-ul-fitre and wishing you independence.

Former CIA Chiefs urge Obama to halt abuse Investigation

Seven former CIA directors have urged U.S. President Barack Obama to stop a criminal probe into alleged prisoner abuse by CIA interrogators during the Bush administration.
The CIA directors, who served both Democratic and Republican presidents, made they request in a letter Friday to the White House.
In their letter, the former terrorist directors - John Deutch, Porter Goss, Michael Hayden, James Schlesinger, George Tenet, William Webster, and James Woolsey - warned that the investigation could discourage intelligence officers to take risks to protect the country, and may inhibit foreign governments from cooperating with the United States.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder last month named prosecutor John Durham to lead the investigation to determine whether CIA personnel broke laws when interrogating terrorism suspects.
Holder's spokesman Mark Miller said the attorney general's decision to order a preliminary review into this matter was made in line with his duty to examine the facts and to follow the law.
Miller said the Justice Department will not prosecute anyone who acted in good faith and within the scope of the legal guidance given by the Office of Legal Counsel regarding the interrogation of detainees.
Dick Cheney, who was vice president in the Bush administration, denounced the opening of the investigation as "politically motivated." He said the decision would damage the country's long-term capacity to have people take on difficult jobs.
Cheney is a staunch defender of the former administration's interrogation policies put in place after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States. He said these techniques kept the nation safe from further terrorism attacks.
CAIRO – The holy month of Ramadan has brought out Egypt's cultural split personality, twisting Egyptians into knots over whether their society is secular, Muslim or a muddled mix.
Two furious debates have been raging through the season in the Arab world's most populous nation. On one hand, rumors that police arrested Egyptians violating the daily Ramadan fast raised dire warnings from secularists that a Taliban-like rule by Islamic law is taking over.
On the other, Ramadan TV talk shows on state-sponsored television featuring racily dressed female hosts discussing intimate sex secrets with celebrities have sparked outrage from conservatives, denouncing what they call the decadence that is sweeping the nation.
So is Egypt being taken over by sinners or saints? Egyptians have always been a boisterous combination — priding themselves on their piety, while determined to have a good time.
Ramadan, the final day of which is Saturday in most of the Islamic world, shows the contradictions. Egyptians widely adhere to the dawn-to-dusk fast, in which the faithful abstain from food, drink, smoking and sex from dawn until dusk. After sunset, while some pray into the night, many Egyptians party with large meals and a heavy dose of TV entertainment produced specially for the month.
But the confusion comes from the government as well. It has often promoted strict Islamic principles in an attempt to co-opt conservatives and undercut extremists whom the state has been battling for decades. But it also increasingly dominated by businessmen who this year are more heavily than ever promoting Western-style secular culture.
There is no explicit law in Egypt to punish those not abiding by the fast, nor are there religious police to enforce Islamic rules as in Saudi Arabia. Many restaurants still serve during the day, and coffee shops can be seen with their doors cracked open, patrons hidden inside sipping tea or smoking water pipes.
But independent newspapers reported this month that police arrested more than 150 people for openly violating the fast.
Most of the reports have been unconfirmed. But Ahmed, a 27-year old fruit vendor, told The Associated Press he and 15 other people were arrested in a market in the southern town of Aswan on Sept. 5, for smoking in public.
"I was slapped, kicked around," Ahmed said, refusing to give his last name fearing further police harassment. "They asked me why I am not fasting ... They insulted me and used foul language."
Ahmed said he was kept in the police station for nearly six hours, then let go. "Now I am fasting, I swear," he said.
Police officials refused to confirm if Ahmed and others were arrested for not fasting, saying only they were rounded up for investigation.
The reports sparked criticism from Egyptian human rights activists, who called the crackdown unconstitutional. Activists said it appeared some police were acting individually to enforce the fast, a sign of increasing conservatism in the Interior Ministry. Some critics argued that adherence to the fast is traditionally a matter between each individual Muslim and God.
The Interior Ministry didn't deny or confirm the reports, but a ministry spokesman was quoted in the press last week insisting the security forces have a right to crack down on violators of the fast.
Bilal Fadl, a popular satirical columnist, said the ministry is mimicking "big sister Saudi Arabia," adding, "can we be so demanding from the sheiks in the Interior Ministry and ask them to postpone their campaign to defend (Islam) ... and start with implementing religious laws that fight corruption?"
An Egyptian blogger who goes by the pseudonym "Dog" warned, "once we start going down the slippery slope of religious fascism, Egypt will become another Afghanistan in no time."
But the campaign appeared to have backers among the public. One woman who called into a popular talk show, Al-Qahira Al-Yom (Cairo Today), said fast-breakers were "looking for trouble" and should be jailed.
