Sweatshop Conditions in US Cities

A new low-wage industry study [Broken Laws, Unprotected Workers. Violations of Employment and Labor Laws in America's Cities] by the Center for Urban Economic Development, the National Employment Law Project, and the UCLA Institute for Research on Labor and Employment exposes the dark side of workforce exploitation in America's three largest cities - New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

From January through August 2008, researchers conducted 90-minute interviews with 4,387 "front-line" workers, aged 18 or older, using "innovative, rigorous methodology" to reach vulnerable people "often missed in standard surveys, such as (undocumented) immigrants and those paid in cash." The goal was to be as statistically representative of workplace violations as possible for a population of about 1.64 million workers, or 15% of the total workforce studied.

The report documented flagrant workplace violations, core protections most Americans take for granted, including a guaranteed minimum wage, overtime pay, regular meal and other breaks, worker compensation for on-the-job injuries, and the right to bargain collectively for better wages, benefits, and working conditions.

Overall, the study found widespread labor law violations, including:

-- below minimum wage pay;
-- unpaid overtime;
-- denial of meal and other breaks;
-- illegal pay deductions;
-- tip stealing for tipped workers;
-- illegal employer retaliation against workers demanding their rights or attempting to form a union; and
-- some workers denied legal protection by being classified as independent contractors.

Workplace violations varied by industry and job type. Abuses were most common in apparel and textile manufacturing, personal and repair services, and private household employment. They were much lower in residential construction, social assistance, education, and home health care, and somewhat frequent at restaurants, retail and grocery stores, and warehouses.

Workers getting a flat weekly wage or cash experienced high violation rates compared to those paid a regular hourly rate or by company check.

Workers in firms with under 100 employees were more at risk than those at larger companies, but not all employers were scofflaws.

Immigrants, women, the foreign born, and others in vulnerable categories were most at risk, but all workers (even the better educated) face potential workplace abuses against which they can get little redress.

Weekly wage theft affects over two-thirds of workers, costing them an average 15% of their pay.

The following industries were studied:

-- restaurants and hotels;
-- apparel and textile manufacturing;
-- retail, grocery, and drug stores;
-- food and furniture manufacturing, transportation, and warehousing;
-- security, building and grounds services;
-- social assistance;
-- education;
-- residential construction;
-- personal and repair services;
-- home health care;
-- private households; and
-- other categories, including finance and other health care services.

The following jobs were studied:

-- cooks, food preparers, and dishwashers;
-- sewing and garment workers;
-- building services and grounds workers;
-- factory and packaging workers;
-- child care;
-- general construction;
-- home health care;
-- retail sales and bank tellers;
-- maids and housekeepers;
-- cashiers;
-- waiters, cafeteria workers, and bartenders;
-- stock/office clerks and couriers;
-- car washing, parking lot attendants, and drivers;
-- beauty, dry cleaning, and general repair workers;
-- security guards; and
-- teachers' assistants.

In February 2009, Amish Markets, a leading New York gourmet grocery chain, agreed to pay nearly $1.5 million in unpaid wages to 550 workers. In the same month, the Los Angeles city attorney filed criminal charges against the owners of four car washes for failure to pay minimum wages and grant employees breaks. In Chicago, a large temporary staffing agency settled a class action suit by paying over 3,300 employees nearly half a million dollars.

In 2008, Wal-Mart settled 63 "off-the-clock" abuse cases in 42 states totaling $352 million in unpaid wages to hundreds of thousands of current and former employees. More details below. In the same year, a court-appointed official awarded more than 200 FedEx drivers $14.4 million for being illegally classified as independent contractors.

In large and small companies alike, these examples are commonplace, disturbing, and deteriorating further during hard economic times as recent reports suggest. Working Americans nationwide face increased exploitation as layoffs and cost cutting force unacceptable demands on them, unlikely to be easily reversed.

Prevalence of Workplace Violations

Labor laws since the New Deal aren't working. They're not enforced, have been greatly weakened, are out of date, exempt some industries and occupations partially or entirely, and leave the most vulnerable, like immigrants, minorities and women, subject to exploitation.

Violations found in the week prior to the survey included:

-- 26% got below minimum wage pay;
-- 73% experiencing an overtime violation got only their regular hourly rate;
-- 19% were unpaid for overtime, and 8% were underpaid or promised "comp time;"
-- 17% weren't paid for off-the-clock work;
-- 18% were denied meal breaks;
-- 11% experienced meal break interruptions by employers or supervisors;
-- 12% worked through their meal breaks;
-- 43% got shorter than legally required meal breaks;
-- 4% were paid late;
-- 57% got no pay stub;
-- 2% had illegal pay deductions;
-- 2% had tips stolen;
-- 6% of tipped workers were paid below their legal minimum wage; and
-- 77% of Los Angeles workers were denied or got a shortened rest break.

Violations in the previous 12-month period included:

-- 28% worked off-the-clock without pay;
-- 25% were paid late;
-- 17% were paid less than owed;
-- 6% weren't paid at all;
-- 3% were subjected to repeated verbal abuses;
-- 5% experienced employer retaliation for complaining or attempting to organize a union;
-- 5% were denied worker compensation for the most recent on-the-job injury; and
-- 6% of tipped workers were paid below their legal minimum wage.

Minimum Wage Violations

Employers must pay all workers (full or part-time, documented or undocumented) at or above federal or state minimum wages, whichever is higher. Yet 26% of those surveyed were underpaid, and the amounts weren't trivial as 60% lost on average $1.43 per hour.

Overtime Violations

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) mandates "time and a half" pay for all covered employees for weekly hours worked exceeding 40. Yet 73% of "at risk" workers weren't paid the legally required rate, and 19% overall were unpaid or underpaid for overtime.

"Off-the-Clock" Violations

This is work taking place before or after regular shifts. Employers are legally required to pay for all hours worked. Yet often they take advantage and don't.

Meal Break Violations

By law, New York, California and Illinois require employers to provide uninterrupted meal breaks for workers, although their length varies by state. Yet violations were frequent and took a variety of forms, including no break one or more times, shorter ones than mandated, employer interruptions, and having to work part of the time.

Other Pay Violations

As outlined above, they included late payments, no pay stubs, illegal deductions, and "tip stealing" from tipped workers.

Illegal Employer Retaliation

About 43% of workers complained about workplace abuses, and those attempting to form a union experienced employer or supervisor retaliation as follows:

-- 62% got pay cuts, less work, or worse assignments;
-- 47% experienced threats to be fired or to be reported to immigration authorities;
-- 35% were fired or suspended; and
-- 21% were otherwise harassed, abused, or given increased workloads.

Workers' Compensation

Laws vary by state, but in most cases employers must contribute to state worker compensation funds and carry insurance to cover the costs of on-the-job injuries or illnesses. Yet only 8% of injured workers during the previous three years filed a claim for their most recent injury, a clear sign that the system is dysfunctional because of how employers work it to their advantage.

Around 43% of seriously injured workers said they were required to work in spite of it. Another 30% said their employer refused any help, 13% were fired shortly afterward, 10% were required to be at work even if unable to perform their duties, and 3% were told not to file a claim.

In the past three years, about 50% of respondents suffering an on-the-job injury experienced a worker comp violation for their most recent one. Only 55% of those seriously injured sought treatment, and only 40% of those said their employers paid all or part of their medical bills. Only 6% of injured workers had company insurance cover their medical expenses as required.

Violations Vary by Job Category and Industry

Minimum wage violations vary significantly - most flagrantly in apparel and textile manufacturing, personal and repair services, and private households; less often in residential construction, social assistance, education, and home health care. Other industries fall somewhere in between.

Violations also vary by job category. Faring worst are child care workers, beauty, dry cleaning and general repair workers, and those employed as sewing and garment workers. Best off are general construction workers, waiters, cafeteria workers, bartenders, and teachers' assistants.

Overall, 64% of workers got hourly wages. The rest received either a flat weekly or daily amount. Non-hourly workers fared worst as well as those paid in cash, not company checks, and "piece rate" employees, subjected to unattainable productivity levels to earn minimum wages. In addition, companies with less than 100 employees had almost double the violations rate of larger firms.

Overtime violations occur frequently as 76% of respondents exceeding 40 hours work during the previous week were denied time-and-a-half pay as required. Non-hourly workers fared worst, especially with jobs in personal and repair services, private households, retail and drug stores, and home health care. Best off were food and furniture manufacturing, transportation, and warehousing employees. Again, companies with under 100 employees were the most flagrant violators.

Off-the-clock violations were also commonplace, affecting 70% of workers surveyed, unpaid for exceeding their regular shifts, especially in private households, social assistance, and home health care jobs.

Meal break violations affected 69% of workers, denied breaks or having them shortened or interrupted. Overall, study findings revealed "routine violations of labor and employment laws across the wide range of industries, occupations and workplaces....But the low-wage labor market is not monolithic (as) 49% (of workers said) their employers offered them health insurance, provided paid vacation days, paid sick days, or had given them a raise in the past year."

Workplace Violations Related to Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Other Worker Characteristics

Not surprisingly, US-born workers and those best educated fared best, undocumented foreign-born ones (especially Latinos) worst, and women experienced more violations than men over minimum wages. In contrast, overtime, off-the-clock, and meal break violations varied much less demographically.

Wage Theft

As noted above, it steals 15% of worker wages amounting to $2,634 annually on an average $17,616 total earnings. Also in a given week, over 1.1 million workers in the three cities studied experienced at least one pay-related violation costing them over $56 million in total - mostly over unpaid minimum wages but also the above cited abuses.

Protecting American Workers - What Can Be Done

The problem is endemic in key industries throughout the country, and has a profound effect on workers, their families and communities. The cities studied aren't unique as evidence nationwide suggests. Low-wage worker rights are compromised in jobs ranging from agriculture, meat and poultry processing, hotels, nursing homes, day care centers, retailing, and residential construction in every city where exploitive day labor hiring sites exist.

Ending employer abuses depends on strengthening labor laws and having federal and local governments enforce them. However, since passage of the landmark 1935 National Labor Relations (Wagner) Act, workers have been disadvantaged ever since, more than ever today at a time of weak unions, empowered companies, and an economic crisis letting employers cut jobs, wages and benefits freely, and have government turn a blind eye to their most egregious violations.

Fixing these problems needs new leadership in charge of mass organizing, building unity and strength of numbers, and educating workers on what they've lost and how to win it back. In a globalized corporate world and hostile governments, workers must go on the offensive, take to the streets, go on strike, hold boycotts, demand more from elected officials, replace unresponsive ones, and battle the old-fashioned way for fair labor laws and government officials they can count on for enforcement. Short of that, labor rights will keep deteriorating until workers across the board are totally at the mercy of unscrupulous employers, while government remains indifferent to their plight. Conditions are well eroded already, and nothing short of total mass-commitment has a chance to reverse it.

Addendum on Wal-Mart

With over $400 billion in sales and about 2.1 million employees, the company ranks third globally in the 2009 Fortune 500 rankings behind Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil.

In 2008, Wal-Mart's average full-time Associate, its most common position, earned $10.84 an hour (for a 34-hour week) or an annual income of $19,165, $2,000 below the federal poverty line for a family of four. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2, 2008), the average full-time Wal-Mart Associate last year earned 16% less than the average retail wage. At the same time, its CEO Lee Scott (January 2000 - January 2009) earned $29.7 million in total compensation.

On December 23, 2008, the company announced that it settled 63 wage and hour class action lawsuits, representing about 86% of the 73 total pending. Through evidence obtained and employee testimonies, these cases revealed company ruthlessness in keeping labor costs down and unions out.

Legal documents showed that managers are rewarded for forcing employees to work off-the-clock, skip meal and rest breaks, then manipulate time and wage records to cut costs. They also overwork minors and keep them during school hours. An internal July 2000 company audit revealed that these violations were longstanding. Company executives engaged in illegal activity and hid the evidence to avoid liability.

Under terms of the settlement, Wal-Mart agreed pay at least $352 million and perhaps as much as $640 million to present and former employees. According to Professor Paul Secunda of Marquette's School of Law, the company settled to avoid an even worse defeat, including what unionization might cost.

On October 23, 2003 in a 21-state raid, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested more than 250 undocumented workers at 61 Wal-Mart stores. As cleaning crews and janitors, they were forced to work seven days a week under harsh conditions at below minimum wage rates, no overtime, and according to one employee "no benefits, no health insurance, no nothing."

Jerusalem – Ma’an – Christians of several denominations gathered in Jerusalem Friday for a silent vigil in solidarity with besieged Islamic holy sites at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City.

"We are here to support Al-Aqsa and those who are confined inside it, we are here in support of Muslims whose dignity is humiliated and religious feelings are harmed by attacks on their holiest sites," Archbishop Atallah Hana told those gathered.

This sit-in was a response to the call of Muslim scholars and clergymen to consider Friday a day of solidarity with Jerusalemites, and Muslim holy sites under attack by Israeli forces. By Friday night, Israeli troops in a standoff with more than 100 Palestinian worshippers who refused to leave the Al-Aqsa Mosque gradually left the area.

Palestinian Christians of every denomination were joined by pilgrims from around the world, sitting silently in the ancient building at the heart of the Old City. In his speech to the faithful, the Archbishop said, "being here in this holy site comes in solidarity with our brothers in humanity, in belonging to this holy land and because of our belonging to this blessed city."

He said he considered "attacking Al-Aqsa an assault on our dignity and presence, identity, civilization and an assault the Christians as well as on the Muslims; we are one people with one cause."