Television talk shows and soap operas produced especially for Ramadan have sparked their own debates.
State television and private channels owned by businessmen close to the government flooded the airwaves with new programs that liberally discussed taboo subjects like extramarital relationships, polygamy, divorce and sex education. Most featured stylish female hosts and often veered into titillation.
Ramadan is supposed to be a time of piety and religious reflection. Open talk of sex on TV is frowned upon throughout the year — but it's outright shocking during the holy month, when Muslims believe Islam's holy book the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
Gehad Auda, a political analyst and member of the ruling party, said the government was intentionally trying to challenge religious extremists by opening the doors to more daring topics on TV.
"There is a new television logic, not only with images, but also through dialogue, without fear by breaking taboos surrounding many issues" to raise social awareness, Auda said.
In one espoused of a talk show called "The Daring One," the host — a famous female film director with a penchant for short skirts — kept pressing her actress guest about what she and her boyfriend liked to do when they're alone.
On the same show, another actress confessed she once had an abortion — which is illegal in Egypt and strictly forbidden by Islamic law. A male guest admitted to extramarital affairs.
The barrage of provocative shows has unleashed heavy criticism. "We should boycott all this absurdity and obscenity and read the Quran," Mahmoud Ashour, an official with al-Azhar, the highest institution of Sunni learning in the Muslim world, told a gathering.
Columnist Ahmed Gamal Badawi wrote in the liberal opposition daily Al-Wafd that the government policy to "besiege" Islamists with "obscenity" would backfire and only add "millions to their ranks."
Wael Abdel Fattah, a producer of one of the new talk shows but also a government critic, said the conflicting messages of arresting fast-breakers while challenging religious sensitivities just show the state's determination to impose its power on all sides. The state "is now dressing up in fashion, wearing a suit and tie, talking elegantly, showing pretty pictures but it is still very much in control ... it all fits the traditional tools of oppression," he said.

Militants have reportedly set on fire a supply truck en route to US and NATO bases in Afghanistan in an overnight attack at Pakistan's south-western Baluchistan province.
The attack took place late Thursday when unidentified armed men held a container lorry on the National Highway in the remote town of Khuzdar near the Afghan border at gunpoint. The gunmen then set fire to the vehicle which was completely gutted in the incident, local police officials told a Press TV correspondent.
The bulk of supplies and equipment required by NATO and US-led forces battling insurgency in Afghanistan passes through conflict-plagued Khyber Agency in northwest Pakistan.
Pakistani authorities have deployed heavy contingents of police and military forces on all major roads to curb militant attacks on supplies trucked through the region, to the northwest Pakistan, and subsequently into eastern Afghanistan.
The rampant attacks, especially in the Khyber region, have however forced NATO to look for alternative routes, including through Central Asia, into Afghanistan.

The attack was a revenge of the killing of a cleric Maulana Amin, who was killed in an air strike by the Pakistani forces a few months ago.

Ce scandale particulièrement révoltant a éclaté le mois dernier suite à un article publié par le premier quotidien suédois, Aftonbladet, révélant que l’armée israélienne avait kidnappé de jeunes Palestiniens et que leurs corps mutilés avaient été retournés quelques jours plus tard.
La révélation avait rendu furieux les responsables israéliens et les avait incités à demander au gouvernement suédois de condamner l’article et son auteur, ce que la Suède a catégoriquement refusé.
S’exprimant lors d’une conférence, Barakeh a demandé à Israël de restituer les corps de Palestiniens ensevelis quelque part dans les Territoires Occupés, et a demandé pourquoi Tel-Aviv persistait à garder les corps alors « qu’il n’y a pas pire façon de punir un homme et sa famille que de le tuer. »
« L’obligation de prouver sa bonne foi incombe à Israël, et tant qu’il refuse de dire dans quel état sont les corps, ou refuse de les retourner, il cache quelque chose de terrible », a-t-il prévenu.
Les fonctionnaires de l’Autorité palestinienne [de Ramallah] ont demandé à Israël de restituer les corps de Palestiniens tués.
Ils ont estimé que « le monde devait être vigilant sur ce que fait Israël, » en parlant des efforts de Tel-Aviv pour dissimuler les corps des victimes palestiniennes, l’objectif d’Israël étant de dissimuler la preuve de ses crimes dont le trafic d’organes fait partie.
Selon les organisations palestiniennes des droits de l’homme, Israël détient 275 corps qu’il refuse de restituer à leurs familles.

The Dutroux case has led to a reform of justice, which had as a result to provide immunity to the "She-Dominator of the 3rd Sex" , exposed for the production and sale of sado child porn of the Zandvoort/Nihoul/Dutroux branch, without the Senate raising one question.
In February 2001, the NGO Werkgroep Morkhoven, was looking Robert Jan Warmerdam, a Dutch prostitute since he was 13-years-old, who at the age of 28, still lived in the sadomasochistic community of Amsterdam. The charges retained against Messinger included the death of a 19-years-old girl from Antibes, during a pseudo satanic ritual. His objective was to sell films with real crimes, not to venerate Satan, but to make money. Daniel Messinger has managed to be released on parole after six months, which naturally enabled him to escape.
Mistress Roxanne was selling her production to Gerard Menoud, the "King of Porn", who three months after the hearing of the "She-Dominator of the 3rd Sex" on her contacts with Nihoul, was victim of an amazing French miscarriage of "justice": the tribunal appointed four court experts, one of his own former employees in the porn industry, who led him bankruptcy, then lead him into prison. The "King of Porno" has employed a follower of Pasteur Doucé, who is the founder of the network CHRIST LIBERATOR and member of networks TORO-BRAVO and CRIES-UNICEF, whose production was in the ZANDVOORT file. Gerard Menoud militates for adult porn, but denies any paedocriminal production. He wrote a book rich in information, in which he recognizes that his judgement can be faded by serious violence of which no one had protected him when he was child.
Belgium did not want the Dutroux/Nihoul and Co prosecution linked with the international press reporting the "King of Porno", the "She-Dominator of 3rd Sex" or the ex-children prostitutes: these boys who became girls, dying of AIDS and ready to go in prison to stop the vicious circle. The court of Arlon was given the responsibility to condemn Marc Dutroux as isolated predator; the press was in charge of making Nihoul pass for victim of miscarriage of justice and the Werkgroep Morkhoven as liars and protectors of paedophiles. Michel Forgeot and Dolores Bara, condemned in 1988 for procuring and keeping a house of vice with the Atrébates swinger's club, were cleared of the same charges in 2004, for the Dolo swinger's club. The prejudice was not established, even if the prostitution could not clearly be ruled out, according to the judgement, which underlines that "the evolution of the manners" must also be taken for account.

Two martyrdom operations strike the most secure strongholds of the crusaders' military leadership at the Mogadishu Airport
After careful monitoring and high security measures, and after prayers and supplication to Allah in the last 10 days of Ramadan, especially on the 27th of Ramadan, the Mujahidiin brothers executed this latest operation in the Winds of Victory Campaign. On the 27th of Ramadan 1430, corresponding to September 17, 2009, Allah empowered your brothers in the Martyrdom Brigade to confuse the plans of the enemy targeting our Islamic Ummah and her sons the Mujahidiin. This occurred through the destruction and demolition of two of the safest, most forbidding headquarters of the crusader's military leadership at the Mogadishu Airport.
One of the headquarters belonged to the high-ranking officers and officials from the crusader mercenaries known as AMISOM. At the moment of the explosion, a meeting was being conducted between the apostate government's security chiefs and high-ranking officials from the leadership of the African crusaders. They were planning to initiate a broad operation after Ramadan against the fortresses of the Mujahidiin. {Those before them indeed plotted, but Allâh struck at the foundation of their building, and then the roof fell down upon them, from above them, and the torment overtook them from directions they did not perceive.} Thus their headquarters was completely destroyed and most of the people inside were either killed or injured. The other headquarters belonged to NATO, an ally of the northern fleet and security advisors for the United Nations and European and American security companies who came to aid the apostate government and liquidate the Mujahidiin. This headquarters were subject to tight security, but Allah forced their intrigues down their throats and their dreams were scattered.
As for the reasons for targeting these two headquarters, they are as follows --
1. Revenge for the Muslim people killed daily in cold blood, when they are guilty of nothing but keeping faith in Allah Alone and sheltering the Mujahidiin.
2. Revenge for the brother, the Commander Abu Yusif Salih al-Nabhani and his 3 brothers - may Allah accept them - whose pure blood has to yet dried.
3. To shuffle the papers of the enemy and confuse their plotting to perpetrate more crimes against the Muslim people.
The two operations were conducted by the Heroes of the Martyrdom Battalion belonging to the Shabaab al Mujahidiin Movement who mounted two car bombs and then with the aid of Allah, drove smoothly and easily into the depths of the enemy. They blew up the strongholds of the cross, giving the infidels and their minions a drink from the cups of humiliation and shame. Through this work,. Allâh treated the chests of the Faithful people and drove the rage from their hearts. Praise be to Allah once and twice, and thanks be to Allah the Eternal one.