He said: “For these reasons, I accepted to shake hands with the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, although I am an Islamist president, necessity required taking such a step.” “I say Shaykh Sharif is aware of the necessities, but he does not give them their right precedence. The truth is that with such excuse he is deceiving the Somali people, and portraying the event as a mere handshake with a woman that was required by necessity, in order to obscure a stark reality and in an attempt to cover it with this manipulation. In fact, with this handshake, he put his hand in the hand of the enemies, and contracted a support deal with them, sided by them, and favored their enmity and outward show over the mujahidin. “This is the truth of Shaykh Sharif`s handshake with the US Secretary of State. It was not a mere handshake with a passing woman. As for a discussion about the non-permissibility to shake hands with women from a religious standpoint, this is the view of the Murji`ah (non-righteous scholars) of this era. In that respect, they constrain religion and the Shari`ah. It is well-known that they (the non-righteous scholars) categorize within the great sins, on which they pour a great deal of talk, a great more thinking than that devoted to matters of infidelity and polytheism, and they are all so trivial compared to Sharif`s championing the infidels and siding by them against the mujahidin. “Prior to that and more specifically, on 6 August last year, the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton pledged to continue supporting the transitional government in Mogadishu, financially and militarily. At that time, Clinton met with the Somali President Shaykh Sharif Shaykh Ahmed in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, where she vowed to continue supporting his government in its confrontations with the mujahidin. “In a press conference she held with Shaykh Ahmed at the US embassy in Kenya on 6 August, Clinton said: “The international community and the United States continue to support the Somali transitional government.” She warned that the control of the Mujahidin Youth Movement over Mogadishu would provide a safe haven to Al-Qaeda Organization in Somalia, a matter that would threaten the United States. The US Secretary of State added that the United States takes the threats that arise from the extremist Mujahidin Youth Movement very seriously. “Thus, in fact, the issue relates to the security of America, which wants to turn or rather it has already turned Shaykh Sharif into a policeman to guard its interests in Somalia. It turned him into a puppet, an authorized agent, or a replica of the tyrants that rule in the other lands of Muslims today, and who are faithful to the care of Israeli and US interests in the region. Therefore, he sides with the US enemy, supporting it against the mujahidin, and surely not for Hilary Clinton`s blue eyes, Shaykh Sharif attacked al-Qaeda and said: “it is a terrorist organization that adopts the Takfiri ideology and makes permissible to shed the people`s blood,” He added: “Islam and Muslims disavow al-Qaeda`s actions.” He was acting totally like those heralds at the doors of hellfire, and the imposters, who follow the methodology of the one-eyed Antichrist in their employment of religion. They talk in one-eyed Antichrist`s name deceiving the people and confusing truth with falsehood and mixing the path to paradise with the path to hellfire. “Although the coming of the Antichrist will only happen at the end of time, the scholars stated that his type of sedition is present at all times. Every prophet warned his people of it, and our Prophet, prayers and peace be upon him, taught us to seek refuge from the Antichrist, and this sedition represents in every evil whose falsehood is disguised and beautified, and every truth that has been distorted and shrouded in suspicion that easily allure the weak minds and deceive those lacking clairvoyance. “The Antichrist will come with a paradise and a hellfire to allure the people and to mislead Muslims. However, the true believers will not be duped by his sedition and they will know that his paradise, which that he embellishes in the eyes of the people and calls them to it, is in truth a blazing hellfire. The hellfire, which he is warning them of and keeping them from, is the real paradise, and Shaykh Sharif`s paradise is an American hellfire. The hellfire of the mujahidin, which Sharif is keeping the people from and describing it as Takfir and terrorism, is a true paradise in the shade of the Shari`ah. “Thankfully, the Somali people make a distinction between the American paradise, which is in fact the hellfire of AIDS, moral deterioration, economic corruption, social ruin, and rejection of God`s laws. Moreover, the paradise of the mujahidin is the paradise of security, prosperity, and success in this world, and the sanctuary that God has promised and prepared for His righteous servants in the hereafter. “The two paradises, the true paradise and the false paradise cannot be mixed up, but by those who are blind. Perhaps what took place last June confirms that America`s heavy and clear meddling in the affairs of Somalia has became obvious to all. As soon as the control of the Mujahidin Youth Movement over large areas of Mogadishu, and their approaching the presidential palace were announced, Washington was set in motion to provide weapons and ammunition to its associates in Sharif`s government in order to confront the advance of the mujahidin. Actually, a few days ago, and more exactly on 14 September, the US was actively involved in a raid by US helicopters in southern Somalia to assassinate jihadist Salih al-Nabhani, may God rest his soul, and Washington justified its action by saying that he was involved in attacks against US and Israeli interests in neighboring Kenya. “In conclusion, the people are now aware that there is large US support for Shaykh Sharif and his government against the Muslim mujahidin, who are said to be affiliated to al-Qaeda everywhere, to justify every open support and every blatant meddling. Therefore, it has become clear to everyone that the American war is no longer a war against al-Qaeda (and terrorism as they like to call it) in Afghanistan and Iraq and which by the way extended to include Pakistan, Somalia and all parts of the world, in fact, it is a war on Islam and jihad. Whether the mujahidin in Somalia or elsewhere announce their adherence to the jihad and the mujahidin around the world or not, as long as they are upright in the methodology of truth and fervent in defending the sanctity of their religion and the interests of their ummah, declaring their innocence of the Americans and their collaborators in the area, the enemies of God, the Americans and their agents among the ruling tyrants and their associates among the scholars of evil will associate them with terrorism, al-Qa`ida, and the Takfiri ideology and other names with which they keep the people from the methodology of truth. Therefore, Muslims should not promote such lies on the mujahidin, even if the turbaned titled sheikhs of sedition and government Muftis are doing so. “Thus, the plot is clear and exposed, and will no longer deceive anyone. With that, I have become aware sometime ago of a letter containing a statement laden with ambiguity, trickery, and fraud addressed to the Somali people and written by Shaykh Abdullah Omar Nassif and Abdullah Bin Al-Mahfoudh Bin Bih. “In it, I found fallacies and confusions that require exhortation, warning and clarification in support of our brothers the mujahidin in Somalia, and in order to clarify and remove any confusion that might mislead the Somali people. The authors of the statement spoke of two suspicions, to which those they described as the rejecters of dialogue adhere. They insist on fighting, in order to clarify the ruling of the Shari`ah on the others, and of course, they clearly meant the Mujahidin Youth Movement, may God grant them victory and glorify religion through them. “We say: perdition and life are not determined by tyrannical policies, whims, desires, or by the existential minds (derogatory reference to the scholars, who issue advisory opinions in exchange for money) from which the scholars of shame and the sheikhs of Marines emerged, rather, they are determined according to the limits of God and His Almighty words. The verses of the Koran have shown that a decent and true life that God and His Messenger, prayers and peace be upon him, love is a life in the shade of the Koran and within the rule of God`s Shari`ah. Almighty God said: `In the Law of Equality, there is life to you, o ye men of understanding; that ye may restrain yourselves.` (Koranic verse, Al-Baqarah, 2:179) The Koran has also shown that a safe and quiet life that preserves the rights of the people, their blood, money, and sanctities lies within the obedience of God, to Whom belong Might and Majesty. Almighty God said: “`O ye who believe! Give your response to Allah and His Messenger, when He calleth you to that which will give you life.` (Koranic verse, Al-Anfal, 8:24) “The Almighty showed that there is true perdition when His orders, such as jihad and spending for the cause of God are abandoned, the Mighty and Most High said: `And spend of your substance in the cause of Allah, and make not your own hands contribute to (your) destruction; but do good; for Allah loveth those who do good.` (Koranic verse, al-Baqarah, 2:195) “The two authors alleged that what they called: `the suspicion of the non-implementation by Sharif`s government of Hudud (Shari`ah punishments) and the suspicion of al-Wala wal Bara (loyalty to Muslims and enmity towards the unbelievers), given the fact that Sharif`s government has ties with non-Muslim states, were behind the takfiri sedition and the legitimization of bloodshed in many parts of the Muslim world. This happens because of a lack of awareness and poor judgment. The words of the Amir of the Believers Ali, may God be pleased with him, came true when the Khawarij said: `No rule but to God,` he answered: ` word of truth that meant falsehood,` because it came in the wrong context. The manipulation of the authors in the fundamentals of the Shari`ah when describing these two great matters of suspicions, and if they truly have any ties wit (religious) science, they would not have disdained such great matters, and so in disdain and with disregard, they dared calling them suspicions. “Then in their statements, they falsified the words of Ali Bin Abi Talib, when they said that the first sedition of Al-Khawarij, who derived their reasoning from the verse aforementioned (as received) came to demand the establishment and the implementation of Hudud, and for which the mujahidin are fighting today. May God destroy these fraudulent and lying turbans, and woe to those minds. “May their mothers be bereaved of them, how dare they, was Ali disrupting the Hudud ? How dare they utter such distortion, and will this corrupt reasoning benefit them? “How will your titles of Sheikhs and Doctors benefit you, when you categorize and describe as suspicions, al-Wala wal Bara described by the Chosen Prophet, prayers and peace be upon him, as the most secure bonds of faith? The implementation of Hudud was glorified by the Legislator (God) to the degree it was said in some accounts that `Applying one of the Hudud on earth is best to people than a week worth of rain.` In another account, it was said: `Applying one of the Hudud on earth is better to the people than one month worth of rain.` “Thus, those two individuals, who feign knowledge described demanding these two great laws as suspicions and described those who demand them as lacking judgment and followers of the Khawarij ideology, what sort of science do they hold? What knowledge do they boast about? Except for their knowledge of Satan and that of Bal`am bin Ba`ura`. “The truth in the matter is that a mere reflection on their falsehood, their despicable methodology, and their expressions that do not adhere to the constants of Shari`ah suffice a man to understand the truth and the shallowness of the knowledge they convey. It is the knowledge of Rand Corporation of America, which follows in the procession of tyrants and stems from the niche of American interests. In fact, it is such that both individuals avoid the use of the word unbelievers, which the scholars of shame attempt to disguise and remove by replacing it with a lighter word when talking about the enemies of religion among the guardians of the tyrants such as non-Muslims and non-Muslim states. Could non-Muslims be other than unbelievers? However, it is wordplay to please the enemies and a defeat before their force. You hear them say: `considering that the government of Sharif has ties with non-Muslim states.` This is undoubtedly a way to demean and ridicule the words and arguments of the people of truth, to facilitate answering and manipulating them, and simply to regard them as mere suspicions. “Otherwise, would the people of truth find fault with the people falsehood and the tyrants only for establishing rapports with non-Muslim states? Moreover, would they criticize them for becoming prepared soldiers and close supporters of those infidel states, supporting them against the true Islamic project that seeks to restore the glories of the ummah, and aiding them against the mujahidin and the supporters of religion? “They said, may God shut their mouths for ever: `As for the first suspicion, i.e. the implementation of Shari`ah law in the domain of punishments, I would like to say that the material of law is expansive, and sprawling in all directions. It contains all the commands and prohibitions in various areas of righteous life and business fields that serve the individual and the society, and the domain of punishments is one of them.` This glorifying methodology is not meant to glorify Shari`ah as it is intended to look in the statement; rather it is meant intimidation and amplification to make difficult the implementation of Shari`ah. It is meant to give excuses to every ruler, who implemented any part of it, that he is within the realm of Shari`ah and its guardians, although the Almighty said in ordering the believers to follow his law: `O ye who believe! Enter into Islam whole-heartedly.` (Koranic verse, Al-Baqarah, 2:208) It said about he who adheres to some of the Shari`ah and leaves out some: `Then is it only a part of the Book that ye believe in, and do ye reject the rest? but what is the reward for those among you who behave like this but disgrace in this life?- and on the Day of Judgment they shall be consigned to the most grievous penalty. For Allah is not unmindful of what ye do. These are the people who buy the life of this world at the price of the Hereafter: their penalty shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped.` (Koranic verse, Al-Baqarah, 2:85-86) “Moreover, know that the goal of their discourse is intimidation to disrupt and make difficult the implementation of Shari`ah. Contemplate on their words after that as they say: `however, he has to meet conditions, first, provide a stable regime that people yield to, for it is one of the rules of sovereignty as it is known, and without sovereignty, it is not necessary, or rather it is not permissible. Muslims are unanimous on this matter as explained by Qurtubi,` to the end of what they mentioned of conditions (as received). “We say that this alleged consensus was flawed in transmission by those ignorant people, as it is the case with the people of innovations in their claims of consensus on their falsehood. In that, Imam Ahmad said: `He who claims consensus has lied, how he knows if the people have disagreed, this is the claim of Bishr al-Marisi (Hanafi jurist) and his followers. Hence, they speak of a consensus to disrupt the establishment of Hudud. Al-Qurtubi and others only mentioned the agreement of the imams, who issued the fatwa (advisory opinion), which those (Somali scholars mentioned in this message) have called a consensus. Thus, al-Qurtubi and others mentioned the agreement on the context of non-permissibility to encroach on the ruler, when he is in power by the establishment of Hudud by the people without his permission. While the ruler is still governing them, and he who reflects on the words of al-Qurtubi and others would understand that easily. However, this group, through their cursed standing by the side of the camp of betrayal and defeat, forbid understanding and knowledge. God said: `By no means! but on their hearts is the stain of the (ill) which they do!` (Koranic verse, Al-Mutaffifin, 83:14) “They relate from the people of knowledge without examination or scrutiny, and they think that, by piling up the opinions of scholars or by attributing consensus to them in whatever way, they would achieve the true jurisprudence, but between jurisprudence and them there is a gap that cannot be filled with seas and oceans, and how wrong they are. “In an attempt to find excuses to every tyrant, who delays and disrupts the law of God, even if he met all the conditions that they cited, they said: in case all the conditions aforementioned are met, he who does not implement the rules of Hudud, without a denial of their religious obligation, will not step out of the realm of religion (Kharij). This is agreed upon by the righteous among the people of knowledge, who relied in their interpretation on the word of the Most Exalted: `If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what Allah hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.` (Koranic verse, Al-Ma`idah, 5:44) This is infidelity besides infidelity, and a debauchery besides debauchery as said by Ibn Abbas and Hudhayfah, may God be pleased with them, and that is not regarded as stepping out of the realm of religion. Hence, it is not permissible to fight people on account of that argument.