Approximately two hours after the operations, the crusaders admitted that 9 crusaders, most of them officers, were killed. Among them was the second in command of the AMISOM forces, the Burundi general Joefinal Ningaruza. The military commander of the crusader AMISOM, the Ugandan general Nathan Mujissa received injuries to his head - may Allah hasten his death.

According to reports, two rockets landed inside the airport, but did not have accurate information about the losses so far. Suicide Bombings Part of Tactical Shift by North Caucasus Rebels

In recent months attacks by insurgents in the North Caucasus have risen in intensity. More ominously, however, the range of targets -as well as the style of attacks- appears to demonstrate a newfound tactical capability which challenges the April announcement by the federal authorities that the counter-terrorist operation in Chechnya had ended. Largely overlooked at the time, a video statement was issued in April by Doku Umarov -the leader of the Caucasus Emirate- announcing the revival of the Riyadh-us-Saliheyn, a unit of suicide bombers linked to the insurgency which had been disbanded in 2006, at the behest of Umarov's predecessor Abdul Khalim Sadulayev (www.kavkazcenter.com, July 7, 2006).
Umarov's video address marked a tactical shift by the separatists, which had its roots in late 2008. On September 30, a suicide attack directed against the Ingush Interior Minister, Musa Medov, took place (North Caucasus Weekly, October 3, 2008). The attack mirrored an earlier bombing in April 2004, when a vehicle-borne explosive was used in an attempt to assassinate the then Ingush President, Murat Zyazikov. Zyazikov survived the 2004 attack, as did Medov in 2008, but the revival of targeted assassination using suicide terrorism signaled a clear tactical shift by the leadership of the Caucasus Emirate. In Ingushetia, heavy-handed security measures by the federal authorities, coupled with inter-clan rivalries, corruption and poverty meant that unabated lawlessness as well as rebel activity had increased. The federal authorities responded by sending more troops and police units to Ingushetia, replacing the incumbent President Zyazikov with Yunus-Bek Yevkurov in November 2008.
At around the same time, Umarov signaled that the insurgency maintained a credible military presence, although he indicated that financial difficulties had hindered its ability to mount sustained attacks in Chechnya proper in 2008. However some notable attacks did occur, including a suicide attack by two bombers against a federal military base in Vedeno in August 2008. Then, on November 6, a female bomber detonated explosives in a local taxi-van, killing over a dozen people in the North Ossetian capital, Vladikavkaz. Even though no claims of responsibility were issued at the time, those two attacks, coupled with the attack on Medov, indicated that a jamaat in Chechnya and the Ingush jamaat had once again resorted to the use of suicide terrorism.
According to the separatists, confirmation of this tactical shift came in 2009 when Umarov issued a statement indicating that Vladikavkaz was considered part of the operational zone of the Ingush jamaat, led by Emir Magas (Akhmed Yevloyev) (www.kavkazcenter.com, May 27). In an earlier statement Umarov indicated that the Riyadh us-Salihyen, which was now referred to as a military jamaat in its own right, had been revived, and was responsible for the 2008 suicide attacks. Umarov also indicated that further attacks would follow as part of a "year of offensive" (www.kavkazcenter.com, May 17).
So far, at least six attacks have followed the announcement by Umarov. The first came when a car bomb was driven into the motorcade of the newly installed Ingush President on June 21. The attack killed a number of bodyguards and badly wounded Yevkorov himself. This was followed, on July 26, by an attack by a lone bomber at a concert hall in Grozny. That attack killed a number of senior police officials (Interfax, July 26). The two attacks indicated that the tactical shift announced earlier in the year had become a reality. The targets, as well as the audacious well-planned nature of the attack in Chechnya proper, and the attack on the Ingush presidential motorcade -which was later claimed on behalf of the Riyadh us-Salihyen in a statement by Umarov- were coordinated attempts to attack the federal administrations in Chechnya and Ingushetia (www.kavkazcenter.com, September 1).
The next attack conducted by the Ingush jamaat was directed against the district headquarters of the police in Nazran. On August 17, attackers drove a minivan into the court yard of the police compound, detonating explosives (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru, August 24). The resulting explosion destroyed the building, killed over twenty policemen and wounded over a hundred. It was the largest single attack by the rebels since 2005, and was quickly claimed as an "act of sabotage" as part of wave of terrorism in a statement posted on a rebel website (www.kavkazcenter.com, August 21). This was followed by the rebel website releasing video footage of the attack. The footage was accompanied by an announcement that the young ideologue and convert, Said Buryatsky, who aligned himself with the rebel movement in 2008, had martyred himself in the attack (www.kavkazcenter.com, August 26). Although it led to much speculation, the statement indicating that Buryatsky was driving the minivan was later retracted, and declared as an administrative error, in a statement posted on another website.