` “This is a call from those two monks to disrupt the Hudud and an attempt to rationalize and downplay the crime of those who do, and to protect them, so that, they are not of infidelity and cannot be fought if they prevent implementing them, in both case, whether they meet the conditions or not. Then, they do not feel shame to relate falsely from the righteous scholars and pretend that this clear falsehood and ugly untruth is the doctrine of the righteous scholars. Moreover, they involved the companions, Ibn Abbas and Hudhayfah in their manipulations, what effrontery is greater than this? When did Ibn Abbas and Hudhayfah say that disrupting all Hudud, by those who meet the conditions or not, is an infidelity besides infidelity, a debauchery besides debauchery, and an injustice besides injustice! “When were the Hudud disrupted in the time of the companions in such an ugly and heinous manner as it is the case in our time, or does the task of these monks constitute fixing every mistake, and fault and finding excuses and unwarranted suspicions to disrupt Shari`ah , even through deception, fraud, lies and distortion. “As for their saying `he who does not implement the rule of Hudud without denying their religious obligation has not stepped out of the realm of religion as it was agreed upon by the righteous among the people of knowledge,` to come out with their ridicule conclusion which makes falsely fighting such individuals non-permissible. “Sufficient is the response relayed by Imam Muhammad Bin Abd Al-Wahab, may God rest his soul, reported by the Shaykh of Islam Bin Taymiyah, may God rest his soul, in the last part of his discourse on the infidelity of those who forbid giving almsgiving: `The companions did not say, you confess it is obligatory or you deny it, this is not the way of the companions under any circumstances.`. Rather, Al-Siddiq (companion Abu Bakr al-Siddiq) said to Omar (companion Omar Bin al-Khattab), may God be pleased with them both: `By God, if they forbid me in kindness from giving (almsgiving) to the Messenger of God, prayers and peace be upon him, I would fight them for forbidding it.` Hence, he made disallowing almsgiving and not its rejection a reason to fight. It was recounted that groups recognized almsgiving to be an obligation, however they refused to give it, and the Caliphs acted towards them in the same manner, by killing their fighters, enslaving their children, confiscating their properties, declaring them all their to be in hellfire, and calling them apostates. “This is the discourse of the true and righteous scholars, the righteous not the fraudulent ones, and so if this is the case with he who disrupts one divine precept, what with he who disrupts all the Hudud. “Recalling the opinions and words of the righteous scholars in fighting those who disrupt the religious laws and refuse to implement them, might take a long time. However, it is sufficient for us that the Muslims in Somalia and elsewhere know that the matter is being argued and disguised by these two monks, who are attempting to make invalid what is received the consensus of the righteous scholars of the ummah. This was mentioned by the Shaykh of Islam Bin Taymiyah, may God rest his soul, in Al-Fatawa, he said: “the scholars of the ummah have agreed that any group abstains from any of the clear and recurrent laws of Islam, ought to be fought until religion is all for God. Moreover, a group may abstain from some of the obligatory prayers, fasting, and pilgrimage. It may not be committed to avoid bloodshed, alcohol, gambling, adultery, and incest. It may avoid jihad against the infidels, impose taxes on the people of the Scripture, or any other religious obligation and its sanctities, in which there is no excuse for he who denies or leaves them, making he who denies their obligation accused of disbelief. Then, this group ought to be fought even if it recognizes them, and in that, I do not know of a disagreement among scholars about it.` “This is the true consensus, on which the light of God is shed and His proof, not the consensus of the scholars of evil and the sheikhs of Kings. As for the claim of these two monks on ruling, with other than what was revealed by God in its current form, as not being infidelity, that would make one step out of the realm of religion, and does not require to be fought. It is the claim of the government lackeys and the shoes of tyrants who argue about their outright, multifaceted, and diversified infidelity in all the land. We have shown in another study in our writings that the infidelity of those tyrants can be demonstrated in various fields. It is not limited to the fields of ruling, and we have responded to the suspicions of the adepts of al-Tajahum and al-Irja about allowing a rule with other than what was revealed by God, in their reasoning based on the words of Bin Al-Abbas. We have demonstrated the vast difference between the outright infidel and polytheist practices of the rulers in the field of governance and religious legislation today. The reason for the advent of such saying that was attributed to Bin al-Abbas in his debate on the Khawarij, who charged the imams of Muslim that rule with the laws of God with disbelief. Moreover, all are detailed in their right place in our published writings and in which we have crushed the suspicions of those people and dispersed their unity. This was long ago, and there is no need for repetition. He who wants to know about them ought to read them in their right place. “Those two monks have exposed their Irja` and Tajahum doctrine through their saying as follows: `disbelief is in the heart and faith.` This is the doctrine of Irja` and Tajahum, which constrains disbelief in the innermost convictions and do not charge with disbelief based on outward acts and words. This is not the doctrine of the Sunnis, to which the two monks and the worshippers of palaces pretend to belong to in falsehood and lying, just as did the worshippers of graves that pretend to belong to it in falsehood and lying. Therefore, a Muslim should not be deceived by the falsehood of those people for the simple fact that they came up with claims void of evidence, for the Almighty said: `Say: `Produce your proof if ye are truthful.` (Koranic verse, Al-Baqarah, 2:111) “And if claims that are not built up on evidence...then their respective owners are only claimers. (A poetic verse) “If they claim `that disbelief is in the heart and faith` only, no rebellious demon will commit disbelief on the face of this earth, for what is the way to judge innermost matters. Therefore, we were ordered to judge the outward appearance and on that were based the provisions of the religious Shari`ah in this world. Then, the charge of disbelief can only be made on the ground of an outward apparent word or act as evidenced by the Shari`ah and as determined by the righteous scholars. If we were told to prospect and explore the hearts of people, and we cannot do that; and if the claim of these two monks is right, then for what purpose was the punishment of apostasy ordained then? Moreover, what is the way to implement it, since apostasy cannot be ruled upon through the secrets that lie within a heart as they claim? “There is so much in the Book of God and in the Sunnah of His Prophet, prayers and peace be upon him, contradict this suspicion? Of charging people with disbelief who showed their disbelief with words, and hence became disbelievers after they accepted Islam and God declared them disbelievers. Although some of them swore and employed a similar excuse to that of the two monks that they were not serious about it, or did not hold a belief in it as if to say: `we just rushed into it and were fooling around. The people, who practiced polytheism with their actions, God declared them disbelievers and scorned their actions while they thought they were doing what was right, and others pretended they only meant no more than goodwill and conciliation. “All this is well known in the words of God and the words of His Messenger, prayers and peace be upon him, in the words of the divine scholars, and in the words of the righteous Imams. However, those monks turn their backs on them, and disguise their words and suspicions with shows of alleged examinations to deceive the public. Moreover, the statement added: `As for the second suspicion, it is al-Wala wal Bara and it is a principle used in the wrong place and wrong context, for the people that were charged with disbelief base on unfounded outward words or acts, and interpretations hard to comprehend. There are types and degrees of Wala (loyalty) and the type that makes one steps out of the realm of religion is loyalty in creed.` Contemplate how they turned one of the most secured bonds of faith into mere suspicion, and contemplate how they narrowed down disbelief in the domain of creed, although the loyalty that constitutes disbelief, as it was explained by the people of knowledge, is loyalty, with weapons and the tongue, to the enemies of the Shari`ah. “Then, they revealed their goal and objective to downplay the issue of al-Wala wal Bara by calling it a suspicion. In kindness, they said: `It was not permissible to adhere to the suspicion of al-Wala wal Bara to fight the African troops that came to help the country upon a regional and local resolution of the government of Shaykh Sharif.`. Contemplate how they shuffle the cards and laugh at the people, according to their claim, the African troops `came to help the country` not to assist Sharif`s pro-American government and to help establish it. Thus, it is not permissible to fight them in any case. “They argued that it was not permissible to fight them on the grounds that they came by a decision of Shaykh Sheriff as if he was the imam of the believers or the imam of Muslims. In their reasoning, they relied on the Hadith that says: `the lowliest of them (among Muslims) can promise protection on their behalf,` (note: the whole hadith reads: `the blood of the believers is equal, the lowliest of them can promise protection on their behalf, and they are all united against others. Verily, a believer is not to be killed for (killing) an unbeliever, and he who has an agreement (with Muslims) shall not be killed while the agreement is still in force.`) The Hadith made the Muslims equal, and it did not mix Muslims with disbelievers, or the believers with the criminals! Sharif and his government are not among the lowliest among Muslims, even less the highest in status, to employ such Hadith in their benefit. However, as it is said, the rotting of the branches is the inevitable result of the rotting of roots, and because of the fact that those people do not differentiate between Muslims and criminals, they employed what was meant on Muslim for the benefit of criminals. They made an outright disbelief and a blatant polytheism and disbelief besides disbelief, and they called the greatest religious obligations of Islam and most solid bounds of faith suspicions. They framed the demands to implement them part of the ideology of Khawarij and Takfiris. They strayed and led others to stray. That is why they later mentioned a long incoherent talk on their conception of a state they aspire and seek to set up. According to them, it would be a state that unites Muslims with criminals. A state that traets the mujahidin in the same manner as the so-called the generals of the great Somalia. They seek to involve all in one rule, which would satisfy all th”Beware Muslims from the lies of those priests and monks. “Did anyone other than the kings, priests, and monks of evil corrupt religion? (A poetic verse) “Know that the foundation of the religion of Islam and its base are two matters, first, the command to worship God alone with no partner, loyalty to those who do so and charge with disbelief those who leave it. Second, warning against worshipping other deities along with God, advising emphatically against that and charging with infidelity he who encourage it. “This is the monotheism heralded by all the Messengers, may God`s prayers and peace be upon them all, and it is the meaning of `there is no God but God.` God Almighty said: `There is for you an excellent example (to follow) in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people: `We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah. We have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you, enmity and hatred for ever, unless ye believe in Allah and Him alone` (Koranic verse, al-Mumtahinah, 60:4) “The erudite scholar Ibn al-Qayyim said: `When God forbade the believers to champion the infidels, he required them to be hostile to them, to keep their distance from them, and to manifest aggression against them in every situation.` (Bada`I al-Fawa`id, 69/3) “Shaykh Hamad Bin Atiq, may the mercy of God be upon him, said in his book ` The Path for Escape and Survival ` and going along the lines of `We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship besides Allah. We have rejected you.` (Koranic verse, Al-Mumtahinah, 60:4) What a splendid wit! God has given precedence to distancing oneself from the polytheists, who worship other than God over keeping clear from the idols, which are worshipped without God. The former is more important than the latter, because, if a man keeps clear from idols and does not turn his back on those who worship them, he would not feel obligated to go against them, but if he distances himself from the polytheists, he will be required to distance himself from their idols. This is mentioned in God`s words: `And I will turn away from you (all) and from those whom ye invoke besides Allah.` (Koranic verse, Maryam, 19:48) Thus, God gave precedence to distancing oneself from them (polytheists) over distancing oneself from the idols, whom they worship besides God. This is mentioned in His words: `When he had turned away from them and from those whom they worshipped besides Allah,” (Koranic verse, Maryam 19:49) and His words “Hence, now that you have withdrawn from them and from all that they worship instead of God.` (Koranic verse, Al-Kahf, 18:16) Now enjoy this wit, for it opened a door to you to antagonize the enemies of God. Therefore, many people do not fall in the trap of polytheism, but they do not antagonize its people, thus they are not Muslims for they have left the religion of all Messengers. “Shaykh Abd Al-Latif Bin Abd al-Rahman said in his book ` Al-Durar al-Suniyah `: `A man might escape polytheism and love monotheism. However, a defect can taint him if he does not distance himself from the people of polytheism, and if he leaves the side and refrains from supporting the people of monotheism. Then, he will become a follower of his whims, and he will join the people of polytheism, who will destroy his religion and everything he has built so far. Leaving behind the precepts of monotheism, without which the faith he chose will no longer be upright, he will not love or hate God, and he will not be hostile or champion He Who created him, and all that take away from the testimony of `there is no god but God.` (Juz` Al-Jihad, page 681) “Shaykh Muhammad Bin Abd Al-Wahab, may God rest his soul, said: `It is essential for a Muslim to announce that he is part of the community of believers. Thus, he will strengthen it and it will be strengthened by him, so as to frighten the tyrants, who will not achieve the purpose of their enmity until it is announced to them that he (the Muslim) belongs to the group that fights them.` (Majmu`at al-Tawhid ) “Accordingly, I advise my Muslim brothers in Somalia and elsewhere to announce their support for the Mujahidin Youth Movement, who raised the banner of monotheism, to provide them with all kinds of support and assistance, to join their ranks, and not to let down their banner or desert their jihad. The people have witnessed their honesty, purity of hands, and integrity of rule in each province they conquered. Moreover, I advise them not be deceived by the ambiguities of the phony scholars, who confuse the truth with falsehood and confuse the path to Paradise with the path to Hellfire. “Do not be deceived by the Government of the imposter Sharif, who allied with the Americans, and contracted a deal with the shake of a hand, opened his arms to them, and became an agent that cares for their interests in Somalia, like his fellow collaborator rulers in other Muslim countries today. Therefore, I warn you from supporting the government of the imposter, or engage in his government`s police and military forces, be recruited as his supporter, or help his army, for he who champions an infidel is a disbeliever, God Almighty said: `And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them.` (Koranic verse, Al-Ma`idah, 5:51) He who champions the enemies of the Shari`ah and the guardians of America over the Muslims and the mujahidin would have disbelieved in God the Great as evidenced by the righteous scholars. “I also advise my brothers the mujahidin to remain steadfast under the banner of monotheism, to adhere to its true methodology, and to avoid being affected by the treacherous violators. Thus, God willing, you become part of the victorious and apparent sect that the Prophet, prayers and peace be upon him, had informed it will fight for the cause of God, will not be affected by those who fail it or contradict it, and will remain fighting until they hear the order of God. “I warn you as of now against allying with anyone who deviates from the methodology of monotheism, among those who lay in wait to reap the fruit of your jihad. Those who like to climb onto the chairs of governance on the remains of martyrs and on the skulls of heroes, who sacrificed their lives, offered their souls to raise the banner of monotheism and to establish the rule of God on earth. By God, this is a great trust, give it all your care, and protect it with your hearts, do not forsake any of it, and do not let any claimer share its fruit with you. “O Lord, Champion your servants the mujahidin in Somalia. O Lord, guide their aim, unite their word, bring them together, empower them on the earth, crush their enemy, and turn his cunning against him. O Lord, conclude a good outcome for our Muslim brothers in Somalia, with which bring pride to your people and humiliate your enemies. Now at MIT, Doshi continues his analysis of a century’s worth of influenza mortality data and government manipulation of influenza data, such as the annual figure of 36,000 influenza deaths we hear and read repeatedly.[1] Although this magical number was for all practical purposes alchemically conjured up via mathematical modeling back in 2003, it continues to be the most holy number in the CDC’s PR vocabulary every flu season. Doshi draws the conclusion, published in the American Journal of Public Health, that commercial interests are playing the role of science in both industry and government.[2]

Deconstruction of the CDC’s cherry-picked science and a growing anti-vaccination community are just some of the obstacles health authorities face. Therefore, no public relations strategy can have a solid multimedia punch on American citizens without opinion leaders serving as the gnomes for the vaccine complex and our heavily invested government health agencies, which are about to be buried in millions of purchased vaccine vials eager for distribution. This effort requires shock troopers, such as the pro-vaccine prophet Dr. Paul Offit, the creator of the rotavirus vaccine and a staunch critic against any scientist who discovers an association between vaccines and severe neurological disorders. Dr. Offit is on record for an audacious comment that children can tolerate 100,000 vaccinations (yes, you read that number correctly).[3]

However, during this particular flu season, government health officials’ may have a more difficult time convincing Americans to be vaccinated for swine flu if recent polls are reliable indicators. The latest Consumers Union poll released on September 30 shows almost two-thirds of parents will withhold vaccinating their children; fifty percent of respondents’ rationale is that the vaccine has not been tested thoroughly for safety.[4] A poll of pregnant mothers conducted by the internet parent support group Mumsnet.com indicates women are turning more suspicious about the flu vaccine’s true efficacy and safety. The survey of 1500 respondents found only 6 percent of pregnant women “definitely” taking the shot, while 48 percent said they “definitely” wouldn’t. A parallel poll revealed only 5 percent would definitely vaccinate their children.[5] A more recent San Francisco Chronicle survey finds 54 percent saying the H1N1 flu is nothing to be worried about.[6]

A separate study conducted by Harvard’s School of Public Health showed that among the 41 percent who would not get the shot, 44 percent of parents are uncertain they would allow their children to receive it. Aside from many who expressed a fear of the vaccine’s side effects, the poll found 31 percent expressing a distrust in our public health officials providing accurate information on vaccine safety.[7] Therefore, expect an aggressive government public relations campaign during the coming weeks and even months, while our tax dollars are spent on 250 million shots that independent epidemiological evidence is showing may be ineffective at best, and dangerous at worst.

European polls indicate that our neighbors on the other side of the great pond are less nervous about the H1N1 strain’s severity and far more suspicious towards health officials’ rationale for hyping dire warnings of swine flu’s dangers. In France, Le Figaro conducted a poll of 12,050 people showing 69 percent will refuse the vaccination. In a separate French survey, one third of 4,752 doctors, nurses and healthcare workers surveyed would not be inoculated.[8] Twenty-nine percent of Germans surveyed said they would refuse it “under any circumstance” and an additional 33 percent would likely refuse it. In the region of Bavaria and Baden Wurttemburg, only 10 percent of those polled said they would submit their arms to injection. In the UK, a couple polls reported in the Daily Mail last August, showed half of family physicians and a third of UK nurses do not want the swine flu vaccination. Seventy-one percent do not believe the vaccine has been tested enough for safety and the swine flu is much milder than health authorities are saying.

During the course of the CDC’s media war to push forward the vaccine industry’s greed for profit, science and reflective caution are being sacrificed. An important peer-reviewed study appearing in the June 2009 issue of Toxicological and Environmental Chemistry shows a causal relationship between the amounts of ethylmercury (thimerosal) found in inoculations for infants, when administered to monkeys, and cellular toxicity resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired oxidative reduction activity and degeneration and death in neuronal and fetal cells.[9] These are all indicative signs found in some ASD. But health officials prefer to ignore such results. For the future health of American children, the study’s findings arrive at a bad time when a recent Harvard study now reports autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) has risen to 1 in 91 people compared to the earlier 1 in 150 estimate. But since the study was sponsored by the CDC, the press release makes no indication that just maybe the over-vaccination of children with dozens of injections by the age of 5 years might be a causal factor behind this national epidemic of ASD and other neurological disorders.

During the course of interviewing many parents of autistic children for our documentaries Vaccine Nation and Autism: Made in the USA, the personal stories we filmed repeatedly were that of a once perfectly healthy and joyful child who, shortly after a vaccination or a series of injections, simply vanished from normality. However, national health policy today seems to have almost legislated by divine decree that there is no relationship between vaccine ingredients and autism. Besides, further independent research and first-hand personal stories would only interfere with the propaganda machine and the CDC’s “Seven Step Recipe for Generating Interest In, and Demand for, Flu Vaccination.”

Peter Doshi first brought public attention to the CDC’s PR influenza strategy known as the Seven Step Recipe. Glen Nowak, now the Director of the CDC’s Media Relations, outlined a concise public relations template while serving as the communications spokesperson for the National Immunization Program. Speaking at the 2004 National Influenza Vaccine Summit, he presented the CDC’s seven steps. After a careful review of Nowak’s Powerpoint presentation we discover a very detailed and concerted PR and multimedia campaign that includes the following (quotes are from CDC’s materials):

• To encourage the belief that influenza infection can “occur among people for whom influenza is not generally perceived to cause serious complications (e.g., children, healthy adults, healthy seniors).” In other words, promote flu vaccination to those who don’t really need it.
• In order to “foster the demand for flu vaccinations” the CDC should target “medical experts and public health authorities publicly (e.g., via media) [to] state concern and alarm (and predict dire outcomes)—and urge influenza vaccination.”
• By focusing on the message of dire health threats and human casualties upon those who don’t really need to be vaccinated, the CDC will reach its milestone of “framing of the flu season in terms that motivate behavior (e.g., as “very severe,” “more severe than last or past years,” “deadly”).”
• Throughout the flu season, the campaign would continue issuing reports “from health officials and media” to emphasize that “influenza is causing severe illness and/or affecting lots of people—helping foster the perception that many people are susceptible to a bad case of influenza.”
• Of course, no marketing strategy is thorough without images. Ergo another ingredient in the recipe is to use “visible/tangible examples of the seriousness of the illness (e.g., pictures of children, families of those affected coming forward) and people getting vaccinated (the first to motivate, the latter to reinforce).”

The CDC’s “key points” indicate we are now in that critical timeframe for the CDC to distribute materials to “a variety of partners.” This includes aggressively disseminating all medical reports, studies and PR spins to the soporific media and corporate-funded medical associations to support the government’s mass vaccination efforts. Come November, we will begin to see reports on “pediatric deaths” due to influenza—although Dr. Martin Meltzer, a CDC expert in health economics, has stated “almost nobody dies of the flu” and “deaths [are] associated with flu, but not necessarily caused by flu.”[10] Apparently, the folks over in the various CDC departments and our different federal health agencies don’t communicate with each other very well.

So why should our tax dollars go towards fabricating and/or ignoring science in order to vaccinate Americans? Nowak publicly stated the CDC’s reasons on National Public Radio, “… the manufacturers were telling us that they weren’t receiving a lot of orders for vaccine for use in November or even December … It really did look like we [CDC] needed to do something to encourage people to get a flu shot.[11]

At this moment, we are witnessing a steady flow press releases and articles in the media to convert Americans to the wisdom of national health vaccination policy. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has issued preliminary positive results from an uncompleted clinical trial testing the H1N1 vaccine on children and young people between 6 months and 17 years of age. The fact that the entire study only enrolled 70 individuals covering this age range should alone raise red flags about any reliable conclusions after the study is completed. Moreover, the study is specifically designed for measuring the necessary immune response to protect youth from the swine flu. It is not a safety study. We usually expect that sound scientific ethics demand clinical trials to be reported after a final analysis of research data, however, the CDC’s Seven Step Recipe is not concerned with scientific facts, or rigorous research protocol. It is simply part of the PR game plan to get people vaccinated and to do it fast.

Donald McNeil, a shill for the vaccine complex writing for the New York Times has printed two recent articles aligned with CDC propaganda. He quotes Dr. Jay Butler, chief of the swine flu vaccine task force at the CDC in order to relieve fears about flu vaccine adverse effects, especially to pregnant women. Dr. Butler said, “There are about 2,400 miscarriages a day in the US. You’ll see things that would have happened anyway. But the vaccine doesn’t cause miscarriages. It also doesn’t cause auto accidents, but they happen.”[12] I hope that is reassuring to all those expectant mothers across the country, especially since none of the approved H1N1 vaccines have undergone rigorous clinical safety trials on pregnant women or the potential adverse effects of mercury-laced vaccines and other ingredients, such as spermacide, detergent and cosmetics, on the developing fetus. Germany on the other hand announced it is now taking preventative measures. Agreeing that the verdict on ethylmercury and squalene safety for children is unsettled, Germany is requiring the vaccine industry to return to their plants and provide adjuvant- and mercury preservative-free vaccine lots.

McNeil’s more recent article in October 7th’s New York Times should be read alongside the Seven Step Recipe for a clear visual unfolding of the CDC’s PR strategy in action. McNeil downplays the growing medical realization that the swine flu is in all likelihood much milder than seasonal flu in order to convince us to roll up our sleeves. Following the CDC script, we see the picture of little 3 year old Clayton being vaccinated, while McNeill compares the swine flu death of an 18 year old Tibetan woman in China with a story of joyful young Brandon and his 9 year old sister gleefully surrendering their nostrils for a blast of live-attenuated H1N1 virus.[13]

While finalizing this article, Peter Doshi replied to an email and drew attention to an event in his Harper’s article that should force us to pause before rolling up our sleeves. Briefly, the 2004 flu season was a debacle for the vaccine complex and federal health officials after 50 million doses of flu vaccine promised by Chiron Corporation were made unavailable, therefore, putting the health industry into a panic. In order to lessen the frenzy previously stirred by its public fear tactics, the CDC downgraded the flu’s urgency to “an annoying illness”, and “stressed the protective benefits of regular hand washing.”[14]

Now that is a national policy I can support. I would much prefer the CDC funding Americans’ soap bills to ward off an uncertain swine flu pandemic rather than using taxes for unsubstantiated threats from the CDC’s national vaccine marketing campaign.

Obama – has been rewarded for his stoic service to imperial bloodletting with the Nobel Peace Prize. The man who gallantly promised “change” from the Bush regime’s illegal wars and a return to diplomacy over belligerency in dealing with Iran, has perpetuated the illegal wars in Afghanistan and Iraq while expanding another in Pakistan and becoming belligerent towards Iran. How in anyone’s mind can such behavior constitute a move towards peace? Obama has done nothing to dismantle the sprawling network of well over 700 U.S. military bases all over the world. Instead of coming to an understanding with Iran over their nuclear power program, Obama gleefully read from his trusty teleprompter and crafted the hoax that the Iranian nuclear facility at Qom was an evil secret that the Iranians had kept hidden from America as part of a clandestine agenda to build nuclear weapons. In reality, Iran had followed precisely the guidelines set out by the IAEA on when to report the facility and the U.S. had known about it for several years anyway. Obama’s slick propaganda in expressing his shock at the “discovery” of the plant was worthy of an Oscar but not a Nobel Peace Prize, since the scam has increased the likelihood of sanctions on Iran that will only accelerate the path to war. By dutifully playing his part in this contrived hoax, Obama was mimicking the tactics of how George W. Bush sold the attack on Iraq. As Paul Craig Roberts wrote, “By accusing Iran of having a secret “nuclear weapons program” and demanding that Iran “come clean” about the nonexistent program, adding that he does not rule out a military attack on Iran, Obama mimics the discredited Bush regime’s use of nonexistent Iraqi “weapons of mass destruction” to set up Iraq for invasion.” The fact that Obama launched himself into the role of war hawk in an effort to propagandize for belligerency towards Iran completely discredits the claim by Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland that Obama “Has been a key person for important initiatives in the U.N. for nuclear disarmament and to set a completely new agenda for the Muslim world and East-West relations.” A d v e r t i s e m e n t Obama’s acting skills in front of a teleprompter and his slick rhetoric about peace and diplomacy may look good on the surface, but the reality of what he has actually done to further the PNAC agenda for endless war underlines why the award of the Peace Prize is a sick joke. If Obama intended to bring peace to the world, then why were his early appointments mostly neo-liberal war hawks who have a history of backing military adventurism? If Obama is such a huge peacenik, then why has he sent 21,000 more troops to Afghanistan already, with tens of thousands more at least on the way? If Obama plans to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq and bring peace to the region, then why has he gone back on his promise and ensured that tens of thousands of U.S. troops will remain in the country? If Obama is so deserving of being recognized for his efforts towards peace, then why has he intensified the Bush-era missile drone attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan that have killed and injured countless innocent civilians? If Obama is so interested in promoting peace, then why does he protect war criminals who have violated the Geneva Conventions from prosecution? Beyond the meaningless platitudes served up by his fellow elitist snobs, the true hilarity of Obama receiving the prize was illustrated by just a couple of individuals who the corporate media dared to quote. Issam al-Khazraji, a day laborer in Baghdad, told Reuters: “He doesn’t deserve this prize. All these problems — Iraq, Afghanistan — have not been solved…The man of ‘change’ hasn’t changed anything yet.” “Liaqat Baluch, a senior leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, a conservative religious party in Pakistan, called the award an embarrassing “joke.” “By implementing his war continuation plan, Obama will complete the work of Bush and his militarist clique,” writes author Chris Floyd, and in doing so send, “an apparently endless stream of American troops to die — and, in even greater numbers, to kill — in a criminal action that has helped bankrupt our own country while sending waves of violent instability and extremism around the world. It will further enfilth a cesspool of corruption and war profiteering that has already reached staggering, world-historical proportions.” Floyd encapsulates perfectly why Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize award is a disgusting farce, an insult to those who really are fighting for peace in the world, and just another reminder that the Nobel Peace Prize represents little more than a gaggle of back-slapping elitists who bestow awards upon each other so that they can pose as global saviors to the public when in reality they are mostly a bunch of crooks, con-artists and deceivers.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has seen fit to award a peace prize to a man less than a year into elected presidential office in the United States. So what are Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize credentials?