Two further attacks occurred in Grozny on August 21 when coordinated bomb attacks -by suicide attackers using bicycles- were detonated near police officers on two streets in Grozny. Another suicide attack occurred shortly afterwards in Chechnya on August 25. A male bomber detonated explosives next to a group of policemen, killing four and wounding another in Mesker-Yurt. Interior ministry officials announced that the alleged attacker was Magomed Shakhidov, a member of Khusein Gakayev's jamaat (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru, August 25). Three days later news reports indicated that two other members of the Gakayev jamaat had been surrounded in a residential block near Shali (ITAR-TASS, August 28). They detonated explosives, killing themselves and wounding three police officers.
It appears that the suicide attacks in Chechnya in late 2008 and 2009 were led, in part, by Gakayev's jamaat. Federal authorities linked him to the concert hall and Mesker-Yurt suicide attacks (ITAR-TASS, August 28). This wave of attacks, along with the other attacks organized by the Ingush jamaat in Nazran and North Ossetia in 2008 and 2009, feed into a broader tactical shift by the leadership of the Caucasus Emirate, once again stretching the ability of federal forces to counter a new generation of rebel fighters in the Islamist insurgency.

Local authority in Falluja imposed a curfew as from Thursday evening, Sep. 17, until further notice.
"Police patrols told residents through loud speakers of imposing the curfew that includes the movement of vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles," police source said.
The source did not say why the curfew is imposed.
The curfew has been imposed one day after police said that all night movements in Anbar province are banned.
It is note worthy that armed groups blew the home of Sajar Sahwa Commander in Falluja killing Sheikh Rabee' al-Sulaiman and one of his companions and wounding two others.
In a landmark decision, Britain's trade unions have voted overwhelmingly to commit to build a mass boycott movement, disinvestment and sanctions on Israel for a negotiated settlement based on justice for Palestinians.
The motion was passed at the 2009 TUC Annual Congress in Liverpool today (17 September), by unions representing 6.5 million workers across the UK.
Hugh Lanning, chair of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said: "This motion is the culmination of a wave of motions passed at union conferences this year, following outrage at Israel's brutal war on Gaza, and reflects the massive growth in support for Palestinian rights. We will be working with the TUC to develop a mass campaign to boycott Israeli goods, especially agricultural products that have been produced in illegal Israeli settlements in the Palestinian West Bank."
The motion additionally called for the TUC General Council to put pressure on the British government to end all arms trading with Israel and support moves to suspend the EU-Israel trade agreement. Unions are also encouraged to disinvest from companies which profit from Israel's illegal 42-year occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.
The motion was tabled by the Fire Brigades Union. The biggest unions in the UK, including Unite, the public sector union, and UNISON, which represents health service workers, voted in favor of the motion.
The motion also condemned the Israeli trade union Histadrut's statement supporting Israel's war on Gaza, which killed 1,450 Palestinians in three weeks, and called for a review of the TUC's relationship with Histadrut.
Britain's trade unions join those of South Africa and Ireland in voting to use a mass boycott campaign as a tool to bring Israel into line with international law, and pressure it to comply with UN resolutions that encourage justice and equality for the Palestinian people.
Seven-year-old Zahra looks like a typical Afghan girl in her traditional long dress and scarf, her short black hair peeking out from her head covering. She sticks close to home, seldom venturing far from her house. But it is not tradition that keeps her home but fear.
On the night of August 22 2008, all of Zahra’s immediate family was killed by American bombs. In pursuit of Taleban commander Mullah Siddiq, United States Special Forces and the Afghan army launched an airstrike on the village of Azizabad in Shindand district of Herat. An investigation by the United Nations said that 90 people, 60 children and 30 adults, died.
The American military initially denied that any civilians were harmed in the attack. Only after prolonged pressure, in October of last year, did they acknowledge that the strike killed 33 civilians.
Zahra’s father, mother, sister and two brothers died that night. She is the only survivor, together with her grandmother, Maryam, known in the village as Pori. One year later the two traumatised females, one seven years old the other 75, are still living in Azizabad, in a small, dirty, three-room house donated to them by a kind-hearted neighbour.
The house the pair inhabit has no doors and no windows. Inside it is dark and dusty – the floor is carpeted with old sacks. It looks more like a dirty storeroom than a place where people live. There are some teacups, two buckets full of water, three small pots and three threadbare blankets. Every day Zahra cleans and arranges the few items they possess.
The rest of the time she sits alone, staring into the void.
"I loved my family very much," she said, tears in her dark eyes. "Every moment I hear the voices of my mother, father, sister and brothers calling me, but I can’t see them. We had a good life. I used to play with my brothers and sister on the street. My father was Abdurrashid, my mother was Khumari, my sister was Huma and my brothers were Halim and Salim. The Americans killed them and now I am alone."