Obama is a man who has yet to shut down a global gulag, who has yet to end the warring in Iraq, who has yet to oversee the return of the elected president of Haiti (deposed by US, Canadian, and French forces), who stands unflinching on the coup d’etat in Honduras, who runs cover for Israeli massacres of Palestinians and Israeli violations of the Geneva Conventions (i.e., supporting war crimes), who seeks to proliferate military bases in Columbia, who has ramped up the killing in Afghanistan, and who has overseen the spillover of war into Pakistan.

Is this the criteria that is deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize?

The Norwegian Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said, "Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future."

So Nobel Prizes are being handed out for offering hope? Is this an effort to prod Obama along the road toward a peace-making presidency?

Didn’t Norway reward Yitzhak Shamir, Shimon Peres, and Yasser Arafat Nobel Peace Prizes for giving the hope of peace in historical Palestine? Since then Israel has carried out many slaughters of the indigenous Palestinians. And yes, Palestinians have resisted with violence — sometimes lethal.

Wasn’t US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger co-awarded a 1973 Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating a cease-fire in the US war on Vietnam? Hope was hung around a ceasefire destined to collapse. At least Vietnam’s Le Duc Tho had the integrity to refuse a prize where peace was based on the tokenism of hope.

There are many examples that contradict the notion that Nobel Prizes would spur the US nation toward peace. Yet the leaders of the most warring nation on the planet continue to be rewarded with peace prizes. It defies rationality.

Did Obama offer a mea culpa for US atrocities?

Did Obama seek justice for the perpetrators behind the killing of an estimated 1.3 million Iraqis based upon a concocted casus belli?

To his credit, Obama did something most unusual in acknowledging that the US was behind the 1953 coup d’etat in Iran? Did he offer an apology? Did he offer compensation?

Hoping for peace in a state based on the genocide, dispossession, and marginalization of its Original Peoples, a state whose economy was largely built through slavery, a state built through the expansionism of war with its neighbors, a state built through dominating its hemisphere through self-declared destiny, despite never managing the gumption to apologize for these past grave crimes seems rather dubious.

There are plenty of states deserving of censure. However, when one state with a long history of violence stands supremely powerful and claims itself to be a beacon onto all other states, that is where transformation must first occur in a world whose people long for a just peace.

That will require more than wishful thinking. It will require the audacity to mobilize the masses to a revolution for peace.

Obama's Nobel Peace Prize: WHAT A HORRIBLE JOKE
Glenn Greenwald October 9, 2009 (updated below) When I saw this morning's top New York Times headline -- "Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize" -- I had the same immediate reaction which I'm certain many others had: this was some kind of bizarre Onion gag that got accidentally transposed onto the wrong website, that it was just some sort of strange joke someone was playing. Upon further reflection, that isn't all that far from the reaction I still have. And I say that despite my belief that -- as critical as I've been of the Obama presidency regarding civil liberties and Terrorism -- foreign affairs is actually one area where he's shown genuine potential for some constructive "change" and has, on occasion, merited real praise for taking steps in the general "peace" direction which this Prize is meant to honor. Obama has changed the tone America uses to speak to the world generally and the Muslim world specifically. His speech in Cairo, his first-week interview on al-Arabiya, and the extraordinarily conciliatory holiday video he sent to Iran are all substantial illustrations of that. His willingness to sit down and negotiate with Iran -- rather than threaten and berate them -- has already produced tangible results. He has at least preliminarily broken from Bush's full-scale subservience to Israel and has applied steadfast pressure on the Israelis to cease settlement activities, even though it's subjected him to the sorts of domestic political risks and vicious smears that have made prior Presidents afraid to do so. His decision to use his first full day in office to issue Executive Orders to close Guantanamo, ostensibly ban torture, and bar CIA black sites was an important symbol offered to the world (even though it's been followed by actions that make those commitments little more than empty symbols). He refused to reflexively support the right-wing, civil-liberty-crushing coup leaders in Honduras merely because they were "pro-American" and "anti-Chavez," thus siding with the vast bulk of Latin America's governments -- a move George Bush, or John McCain, never would have made. And as a result of all of that, the U.S. -- in a worldwide survey released just this week -- rose from seventh to first on the list of "most admired countries." All that said, these changes are completely preliminary, which is to be expected given that he's only been in office nine months. For that reason, while Obama's popularity has surged in Western Europe, the changes in the Muslim world in terms of how the U.S. is perceived have been small to nonexistent. As Der Spiegel put it in the wake of a worldwide survey in July: "while Europe's ardor for Obama appears fervent, he has actually made little progress in the regions where the US faces its biggest foreign policy problems." People who live in regions that have long been devastated by American weaponry don't have the luxury of being dazzled by pretty words and speeches. They apparently -- and rationally -- won't believe that America will actually change from a war-making nation into a peace-making one until there are tangible signs that this is happening. It's because that has so plainly not yet occurred that the Nobel Committee has made a mockery out of their own award. But far more important than the lack of actual accomplishments are some of the policies over which Obama has presided that are the very opposite of peace. Already this year, he not only escalated the American war in Afghanistan, but has ordered air raids that have produced things like this: That was from a May airstrike in which over 100 Afghan civilians were killed by American jets -- one of many similar incidents this year, including one only a week ago that killed 9 Afghan civilians. How can someone responsible for that, and who has only escalated that war, possibly be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in the very same year that he did that? Does that picture above look like the work of a Nobel Peace laureate? Does this, from the May airstrike? Beyond Afghanistan, Obama continues to preside over another war -- in Iraq: remember that? -- where no meaningful withdrawal has occurred. He uttered not a peep of opposition to the Israeli massacre of Gazan civilians at the beginning of this year (using American weapons), one which a U.N. investigator just found constituted war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity. The changed tone to Iran notwithstanding, his administration frequently emphasizes that it is preserving the option to bomb that country, too -- which could be a third war against a Muslim country fought simultaneously under his watch. He's worked tirelessly to protect his country not only from accountability -- but also transparency -- for the last eight years of war crimes, almost certainly violating America's treaty obligations in the process. And he is currently presiding over an expansion of the legal black hole at Bagram while aggressively demanding the right to abduct people from around the world, ship them there, and then imprison them indefinitely with no rights of any kind. It's certainly true that Obama inherited, not started, these conflicts. And it's possible that he could bring about their end, along with an overall change in how America interacts with the world in terms of actions, not just words. If he does that, he would deserve immense credit -- perhaps even a Nobel Peace Prize. But he hasn't done any of that. And it's at least as possible that he'll do the opposite: that he'll continue to escalate the 8-year occupation of Afghanistan, preside over more conflict in Iraq, end up in a dangerous confrontation with Iran, and continue to preserve many of the core Bush/Cheney Terrorism policies that created such a stain on America's image and character around the world. Through no fault of his own, Obama presides over a massive war-making state that spends on its military close to what the rest of the world spends combined. The U.S. accounts for almost 70% of worldwide arms sales. We're currently occupying and waging wars in two separate Muslim countries and making clear we reserve the "right" to attack a third. Someone who made meaningful changes to those realities would truly be a man of peace. It's unreasonable to expect that Obama would magically transform all of this in nine months, and he certainly hasn't. Instead, he presides over it and is continuing much of it. One can reasonably debate how much blame he merits for all of that, but there are simply no meaningful "peace" accomplishment in his record -- at least not yet -- and there's plenty of the opposite. That's what makes this Prize so painfully and self-evidently ludicrous. UPDATE: Remember how, during the Bush years, the GOP would disgustingly try to equate liberals with Terrorists by pointing out that they happened to have the same view on a particular matter (The Left opposes the war in Iraq, just like Al Qaeda and Hezbollah do! or bin Laden's criticisms of Bush sound just like Michael Moore's! ). It looks like the Democratic Party has learned and adopted that tactic perfectly ("'The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists - the Taliban and Hamas this morning - in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,' DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse told POLITICO"; Republicans are "put[ting] politics above patriotism," he added). Apparently, according to the DNC, if you criticize this Prize, then you're an unpatriotic America-hater -- just like the Terrorists, because they're also criticizing the award. Karl Rove should be proud. Maybe the DNC should also send out Joe Lieberman's 2005 warning that "in matters of war we undermine Presidential credibility at our nation’s peril." Hamas also thinks that Israeli settlements should be frozen -- a position Obama shares. So, by the DNC's Rovian reasoning, doesn't this mean that Obama "has thrown in his lot with the terrorists"?

Depraved, Obscene Absurdities by Arthur Silber
October 9, 2009 Almost no one will acknowledge the single, fundamental truth about Barack Obama, the truth of greatest and most terrifying consequence: Barack Obama is a war criminal. Many facts overwhelmingly and conclusively compel this judgment, and no other. Not because I say so, but because an honest application of the relevant language of international law, as well as of the Nuremberg Principles, necessitates the conclusion. Read that earlier post. Try, for pity's sake, try to understand it. It's not complicated. Yet, as I've discussed in numerous essays, almost all Americans and much of the world (at least, the elite establishment of the world, i.e., the ruling class) are engaged in a monumental exercise of denial and avoidance. This damnable business has gone on for centuries, to be sure, but it has gathered terrible force in the last several decades. Today, the lethal force of this worldwide denial could easily lead to destruction on a scale never seen, not even in the last World War. History, facts, unimaginable brutality, torture, widescale murder, bodies ripped apart, guts spilling out of blood-drenched bodies, arms, legs and heads sundered and tossed aside to be gnawed on by starving animals, souls destroyed, never again to experience joy or happiness for even a moment -- all of this is minimized, ignored, denied, even mocked as the perpetrators of this immense evil and those who enable and support them (which is most people) claim that those who identify the truth are "exaggerating." "Oh, don't be such a doomsayer. Don't be so gloomy and dire. It's not that bad!" These denials are easily known to be lies: an honest observer need only open his eyes, look and see. This is precisely what the great majority of people will never do. As only two examples out of hundreds here: read this, and then this from yesterday, which concerns a crucial instance of cultural denial: the unrecognized and unspeakable cruelty visited by most adults on children. That is where the possibility of future cruelty and barbarism is implanted. The kind of brutality and monstrous criminality embodied by the United States -- and by Obama -- does not arise out of nothing. You might ask yourself about its source. But, as discussed in the earlier post (and in the numerous linked essays), almost no one cares to investigate such matters, for that would be far too threatening to the lies which sustain most people's lives. When you engage in denial, avoidance and lies on this huge a scale, you make possible this. In fact, my title here is very close to the title of the next part of the "Fools for Empire" series: "The Depraved Obscenity of America's Lies, and the Terrible Costs of Denial." That essay should be completed in the next several days. Large-scale denial and avoidance impose terrifying costs. Today's story may simply be absurd, and it undeniably is. The man or woman, or child, whose life and mind are seared beyond recognition in the next minute, and hour, and day, and year, in all the nightmare years to come, is condemned to torment and death by the lies upon which we insist, the lies we refuse to give up or even question. These abominable lies will kill you yet -- but not until they've killed an unforgivable number of other people. Of course, just a few more individuals could decide to tell the truth, perhaps just one small truth a day. Is that truly too much to hope for, a fool's dream? Is it? You tell me. While American officials continue to claim that the mission of US Middle East Envoy George Mitchell is by no means over, and that he will still pursue his efforts to convince the Israeli government to agree to some sort of settlement freeze, Israeli plans for further colonization of Palestinian land continue undisturbed. The latest Israeli plans call for the destruction of the West Bank village of al-Walajah for the second time in six decades.

According to Israeli press reports, Israel is planning a massive new settlement in the vicinity of Jerusalem, on land owned by Palestinians of al-Walajah. The project, expected to be approved by the Israeli ministry of the Interior, could become the single most populous settlement built in the occupied Palestinian territories since 1967 according to the Israeli daily Maariv. The project plans prepared by the ministry of the Interior and the Jerusalem municipality call for 14,000 housing units for 40,000 settlers on 3,000 dunums of land which would require the demolition of al-Walajah residents' homes, according to the paper.

The original village of al-Walajah was located on the opposite side of its current location, on a mountain slope facing east, just about six kilometers south of Jerusalem. It was very close to Battir, the village in which I was born and brought up. The two villages were separated by a valley, with Battir on the opposite slope from al-Walajah, though a little further south and were very closely linked.

The railway from Jerusalem to the Palestinian coastal city of Jaffa ran right through that valley, which also marks the 1949 armistice line following the end of the 1948 war (also known as the "Green Line.")

During October 1948, Zionist forces attacked and occupied al-Walajah. Its roughly 1,800 inhabitants were scattered in every direction, sharing the fate of Palestinians from hundreds of other towns and villages ethnically cleansed in the same period.

I have strong memories of visiting al-Walajah as a young child, which was walking distance from my village. Often when I was dispatched by one of my parents to purchase something for the house from the only shop in our village, I was advised to try the shop in al-Walajah if the item was not to be found in Battir.

There was active social interaction and intermarriage between the small, tight-knit populations of al-Walajah and Battir. There were daily exchanges of visits and sharing of most kinds of public events. That also applied to many other villages which were within walking distance from Battir such as Beit Safafa, al-Malhah, al-Jawrah, Ain Karem, al-Qabou and Sataf; all were occupied and ethnically cleansed in that first war.

That kind of cozy relationship amongst the small populations of Palestinian villages was all but destroyed by the 1948 war. When the inhabitants of Battir returned home after several months of forced refuge elsewhere when the village during the war came under direct fire, al-Walajah, which used to bustle with life was now silent and deserted. The demarcation line delineated following the 1949 armistice had left al-Walajah just west of the line, on the Israeli side. Battir was barely saved with the barbed wire running through the village cutting most of the village agricultural land, some houses and the boys school. Later, we watched as the Israeli army started to demolish al-Walajah, house by house. We would see a cloud of smoke and dust shoot up into the air over a house, followed by the sound of an explosion, leaving nothing but a heap of rubble. Al-Walajah was completely destroyed before Israel built the settlement of Aminadav and a park where Israelis picnic on its lands.

Apparently the people of al-Walajah owned land across the hills to the east, well within the West Bank, and that is where they decided to settle temporarily until the awaited hope of justice and redemption from the United Nations, which like many Palestinians, they still thought would come.

But time passed and justice never visited them, so they started to build homes and created a new al-Walajah. This new town is the one now threatened with ethnic cleansing. Of course the standard Israeli excuse for destroying Palestinians homes is that they were built "without permission."

The irony is that the Israelis have all along permitted themselves to massacre, ethnically cleanse, occupy, confiscate, destroy and commit every sort of crime against their Palestinian victims while Palestinians are severely punished for building on their land in their country. Al-Walajah in 1948 and now, bears witness to Israel's insatiable appetite for Palestinian land.

Israel's brazen acceleration of settlement construction on occupied Palestinian land is unquestionably a result of international, and particularly American, policy failures and the refusal to hold Israel accountable under international law.

While we have constantly witnessed the so-called "international community" relentlessly tracking down alleged violations and violators in Iran, Syria, Sudan, Lebanon, Kenya, Burma and among Palestinians not affiliated with US-backed Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas, Israel is offered unconditional impunity.

It doesn't stop there; Israel is not only exempt from punishment but routinely rewarded for its crimes. After six months of defiant rejection of American requests to stop settlement construction, the Americans were the ones who finally dropped the demand and put pressure instead on the Palestinian Authority (PA) to drop its conditions to restart "negotiations."

Last month's New York summit of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and PA leader Mahmoud Abbas, hosted by US President Barack Obama, was Netanyahu's first great diplomatic victory. Following the growing public outrage at the PA's shelving of the Goldstone report into Israel's war crimes in Gaza, it emerged (according to the BBC Arabic Service on 3 October) that Abbas agreed in New York to drop the Palestinian effort to have the report forwarded to the Security Council for further action. This is a second major Israeli victory. Netanyahu, it should be recalled, had dwelled heavily on the Goldstone report in his address to the UN General Assembly rejecting the report as a serious obstacle to peace. Abbas on his part ignored any mere mention of the report in his own UN speech. This indicates that Abbas had already acquiesced to public and private American and Israeli demands to shelve the Goldstone report.

Israel's third victory is the revelation that the Obama administration, like all its predecessors, has agreed to help Israel continue to hide its nuclear weapons arsenal that threatens the region and all of humanity, while the US and its allies escalate their pressure on Iran in response to Israeli incitement.

All of these events are directly linked to what happens to people in al-Walajah -- and indeed all over Palestine from Galilee to Gaza -- who from 1948 until now, continue steadfastly and stubbornly to defend their rights and existence even as they still hope for international justice that has yet to come.

What a sad hoax! Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for killing innocent Muslims
Is this what Obama meant when he said "helping Afghanistan"? Helping Afghanistan is more bodies for the Afghan people to bury and more children and people being killed in their own homes during bombardments. Obama got the Nobel Prize because Olmert didn't kill enough Muslims during the Holocaust annno 2009, Olmert and his Nazi army killed only 430 children, that was not enough for the International Banking Cartel. That's why Obama got the Nobel Price of "War". War is peace for those Nazi criminals. Probably he got the Price after promising more bloodshed and more false flag attacks in Pipelineistan and to help the Banking Cartel to fulfill the Nabucco project. This is written by Censored31. A Jew bid to buy Al-Jazeera from Qatar
An Israeli media tycoon has offered to buy the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera satellite television network from the government of Qatar. Haim Saban, has submitted an offer to the Qatari government in a bid to purchase half of the Doha -based Al-Jazeera satellite network. The Egyptian newspaper al-Mesryoon reported Wednesday that the Israeli billionaire is currently engaged in negotiations with Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, over the partial purchase of the media outlet. The talks are said to be conducted through an Egyptian mediator. The account comes amid reports that the largest and most controversial Arab news channel in the Middle East is grappling with a terrible financial crisis at present. Saban had previously made an offer to purchase al-Jazeera in 2004, but it was turned down. The Israeli-American magnate has supposedly made an offer of $5 billion for the popular Arabic-language news channel, in an attempt to get a hold of it and to broadcast a pro-Israeli message so as to influence the Arab opinion in favor of Tel Aviv's hawkish regime. Haim Saban, is a prominent supporter of Israel and the right-wing Netanyahu government. In addition, the Egyptian-born Jewish businessman is well known for his under-the-table dealings.

FALSE FLAG ATTACK: Blast in Pakistan's Peshawar kills 41
PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A suspected suicide car-bomber killed 41 people on Friday in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, government officials said, vowing to press ahead with an offensive against militants in the northwest. "We have 41 dead and about 100 wounded but the figure could go up as over a dozen wounded are in critical condition," Syed Zahir Shah, provincial health minister, told Reuters by telephone. "I think the incident of today has accelerated this," he said, referring to preparations for the offensive. Japan threatens to kick out US troops
Julian Ryall Telegraph October 8, 2009 A d v e r t i s e m e n t The new government is reviewing an agreement with Washington on US military facilities following through on a campaign pledge to islanders who have borne the brunt of the American presence for more than 60 years. Around 50,000 American troops are based in Japan, around two-thirds of the total are in Okinawa. Resentment against their presence has grown in recent years due to a series of crimes committed by service personnel. Many of the crimes are relatively trivial, but other cases have brought tens of thousands of protesters onto the streets. In February 2008, a case against a marine accused of raping a girl aged 14 was dropped after she withdrew the accusation, apparently to avoid the ordeal of a trial. The case revived bitter memories of the abduction and rape of a 12-year-old schoolgirl in 1995 by three US servicemen. Katsuya Okada, the foreign minister, said he wants the American military to remain in Japan but that the concentration on Japan’s most southerly islands needed to be reduced.

US Supreme Court justices are expected to meet Friday to decide whether to take up the case.

Congressional lawmakers moved a step closer Wednesday toward banning the Department of Defense from releasing photographs depicting US Soldiers abusing detainees held in prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Conferees on the Senate and House Appropriations Committees released a Homeland Security spending bill summary, which includes a provision that would allow President Obama to authorize "the Secretary of Defense to bar the release of detainee photos," essentially exempting the images from Freedom of Information Act requests.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued the government in 2003 to gain access to photographs and videos related to the treatment of "war on terror" prisoners in US custody, criticized committee members who supported the measure.

"Congress should not give the government the authority to hide evidence of its own misconduct, and if it does grant that authority, the Secretary of Defense should not invoke it," said Jameel Jaffer, director of the ACLU's National Security Project. "If this shameful provision passes, Secretary [of Defense Robert] Gates should take into account the importance of transparency to the democratic process, the extraordinary importance of these photos to the ongoing debate about the treatment of prisoners, and the likelihood that the suppression of these photos will ultimately be far more damaging to our national security than their disclosure would be.

"The last administration's decision to endorse torture undermined the United States' moral authority and compromised its security. The failure of the current administration to fully confront the abuses of the last administration will only compound these harms."

The US District Court for the Southern District of New York ordered the release of the photos in a June 2005 ruling that was affirmed by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in September 2008. The Obama administration indicated earlier this year it would abide by a court order and release at least 44 of the photographs in question, but President Obama backtracked, saying he conferred with high-ranking military officials who advised him that releasing the images would stoke anti-American sentiment and would endanger the lives of US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As Truthout previously reported, the Obama administration petitioned the US Supreme Court to hear the case at the same time the president privately told Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) he would work with Congress to help get a measure passed aimed at blocking the photographs from being released.

That revelation was made in a footnote contained in a 33-page petition the Obama administration filed with the high-court in August.

According to the petition and other documents, the photographs at issue includes one in which a female solider pointed a broom at one detainee "as if I was sticking the end of a broom stick into [his] rectum."

Other photos are said to show US soldiers pointing guns at the heads of hooded and bound detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan. The filing also notes that the detainee abuse was investigated by the US Army's Criminal Investigation Division and "three of the six investigations led to criminal charges and in two of those cases, the accused were found guilty and punished."

Supreme Court justices are expected to meet Friday to discuss whether they intend to take up the case. Presumably, the Obama administration would withdraw its Supreme Court petition if Congress passes a final version of the bill with the language banning the photos intact.

Obama's decision to fight to conceal the photos to the Supreme Court marks an about-face on the open-government policies that he proclaimed during his first days in office.

On January 21, Obama signed an executive order instructing all federal agencies and departments to "adopt a presumption in favor" of Freedom of Information Act requests and promised to make the federal government more transparent.

"The Government should not keep information confidential merely because public officials might be embarrassed by disclosure, because errors and failures might be revealed, or because of speculative or abstract fears," Obama's order said. "In responding to requests under the FOIA, executive branch agencies should act promptly and in a spirit of cooperation, recognizing that such agencies are servants of the public."

Lieberman and Graham sharply criticized Obama's original decision not to fight the appeals court ruling in favor of the ACLU's FOIA lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court. Lieberman and Graham then sponsored an amendment - the Detainee Photographic Records Protection Act of 2009 - attached to the Senate's Homeland Security appropriations bill that called for the Department of Defense to prohibit the release of abuse photographs for a period of three years.

The Senate unanimously passed the Lieberman/Graham amendment on July 9. Congressmen Mike Conaway (R-Texas) and Heath Shuler (D-North Carolina) sponsored similar legislation in the House. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said at the time it was a strong possibility the language barring release of the photographs would be stripped from the final version of the spending bill, which now appears unlikely.

In a statement after House and Senate conferees on the Appropriations Committee met Wednesday, Lieberman and Graham said they are both "looking forward" to swift passage of the legislation and urged Obama to sign the bill into law.

"I'm pleased Congress has finally acted to prevent the further release of photos showing detainee abuse," Graham said. "I hope the courts will give deference to the Executive and Legislative branches who now speak with one voice prohibiting the photos' release. From the beginning I have said these photos do not add anything new. The release of these photos would be used by our enemies to incite violence against our soldiers and civilians serving abroad."

Last September, in upholding a lower court ruling ordering the release of the photos, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals noted that past US administrations had championed the release of photos that showed prisoners of war being abused and tortured.

Notably, after World War II, the US government publicized photos of prisoners in Japanese and German prisons and concentration camps, which the court noted, "showed emaciated prisoners, subjugated detainees, and even corpses. But the United States championed the use of the photos as a means of holding the perpetrators accountable."

Additionally, the appeals court shot down arguments like those made by Graham, saying, "It is plainly insufficient to claim that releasing documents could reasonably be expected to endanger some unspecified member of a group so vast as to encompass all United States troops, coalition forces, and civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan," the appeals court panel of judges ruled.

The appeals court further added that releasing "the photographs is likely to further the purposes of the Geneva Conventions by deterring future abuse of prisoners."