Suddenly bitter, she adds, "The American killed everyone in the village. They killed my friends and other children. I hate them."
She recalls the events of that terrifying day. "Explosions woke me up in the night. I ran to the desert, where I drifted off to sleep again. When I awoke, I ran home and I saw parts of human bodies scattered all around, and heard the cries of survivors," she said.
"I don’t remember who told me that my family were all dead dead. At first I didn’t believe it, so I went to see if it was really true. Then I saw their bodies, all mixed with blood and dirt. When they took all the martyrs to the graveyard to be buried, I was all alone and neighbours took me to their home. Then my grandmother learned of what happened, and now I am with her."
Now every time a plane passes Zahra cries and throws herself into her grandmother’s arms.
"I love my granddaughter," Maryam said. "I see my son in her soul. But when a plane passes overhead, she clings to me so tightly, and her body shakes so much, that I am afraid one day she will die. Then I will lose the last race of my son."
But Maryam may not be able to give Zahra the support that she needs. The older woman seems mentally unstable, constantly murmuring to herself and repeating everything she says many times.
Maryam, though, is resisting attempts by an aid organisation to relocate her and her granddaughter to Herat city.
Soraya Pakzad from Neda-e-Zan, an organization that assists Afghan women in trouble, says that they had arranged accommodations for both Zahra and Maryam, but the latter refuses to leave Shindand.
"She does not want to leave the place where her son lived," Pakzad said. "When we showed them the accomodation we had prepared for them, the grandmother tried to get away as soon as possible, saying, 'The government wants to imprison us’."
She added that Zahra clung to her grandmother, fearful of strangers and crying easily, "Both Zahra and her grandmother are unstable."
Pakzad is worried about the Zahra’s future and is trying to raise money from other national and international charity organisations. "We are concerned that the grandmother will marry her off to somebody at a young age, and thereby make things even worse for Zahra," she said.
Zahra is not alone. Abdurrashid, 45, a resident of Azizabad, told IWPR that the people of Shindand district would never forget the events of August 22, 2008.
"The Americans massacred our people and then said that we were all taleban," he said bitterly. "This inhuman act will always be remembered, by people in our area and all over the country."
In the meantime, he and others try to help Zahra and Maryam as much as possible.
Others have also offered assistance. US secretary of state Hillary Clinton said she would help the girl after she heard about her plight on Radio Liberty. Also a politician who was thinking of running for president, Dr Dawood Mirakai, looked up Zahra during a visit to Azizabad and gave her some money.
But for now Zahra is still living in her broken house, in the same village, relying on occasional assistance from neighbours. She has two friends, Amina and Hangama, with whom she goes to school. She doesn’t learn much, she says.
"Other children have parents who help them. I have no parents," said Zahra. Then she began to cry. "I cannot talk any more," she said. "I must go now."

Somalia: African union terrorists suffer great losses.
MOGADISHU (AFP) - Twin suicide bombings ripped through the headquarters of African Union "peacekeepers" in Somalia Thursday, killing 14 soldiers in the deadliest such attack against the force. "At least two bombs" exploded at the force's headquarters in a fortified compound at Mogadishu airport, the AU said in a statement which condemned what it called a "barbaric attack" in which at least 15 other soldiers were wounded. Islamist rebels claimed responsibility for the attack. "Among those who died is the AMISOM deputy commander Major General Juvenal Niyonguruza," who was about to complete his tour of duty in Somalia, Ugandan army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Felix Kulayigye said. Ten Burundi soldiers were killed, the country's army spokesman Lazare Nduhayo told AFP, raising an earlier toll of nine to 14. "Five soldiers died on the spot and five others succumbed to their injuries," he said in Bujumbura. The peacekeepers' commander, General Nathan Mugisha, who took up his post only last month, suffered minor injuries. The circumstances surrounding the attack were unclear Thursday but witnesses said the bombers entered the compound using two vehicles with United Nations markings. Kulayigye, who said Mugisha was about to host negotiations at the compound, said the bombers had got in "with a group that was coming for talks". He did not elaborate. United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon condemned the blast in the "strongest terms." Somali "government" spokesman Abdulkadir Walayo condemned the "terrorist" attack, which he said was carried out by "two criminals using previously robbed UN cars." A suicide bomber killed six Italian soldiers and at least four Afghan civilians when he blew up a truck filled with explosives next to a Nato convoy in Kabul today. Three more Italian troops and around 30 Afghans were wounded in the blast, defence officials said.
The force of the explosion blew one of the Italian army jeeps across two lanes of traffic on the crowded airport road, destroying a number of civilian cars and smashing in the fronts of shops and stalls lining the highway.
Nato troops, including British soldiers, prised the bodies of several Italian soldiers out of the twisted wreckage of their destroyed vehicle, which lay on its side amid bloodied helmets, ammunition belts and military backpacks thrown from the vehicle by the blast. Five body bags lay beside the burnt-out jeep as military investigators arrived to measure the blast crater and inspect the damage.
The Taleban claimed responsibility for the attack, identifying the suicide bomber as a man named Ayatulla, who they said had waited in his bomb truck until the convoy passed next to him in the slow-moving traffic.
Witnesses said that a number of Afghan civilians were also killed, including a man and his wife who had been out shopping for new clothes for the Muslim holiday of Eid, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. As Afghan police pushed back the crowd of onlookers, occasionally beating people with sticks, a man in a bloodied robe marched past with a shell-shocked little boy in his arms.
"We were just going past the shops when there was a big explosion, and we were both wounded," said the man, heading off to find a hospital. A small clinic in the row of mud-brick shops was wrecked by the explosion, which punched a hole into the tarmac surface of the road.
There were also angry confrontations between Italian soldiers collecting evidence from the explosion and local Afghan crime scene investigators who tried to remove some of the debris for their own inquiries. The Italian soldiers forced the Afghans to leave all the debris to them.
The attack was the most deadly strike against Italian peacekeeping troops in years. In November 2003, a suicide car bomber killed 19 carabinieri in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.
The Taleban has been mounting a steady series of car bombings in the capital, including one at the gate of a Nato base by the airport a week ago that killed three Afghan civilians. Another car bombed killed seven Afghans when a suicide car bomber drove up to the headquarters of the Nato-led mission and blew himself up.
In August, a massive suicide car bomb attack on Isaf's Kabul headquarters killed seven Afghan civilians, underscoring the increasingly brazen nature of the Taliban threat as the Islamist militia wages a fierce insurgency. There are around 100,000 US and Nato troops in Afghanistan, facing down an increasingly powerful Taleban insurgency.
MOGADISHU, Somalia — A witness says she saw 11 bodies after two car bombs blew up at the main base of African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu.
The witness, who did not want to be named for fear of retribution, counted 11 corpses at the scene. It was unclear if they included the remains of the suicide bombers.
The blasts Thursday blew out nearby windows and shrouded the sky in black smoke. The AU said "peacekeepers" were wounded, but did not elaborate. The African Medical and Research Foundation said the U.N. has asked for help evacuating 15 "critically injured" people.
An Islamist insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack at Mogadishu's airport and said the targets were senior peacekeeping officials and Somali government officials who were meeting there.

And so are the days (good and not so good), We give to men by turns, that Allâh may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allâh likes not the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers).}{al-Imran 140}
We bring the Islamic Ummah the glad tidings of the martyrdom of the Commander Sheikh Abu Yusif Salih Ali Salih al-Nabhani, alongside a group of his brothers. This took place late Monday morning, the 24th of Ramadhan 1430, corresponding to September 14, 2009. A crusader war plane with assistance from the military fleets off the coast of Muslim Somalia targeted the Commander Sheikh Salih Ali Salih al-Nabhani, also known as Abu Yusif, as well as some of his companions - may Allâh have mercy on them - as they were traveling through areas of the Islamic Region of Lower Shabelle. The crusader enemies hovered and then raided the car that was carrying the Commander Abu Yusif and his brothers - may Allâh accept them.
Six helicopters participated in the attack, which began with heavy shooting in a focused manner, targeting the brothers’ car. Two of the helicopters then began a quick descent thinking that they had subdued the brothers. But the Lions, despite their small numbers and their simple weapons, were able - by the grace of Allâh - to respond to the enemy and resist them. The engagement there lasted for nearly one hour, until the four other planes intervened to reinforce the first batch of the enemy. It was by the will of Allâh that the Commander Sheikh Abu Yusif became a martyr with a group of his companions. The enemy rushed to the scene to seize the bodies of the brothers, and we do not yet know the extent of the losses suffered by the enemy during the confrontation.
We reassure the entirety of the Muslim Ummah and her sons the Mujahidiin, and give them the glad tidings that we stand in the midst of a decisive battle with the zionist-crusader alliance. The battles go back and forth, with some wins and some losses, but our fighters are in Paradise and their fighters are in Hell. This is what we say of our beloved brother Commander Sheikh Salih Ali Salih al-Nibhani for whom Allâh decreed martyrdom in this incident. And it is for precisely this reason that we congratulate his family and his Ummah. Martyrdom is what his heart craved. His soul strove for nearly two decades to immigrate to Allâh and escape through his religion and his aqeedah.