The Disney Empire, headed by a man described by one media analyst as a “control freak”, includes several television production companies (Walt Disney Television, Touchstone Television, Buena Vista Television), its own cable network with 14 million subscribers, and two video production companies. As for feature films, the Walt Disney Picture Group, headed by Joe Roth (also a Jew), includes Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures, and Caravan Pictures. Disney also owns Miramax Films, run by the Weinstein brothers. When the Disney Company was run by the Gentile Disney family prior to its takeover by Eisner in 1984, it epitomized wholesome, family entertainment. While it still holds the rights to Snow White, under Eisner, the company has expanded into the production of graphic sex and violence. In addition, it has 225 affiliated stations in the United States and is part owner of several European TV companies. ABC’s cable subsidiary, ESPN, is headed by president and CEO Steven Bornstein, a Jew. This corporation also has a controlling share of Lifetime Television and the Arts & Entertainment Network cable companies. ABC Radio Network owns eleven AM and ten FM stations, again in major cities such as New York, Washington, Los Angeles, and has over 3,400 affiliates. Although primarily a telecommunications company, Capital Cities/ABC earned over $1 billion in publishing in 1994. It owns seven daily newspapers, Fairchild Publications, Chilton Publications, and the Diversified Publishing Group. Time Warner, Inc, is the second of the international media leviathans. The chairman of the board and CEO, Gerald Levin, is a Jew. Time Warner’s subsidiary HBO is the country’s largest pay-TV cable network. Warner Music is by far the world’s largest record company, with 50 labels, the biggest of which is Warner Brothers Records, headed by Danny Goldberg. Stuart Hersch is president of Warnervision, Warner Music’s video production unit. Goldberg and Hersch are Jews. Warner Music was an early promoter of “gangsta rap.” Through its involvement with Interscope Records, it helped popularize a genre whose graphic lyrics explicitly urge Blacks to commit acts of violence against Whites. In addition to cable and music, Time Warner is heavily involved in the production of feature films (Warner Brothers Studio) and publishing. Time Warner’s publishing division (editor-in-chief Norman Pearlstine, a Jew) is the largest magazine publisher in the country (Time, Sports Illustrated, People, Fortune). When Ted Turner, a Gentile, made a bid to buy CBS in 1985, there was panic in media boardrooms across the nation. Turner made a fortune in advertising and then had built a successful cable-TV news network, CNN. Although Turner employed a number of Jews in key executive positions in CNN and had never taken public positions contrary to Jewish interests, he is a man with a large ego and a strong personality and was regarded by Chairman William Paley (real name Palinsky, a Jew) and the other Jews at CBS as uncontrollable: a loose cannon who might at some time in the future turn against them. Furthermore, Jewish newsman Daniel Schorr, who had worked for Turner, publicly charged that his former boss held a personal dislike for Jews. To block Turner’s bid, CBS executives invited billionaire Jewish theater, hotel, insurance, and cigarette magnate Laurence Tisch to launch a “friendly” takeover of the company, and from 1986 till 1995 Tisch was the chairman and CEO of CBS, removing any threat of non-Jewish influence there. Subsequent efforts by Turner to acquire a major network have been obstructed by Levin’s Time Warner, which owns nearly 20 percent of CBS stock and has veto power over major deals. Viacom, Inc, headed by Sumner Redstone (born Murray Rothstein), a Jew, is the third largest megamedia corporation in the country, with revenues of over $10 billion a year. Viacom, which produces and distributes TV programs for the three largest networks, owns 12 television stations and 12 radio stations. It produces feature films through Paramount Pictures, headed by Jewess Sherry Lansing. Its publishing division includes Prentice Hall, Simon & Schuster, and Pocket Books. It distributes videos through over 4,000 Blockbuster stores. Viacom’s chief claim to fame, however, is as the world’s largest provider of cable programming, through its Showtime, MTV, Nickelodeon, and other networks. Since 1989, MTV and Nickelodeon have acquired larger and larger shares of the younger television audience. With the top three, and by far the largest, media companies in the hand of Jews, it is difficult to believe that such an overwhelming degree of control came about without a deliberate, concerted effort on their part. What about the other big media companies? Number four on the list is Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation, which owns Fox Television and 20th Century Fox Films. Murdoch is a Gentile, but Peter Chermin, who heads Murdoch’s film studio and also oversees his TV production, is a Jew. Number five is the Japanese Sony Corporation, whose U.S. subsidiary, Sony Corporation of America, is run by Michael Schulhof, a Jew. Alan Levine, another Jew, heads the Sony Pictures division. Most of the television and movie production companies that are not owned by the largest corporations are also controlled by Jews. For example, New World Entertainment, proclaimed by one media analyst as “the premiere independent TV program producer in the United States,” is owned by Ronald Perelman, a Jew. The best known of the smaller media companies, Dreamworks SKG, is a strictly kosher affair. Dream Works was formed in 1994 amid great media hype by recording industry mogul David Geffen, former Disney Pictures chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, and film director Steven Spielberg, all three of whom are Jews. The company produces movies, animated films, television programs, and recorded music. Two other large production companies, MCA and Universal Pictures, are both owned by Seagram Company, Ltd. The president and CEO of Seagram, the liquor giant, is Edgar Bronfman Jr., who is also president of the World Jewish Congress. It is well known that Jews have controlled the production and distribution of films since the inception of the movie industry in the early decades of the 20th century. This is still the case today. Films produced by just the five largest motion picture companies mentioned above-Disney, Warner Brothers, Sony, Paramount (Viacom), and Universal (Seagram)-accounted for 74 per cent of the total box-office receipts for the first eight months of 1995. The big three in television network broadcasting used to be ABC, CBS, and NBC. With the consolidation of the media empires, these three are no longer independent entities. While they were independent, however, each was controlled by a Jew since its inception: ABC by Leonard Goldenson, CBS first by William Paley and then by Lawrence Tisch, and NBC first by David Sarnoff and then by his son Robert. Over periods of several decades, these networks were staffed from top to bottom with Jews, and the essential Jewishness of network television did not change when the networks were absorbed by other corporations. The Jewish presence in television news remains particularly strong. As noted, ABC is part of Eisner’s Disney Company, and the executive producers of ABC’s news programs are all Jews: Victor Neufeld (20-20), Bob Reichbloom (Good Morning America), and Rick Kaplan (World News Tonight). CBS was recently purchased by Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Nevertheless, the man appointed by Lawrence Tisch, Eric Ober, remains president of CBS News, and Ober is a Jew. At NBC, now owned by General Electric, NBC News president Andrew Lack is a Jew, as are executive producers Jeff Zucker (Today), Jeff Gralnick (NBC Nightly News), and Neal Shapiro (Dateline). The Print Media After television news, daily newspapers are the most influential information medium in America. Sixty million of them are sold (and presumably read) each day. These millions are divided among some 1,500 different publications. One might conclude that the sheer number of different newspapers across America would provide a safeguard against Jewish control and distortion. However, this is not the case. There is less independence, less competition, and much less representation of our interests than a casual observer would think. The days when most cities and even towns had several independently owned newspapers published by local people with close ties to the community are gone. Today, most “local” newspapers are owned by a rather small number of large companies controlled by executives who live and work hundreds or ever thousands of miles away. The fact is that only about 25 per cent of the country’s 1,500 papers are independently owned; the rest belong to multi-newspaper chains. Only a handful are large enough to maintain independent reporting staffs outside their own communities; the rest depend on these few for all of their national and international news. The Newhouse empire of Jewish brothers Samuel and Donald Newhouse provides an example of more than the lack of real competition among America’s daily newspapers: it also illustrates the insatiable appetite Jews have shown for all the organs of opinion control on which they could fasten their grip. The Newhouses own 26 daily newspapers, including several large and important ones, such as the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Newark Star-Ledger, and the New Orleans Times-Picayune; the nation’s largest trade book publishing conglomerate, Random House, with all its subsidiaries; Newhouse Broadcasting, consisting of 12 television broadcasting stations and 87 cable-TV systems, including some of the country’s largest cable networks; the Sunday supplement Parade, with a circulation of more than 22 million copies per week; some two dozen major magazines, including the New Yorker, Vogue, Madmoiselle, Glamour, Vanity Fair, Bride’s, Gentlemen’s Quarterly, Self, House & Garden, and all the other magazines of the wholly owned Conde Nast group. This Jewish media empire was founded by the late Samuel Newhouse, an immigrant from Russia. The gobbling up of so many newspapers by the Newhouse family was in large degree made possible by the fact that newspapers are not supported by their subscribers, but by their advertisers. It is advertising revenue–not the small change collected from a newspaper’s readers–that largely pays the editor’s salary and yields the owner’s profit. Whenever the large advertisers in a city choose to favor one newspaper over another with their business, the favored newspaper will flourish while its competitor dies. Since the beginning of the 20th century, when Jewish mercantile power in America became a dominant economic force, there has been a steady rise in the number of American newspapers in Jewish hands, accompanied by a steady decline in the number of competing Gentile newspapers–primarily as a result of selective advertising policies by Jewish merchants. Furthermore, even those newspapers still under Gentile ownership and management are so thoroughly dependent upon Jewish advertising revenue that their editorial and news reporting policies are largely constrained by Jewish likes and dislikes. It holds true in the newspaper business as elsewhere that he who pays the piper calls the tune. Three Jewish Newspapers The suppression of competition and the establishment of local monopolies on the dissemination of news and opinion have characterized the rise of Jewish control over America’s newspapers. The resulting ability of the Jews to use the press as an unopposed instrument of Jewish policy could hardly be better illustrated than by the examples of the nation’s three most prestigious and influential newspapers: the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. These three, dominating America’s financial and political capitals, are the newspapers which set the trends and the guidelines for nearly all the others. They are the ones which decide what is news and what isn’t, at the national and international levels. They originate the news; the others merely copy it, and all three newspapers are in Jewish hands. The New York Times was founded in 1851 by two Gentiles, Henry Raymond and George Jones. After their deaths, it was purchased in 1896 from Jones’s estate by a wealthy Jewish publisher, Adolph Ochs. His great-grandson, Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr., is the paper’s current publisher and CEO. The executive editor is Max Frankel, and the managing editor is Joseph Lelyveld. Both of the latter are also Jews. The Sulzberger family also owns, through the New York Times Co., 33 other newspapers, including the Boston Globe; twelve magazines, including McCall’s and Family Circle with circulations of more than 5 million each; seven radio and TV broadcasting stations; a cable-TV system; and three book publishing companies. The New York Times News Service transmits news stories, features, and photographs from the New York Times by wire to 506 other newspapers, news agencies, and magazines. Of similar national importance is the Washington Post, which, by establishing its “leaks” throughout government agencies in Washington, has an inside track on news involving the Federal government. The Washington Post, like the New York Times, had a non-Jewish origin. It was established in 1877 by Stilson Hutchins, purchased from him in 1905 by John McLean, and later inherited by Edward McLean. In June 1933, however, at the height of the Great Depression, the newspaper was forced into bankruptcy. It was purchased at a bankruptcy auction by Eugene Meyer, a Jewish financier. The Washington Post is now run by Katherine Meyer Graham, Eugene Meyer’s daughter. She is the principal stockholder and the board chairman of the Washington Post Co. In 1979, she appointed her son Donald publisher of the paper. He now also holds the posts of president and CEO of the Washington Post Co. The Washington Post Co. has a number of other media holdings in newspapers, television, and magazines, most notably the nation’s number-two weekly newsmagazine, Newsweek. The Wall Street Journal, which sells 1.8 million copies each weekday, is the nation’s largest-circulation daily newspaper. It is owned by Dow Jones & Company, Inc., a New York corporation which also publishes 24 other daily newspapers and the weekly financial tabloid Barron’s, among other things. The chairman and CEO of Dow Jones is Peter Kann, who is a Jew. Kann also holds the posts of chairman and publisher of the Wall Street Journal. Most of New York’s other major newspapers are in no better hands than the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. The New York Daily News is owned by Jewish real-estate developer Mortimer B. Zuckerman. The Village Voice is the personal property of Leonard Stern, the billionaire Jewish owner of the Hartz Mountain pet supply firm. Other Mass Media The story is pretty much the same for other media as it is for television, radio, and newspapers. Consider, for example, newsmagazines. There are only three of any note published in the United States: Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report. Time, with a weekly circulation of 4.1 million, is published by a susidiary of Time Warner Communications. The CEO of Time Warner Communications, as mentioned above, is Gerald Levin, a Jew. Newsweek, as mentioned above, is published by the Washington Post Company, under the Jewess Katherine Meyer Graham. Its weekly circulation is 3.2 million. U.S. News & World Report, with a weekly circulation of 2.3 million, is owned and published by Mortimer Zuckerman, a Jew. Zuckerman also owns the Atlantic Monthly and New York’s tabloid newspaper, the Daily News, which is the sixth-largest paper in the country. Among the giant book-publishing conglomerates, the situation is also Jewish. Three of the six largest book publishers in the U.S., according to Publisher’s Weekly, are owned or controlled by Jews. The three are first-place Random House (with its many subsidiaries, including Crown Publishing Group), third-place Simon & Schuster, and sixth-place Time Warner Trade Group (including Warner Books and Little, Brown). Another publisher of special significance is Western Publishing. Although it ranks only 13th in size among all U.S. publishers, it ranks first among publishers of children’s books, with more than 50 percent of the market. Its chairman and CEO is Richard Snyder, a Jew, who just replaced Richard Bernstein, also a Jew. The Effect of Jewish Control of the Media These are the facts of Jewish media control in America. Anyone willing to spend several hours in a large library can verify their accuracy. I hope that these facts are disturbing to you, to say the least. Should any minority be allowed to wield such awesome power? Certainly, not and allowing a people with beliefs such as expressed in the Talmud, to determine what we get to read or watch in effect gives this small minority the power to mold our minds to suit their own Talmudic interests, interests which as we have demonstrated are diametrically opposed to the interests of our people. By permitting the Jews to control our news and entertainment media, we are doing more than merely giving them a decisive influence on our political system and virtual control of our government; we also are giving them control of the minds and souls of our children, whose attitudes and ideas are shaped more by Jewish television and Jewish films than by their parents, their schools, or any other influence.

The lead-up to the first U.S.-Iran talks in three decades saw a replay of the same modus operandi that induced the U.S. and its allies to invade Iraq in March 2003. Then as now, the invasion of Iran is consistent with a regime change agenda for Greater Israel described in a 1996 strategy document prepared by Jewish-Americans for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. As with Iraq, the threat of weapons of mass destruction is again marketed as a causa belli. As with Iraq, the claim is disputed by weapons inspectors and intelligence analysts. The Iraqi program had been shut down a dozen years before the invasion. In Iran, there is no evidence that uranium is being enriched beyond the low levels required for energy and medical purposes. Reports of a “secret” processing plant failed to note that Iran suspended uranium enrichment from 2003 until 2005. Seeing no change in the political climate except more sanctions and more Israeli threats to bomb its nuclear sites, Iran began building and equipping a new facility. As with Iraq, there is no direct threat to the U.S. As with Iraq, mainstream U.S. media focused not on Israel—the only nation in the region known to have nuclear weapons—but on Iran. Enrichment is relatively easy compared to the steps required to design, build and reliably deliver a nuclear warhead. Activity around each of those steps can be readily detected. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates acknowledged that even if Iran were attacked, that does nothing to alter Iran’s nuclear prospects—except provoke them to develop the very weapons that the evidence suggests are not now being produced. Is this a calculated move to exert pressure on Tehran? Or to provoke them? Or is this a move by Washington to buy time from an “ally” that threatens an attack—with disastrous effects on U.S. interests and those of its genuine allies? To catalyze a climate of insecurity among Jews, pro-Israelis periodically claim that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proposes to “wipe Israel off the map.” A correct translation confirms that what he urged is that “this occupation regime over Jerusalem must vanish from the pages of time.” Akin to the widely sought demise of the oppressive Soviet regime, that proposal enjoys the support of many moderate, secular and non-Zionist Jews who have long recognized the threat that Jewish extremists pose to the broader Jewish community. No one can explain why Iran, even if nuclear armed, would attack Israel with its vast nuclear arsenal estimated at 200-400 warheads, including several nuclear-armed submarines. In mid-July, Israeli warships deployed to the Red Sea to rehearse attacks on Iran. As in the lead-up to war with Iraq, former Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz is again beating the war drums. This is the same adviser who, four days after 9-11, advised G.W. Bush to invade Iraq. Citing Iran’s “covert” facility, Wolfowitz claims it is “clear that Iran’s rulers are pursuing nuclear weapons.…Time is running out.” Without a hint of irony, he argues that Iran (not Israel) “is a crucial test of whether the path to a nuclear-free world is a realistic one or simply a dangerous pipe dream.” In calling for “crippling sanctions,” Howard Berman, Jewish chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, expressed similar concerns as did Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, senior Republican on the Committee and also Jewish. If pro-Israelis cannot induce a war with Iran, the ensuing stability will enable people to identify who fixed the intelligence that deceived the U.S. to invade Iraq. Only one nation possesses the means, motive, opportunity and stable nation state intelligence to mount a covert operation over the lengthy period required to pre-stage, staff, orchestrate and successfully cover-up such an act. The evidence points to the same network of government insiders and media proponents now hyping Iran. Who benefitted from war with Iraq? Who benefits from war with Iran? Not the U.S. or its allies unless, despite the evidence, Israel is viewed as an ally–rather than an enemy within. Can the U.S. muster a breakthrough strategy? Like Afghanistan, Iran does not have a military solution. Nor does Iraq. Geopolitically, the greatest casualty of war in the region was the United States – its credibility tattered, its military overextended and its finances devastated by a debt-financed war that Nobel laureate economist Joseph Stiglitz projects could reach $3,000 billion. Compare that with the speedy exit and a $50 billion outlay that Wolfowitz assured policy-makers could be recovered from sales of Iraqi oil. Those who induced that invasion persuaded Americans to commit economic and geopolitical hari-kari. No external force could have defeated the sole remaining super power. Instead the U.S. was deceived—by a purported ally—to defeat itself by an ill-advised reaction to the provocation of a mass murder on U.S. soil. The only sensible and sustainable solution is one that serves unmet needs in the region while also restoring the credibility of the U.S. as a proponent of informed choice and free enterprise. While making transparent the common source of the deceit that induced the U.S. to war, policy-makers can also lay the foundation to preclude such duplicity in the future. That requires consultation among the U.S. , its true allies and those nations in the region most affected by this treachery. Only a design solution can counter today’s systemic sources of conflict, including the extremism fueled by extremes in education, opportunity, wealth and income. As with the fixed intelligence that induced the U.S. to war in Iraq, those sources of conflict are obscured by a compliant and complicit media with an undisclosed pro-Israeli bias. A transnational network of think tanks could expose in real time how facts are displaced by what “the mark” can be deceived to believe. With the media dominance of pro-Israelis in the U.S. , Canada, the U.K., Germany and other Western allies, that task must include the capacity to show how this deceit operates in plain sight yet, to date, with impunity. Absent such transparency, systems of governance reliant on informed consent will continue to be manipulated to their detriment by those who hide behind the very freedoms that such systems are meant to protect. Running parallel with that transparency initiative must be an education program that deploys the best available technology to close the gaps in learning that sustain extremes in opportunity. Only a truly international effort can succeed in that essential task. Only trans-cultural education can preempt the mental manipulation that induced war in Iraq and now pursues war with Iran as proponents of The Clash of Civilizations gradually transform that concept into a reality. What we now see emerging is yet another example of how wars are induced in the Information Age. Why would anyone expect modern warfare to be waged in any other way? As the common source of this duplicity becomes transparent, the solution will become apparent. Lasting peace requires a Marshall Plan able to accelerate the transition to the Knowledge Society. This systemic challenge cannot be addressed absent a systemic strategy. UPDATE Kabul blast: Afghan officials have said at least 17 people were killed and more than 80 wounded
Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan claims that the Afghan bomb, was a gift to the Indian worshipping embassy for their war crimes committed against innocent youth. KABUL – The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for Thursday's suicide car bomb in the Afghan capital, saying their target was the Indian Embassy. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement posted on the Emirate's Web site that the attacker was an Afghan man who blew up his vehicle laden with explosives just outside the embassy. Afghan officials have said at least 12 people were killed and more than 80 wounded in the morning blast. The explosion occurred in an area that is also full of shops and near the Interior Ministry.