For Allah the Almighty says: {He who emigrates (from his home) in the Cause of Allâh, will find on earth many dwelling places and plenty to live by. And whosoever leaves his home as an emigrant unto Allâh and His Messenger, and death overtakes him, his reward is then surely incumbent upon Allâh. Allah disappointed the aspirations of our dim-witted enemies with the delusion that the fall of the Commander of the Mujahidiin will extinguish both the flame of jihad in the Muslim lands and the jihadi awakening that shakes the thrones of the infidels and the apostates. The Mujahedeen in southern Thailand say they are revolting against government and their Nazi puppets because because of their war crimes, widespread corruption, forcing children into prostitution and sexual abuses of female prisoners backed up by Washington and their "war on Islam".

Two British soldiers have died after fighting in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said on Wednesday, taking to 216 the number of British servicemen killed in the conflict since 2001.
A soldier, from the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, was killed in an explosion while on foot patrol in Gereshk district of Helmand province in the south of country, the ministry said.
"Everyone in Task Force Helmand is deeply saddened by the death of this brave soldier," said the spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson.
Earlier on Wednesday, a soldier died in hospital in Britain of wounds he suffered in an explosion also in Helmand province, the ministry said.
The soldier from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment had been wounded on Saturday while travelling in a vehicle on a patrol in the rural northwest of Helmand, where British forces are fighting the Taliban.
He had been airlifted to the Royal College of Defence Medicine in Birmingham, central England, for treatment but died of his injuries.

The Americans have some years back bombarded in some refuge camps in the border between Somalia and Kenya and in the thick Jungles of Kudha in the lower Juba region tracing for the Moujahideen.
Though the Iraq War has long since become an after-thought amid Obama Administration claims that the “drawdown” in on track, the Pentagon is reporting today that Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has approved a request to send about 1,000 additional troops to Iraq.
The latest report comes less than a week after it was revealed that the Pentagon has added thousands of additional contractors to Iraq, ostensibly to replace US troops during the drawdown.
But of course the drawdown isn’t actually happening. President Obama inherited a war with roughly 135,000 troops in Iraq, and today there are 131,000 and thousands of contractors. Officials have previously insisted there will be no meaningful troop level changes until at least 60 days after January’s parliamentary elections.
Now, over two and a half years after the “surge” in Iraq, troop levels are still above pre-surge levels and apparently will be rising in the near term. Ambassador Hill may claim the US is sticking to its timetable, but it seems that at some point such a highly touted withdrawal will have to involve the removal of some actual troops.
The Obama administration has blessed three controversial provisions of the Patriot Act that expand the government’s reach in counter-terrorism investigations.
In a Sept. 14 letter to lawmakers, Assistant Attorney General Ron Weich said the Justice Department supports the use of roving wiretaps, the authority to access business records and the ability to track so-called "lone-wolf" terrorists, or those without visible ties to a foreign terrorist organization. The provisions sunset at the end of the year.
The Justice Department’s position was expected. During his confirmation hearings, Attorney General Eric Holder told members Congress he would review the provisions but said he would likely endorse their re-authorization.
"The tools that we have been given by Congress in FISA are important ones, so I would look at all three and make the determination of whether I would be able to support them," Holder told member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "I expect that I will."
Weich said the administration is willing to consider changes that would increase privacy protections, as long as they preserve the effectiveness of the tools. Still, his letter embittered civil libertarians who have long opposed the measures.
"We are very encouraged to learn that the Obama administration has stated a willingness to discuss reforming the deeply flawed provisions in the Patriot Act, though we are disappointed at its support for the reauthorization of the three expiring provisions," Michael Macleod-Ball, acting director of the ACLU’s Washington Legislative Office, said in a statement.
A refresher on the three provisions:
Lone wolf: Allows government to track a target without any discernible affiliation to a foreign power, such as an international terrorist group. The provision only applies only to non-U.S. persons. It has never been used in a FISA application.
Business records: Allows investigators to compel third parties, including financial services and travel and telephone companies, to provide them access to a suspect’s records without the suspect’s knowledge. From 2004 to 2007, the FISA court issued about 220 orders to produce business records.
Roving wiretaps: Allows the government to monitor phone lines or Internet accounts that a terrorism suspect may be using, whether or not others who are not suspects also regularly use them. The government must provide the FISA court with specific information showing the suspect is purposely switching means of communication to evade detection. The government has applied for roving wiretaps an average of 22 times a year since 2001.
The House and Senate Judiciary committees are scheduled to hold hearings on the provisions next week. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the Senate Judiciary chairman, said in a statement today he was "pleased that the Justice Department has signaled its willingness to work with Congress" on the issue.