Massive Ordnance Penetrator: Another Sign Obama Will Strike Iran

The Pentagon has put a new weapon on the fast-track. The Massive Ordnance Penetrator is a 30,000-pound bomb designed to hit targets buried 200 feet below ground. Earlier this year, the Pentagon comptroller sent a request to shift funds to the House and Senate Appropriations and Armed Services Committees in order to fast forward the development and procurement of the Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP, according to ABC News. The notification was included in a 93-page “reprogramming” request that included hundreds of items.

The comptroller said the Pentagon planned to spend $19.1 million to procure four of the bombs, $28.3 million to accelerate the bomb’s “development and testing”, and $21 million to accelerate the integration of the bomb onto B-2 stealth bombers.

The Air Force 708th Armament Systems Group at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida awarded a $51.9 million contract on October 2 to the Boeing Co. in St. Louis to integrate the Massive Ordnance Penetrator on a B-2 stealth bomber, the Military & Aero website reported on October 4.

“The Department has an Urgent Operational Need (UON) for the capability to strike hard and deeply buried targets in high threat environments. The MOP is the weapon of choice to meet the requirements of the UON.” It further states that the request is endorsed by Pacific Command (which has responsibility over North Korea) and Central Command (which has responsibility over Iran),” the notification states.

“This is not the kind of weapon that would be particularly useful in Iraq or Afghanistan, but it is ideally suited to hit deeply buried nuclear facilities such as Natanz or Qom in Iran,” ABC notes.

“A deep underground tunnel facility in a rock geology poses a significant challenge for non-nuclear weapons. Such a target is difficult to penetrate, except possibly near an adit, and the likelihood of damaging critical functional components deep within the facility from an energy release at the adit is low. Past test experience has shown that 2,000 lb. penetrators carrying 500 lbs. of high explosive are relatively ineffective against tunnels, even when skipped directly into the tunnel entrance,” explains GlobalSecurity.

MOP contains more than 5,300 pounds of conventional explosives inside of a 20.5-foot-long steel enclosure. The weapon is said to be able to penetrate up to about 60 feet of dirt and concrete, the Defense Daily reported on December 4, 2006.

The Pentagon has moved the MOP to the fast track because the Iran attack plan is now operational and will probably be carried out before the end of the year.

The corporate media is now gearing up for an attack by manufacturing census in much the same way they did in the lead-up to the devastating mass murder campaign on Iraq that ultimately resulted in more than a million dead Iraqis. “A majority of Americans are skeptical that diplomacy with Iran will succeed and say the U.S. should use military action if necessary to prevent the Iranian government from developing a nuclear weapon,” Bloomberg reported on October 6. “A Pew Research Center for the People & the Press survey released today found 61 percent of Americans would support a military strike. Twenty-four percent said it is more important to avoid conflict even if that means Iran will end up building nuclear arms.”

Iraq did not have weapons of mass destruction, as the government and the corporate media claimed, and Iran is not developing nuclear weapons. In September, the U.S. intelligence community told the White House that Iran has not restarted its nuclear-weapons development program. Also in September, the head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, Mohamed ElBaradei, denied Israeli accusations that he has withheld information about Iran’s nuclear progress. Since 2003, the International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly stated that it has found no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

Moreover, as Juan Cole notes, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei issued a fatwa in 2005 that states no Islamic state may possess or use atomic weapons because they kill masses of innocent civilians when used, which is contrary to the Islamic law of war, which forbids killing innocent non-combatants.

The only state in the Middle East that has nuclear weapons is Israel.

“Those who insist that Iran is trying to get a bomb have a difficult time explaining why Khamenei forbids it as un-Islamic and why the president and others all deny it. It is possible that they are lying, but their denials at least have to be noted and analyzed. The skeptics also have to explain away why the 16 US intelligence agencies say after exhaustive espionage and investigation that there is no weapons program now and that there hasn’t been one for some time,” Cole writes.

None of these arguments matter to the global elite because they are determined to reduce Iran to a pile of smoldering rubble much the same way Iraq was reduced. After the Pentagon gets a green light and loads up its stealth bombers with MOPs and other munitions, the destruction will not be limited to Natanz and Qom and Iran’s illusory nuclear weapons program. Iran’s infrastructure will be targeted. Iran’s non-existent nuclear weapons program is merely an excuse for a larger objective — the wholesale destruction of Iranian society and civilization.

By RAHIM FAIEZ, Associated Press Writer Rahim Faiez, Associated Press Writer 35 mins ago KABUL – A powerful explosion rocked the center of Afghanistan's capital early Thursday near the Interior Ministry and the Indian Embassy, where dozens of civilians were killed in an attack last year. An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw at least six people being loaded into the ambulances. Further information on casualties was not immediately available. The blast sounded in the morning, rattling buildings more than a mile (kilometer) away and sending a plume of smoke rising. The center of the explosion appeared to be just outside the Indian embassy, which was hit by a devastating suicide blast more than a year ago. Two sport utility vehicles nearby were badly damaged. One of them was labeled as a U.N. vehicle. The Afghan Interior Ministry is just across the street from Indian Embassy. The road in front of the embassy has been barricaded since the July 2008 attack that 60 people. Windows in surrounding shops were shattered, and walls off buildings were badly damaged in the blast, though none of the multistory buildings along the commercial thoroughfare had collapsed. A man who was injured in the blast said the force of the explosion threw him into the air. Mohammad Arif said he was leaving the Indian Embassy when the blast threw him against a concrete barrier. The left side of his head was bleeding as he spoke. Police officers at the site said they believed it was the work of a suicide bomber, but did not provide further details. U.S. and NATO spokespeople said they did not yet have any information on the explosion. The Afghan capital has been hit numerous times in recent months by suicide bombers and roadside bombs. The attacks usually target international military forces or government installations, but Afghan businesses and civilians are also often killed or injured. Mujahideen in the region said: Thousands of people participated in the flag raising ceremony, among them were sheikhs, elders, students, and the local area people. During the flag raising ceremony, a number of elders called on people, to not be fooled by the trickery of the Americans and their agents, and reminded them that the Americans during the past eighth years, has killed and wounded thousands of people of this district alone, including women and children and destroyed their homes and farms, they have delivered nothing but destruction. Report further said: Tuesday night 06-10-2009, the American and their puppet vacated the area, soon after the American plans drop bombs on their own base, which they had vacated earlier, the bombs destroyed the base. This further proofed to the local people that the enemy has no plans of coming back into this area. Could Yemen be the Next Suprise of the Season? By Imam Anwar al awlaki
The jihad movement around the world has witnessed a surprising growth during the past few years. After 9-11 America had succeeded in pulling together an international coalition in order to fight the mujahedeen. It invaded Afghanistan and Iraq, put pressure on governments around the world to throw anyone with association with Jihad behind bars and to stop the flow of money into Jihad movements. All over the world the mujahedeen have suffered an international effort under the leadership of America to bring an end to Jihad. But Eight years later the mujahedeen are wining on every front and are expanding into new ones. It appeared difficult back then to imagine that the world would be the way it is today just 8 years after 9-11. That is because Rasulullah(saaws) said: "A group of my ummah will continue fighting in the path of Allah and they will not be harmed by those who are against them." The American people gave G.W. Bush unanimous backing to fight against the mujahedeen and gave him a blank check to spend as much as needed to fulfill that objective. The result? He failed, and he failed miserably. So if America failed to defeat the mujahedeen when it gave its president unlimited support, how can it win with Obama who is on a short leash? If America failed to win when it was at its pinnacle of economic strength, how can it win today with a recession - if not a depression- at hand? The simple answer is: America cannot and will not win. The tables have turned and there is no rolling back of the worldwide Jihad movement. The ideas of Jihad are proliferating around the world, the mujahedeen movements are gaining strength and the battlefields are expanding with the mujahedeen introducing new fronts. In Afghanistan the rural areas are mostly under the control of the Taliban and there is a steady improvement in the growth and strength of the mujahedeen. In Iraq even though the US claims an improvement in the security situation but one needs to ask the question at what cost is that achieved? The amount of money America is spending on Iraq with a recession at hand is unattainable. The Jihad of this era started in Palestine, followed by Afghanistan, then Chechnya, then Iraq, then Somalia, then the Maghreb, and the new front might very well turn out to be Yemen. And when this new front of Jihad starts in Yemen it might become the single most important front of Jihad in the world. Why? First, the Arabian Peninsula has always been a land of mujahedeen even though there has been no fighting occurring on its soil. In Afghanistan, Bosnia, Chechnya, and Iraq the participation of mujahedeen from the Arabian Peninsula represented the largest block of foreign mujahedeen. When Jihad starts in the Arabian Peninsula, Jihad would be coming back to its home. Second, he Arabian Peninsula is home to Makkah and Madinah. To free the Holy places from the rule of apostasy and tyranny is to free the heart of Islam. Third, the rulers in the Arabian Peninsula are playing a central role in the fight against Islam especially the al Saud family. The al Saud of today are the Abdullah bin Ubay of yesterday. They have perfected the art of hypocrisy. They fight Islam in the name of Islam. They wear cloaks of sheep on hearts of wolfs. There cannot be Islamic rule and a return to khilafah without removing them from existence and this is the responsibility of the mujahedeen of the Arabian Peninsula. America and its allies in the area are plotting against the mujahedeen, nevertheless their growth increases by the day. May Allah grant the true believers victory and grant them steadfastness on His path. Their intention is to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will complete His light even thought the disbelievers may detest it. (al Saff 61)

One of the attributes of Allah is that He Loves His believing slaves in a fashion which befits His Majesty and Might; His slaves in turn love Him more than their wealth, children and their own selves. Allah says what means: “Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him.” (Al- Ma’idah:54) It is mutual love between the Lord and His slaves: “And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals (to Allah). They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe, love Allah more (than anything else).” (Al-Baqarah: 165) The Ruling on Loving Allah Loving Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) more than we love our family, our possessions and anything else in this world is a part of being a true believer in Islam. Anas narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I swear by The One in Whose Hands is my soul, none of you will be a complete believer until I am dearer to him than his father, his son, and all of mankind.” (Bukhari) Loving Allah is a Sign of Strong Belief The Prophet (peace be upon him) informed us that it is a quality of belief and a sign of enjoying the sweetness of faith is realized when the love of Allah and His Messenger is greater than that of anyone or anything else. Anas Ibn Malik narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “One who attains the following three things will taste the sweetness of faith: To make Allah and His Messenger more beloved to himself than anything else; to love a person for no other reason except for the sake of Allah; and to hate to return to disbelief just as much as he would hate to be thrown into fire.” (Bukhari & Muslim) Loving Allah is Following the Way of the Prophet (peace be upon him) Allah says (what means): “Say (O Muhammad): ‘If you (really) love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins.’” (Al ‘Imran:31) How much do we truly follow the Prophet (peace be upon him)? Where are we when it comes to following his Sunnah in our worship, transactions and manners? Where are we when it comes to following his Sunnah in our supplications, remembrance of Allah, recitation of the Quran, seeking the assistance of Allah, relying on Him and taking refuge in Him? Where are we when it comes to following his Sunnah by being kind to our friends, neighbor and parents, and when it comes to being generous to guests and visiting the sick? Where are we when it comes to following his Sunnah in our etiquettes, humility, mercy, leniency and forgiveness? Where are we when it comes to following his Sunnah in bravery, wisdom and Jihad against the enemies of Allah everywhere? The Qualities of Those Whom Allah Loves To do good: “And do good. Truly, Allah loves the good-doers.” (Al-Baqarah:195) To repent and purify themselves: “Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves.” (Al-Baqarah:222) To be are pious: “Yes, whoever fulfils his pledge and fears Allah much; verily, then Allah loves those who are the pious.” (Al ‘Imran:76) To be patient: “But they never lost heart for that which did befall them in Allah’s way, nor did they weaken nor degrade themselves. And Allah loves the patient.” (Al ‘Imran:146) To rely on Allah: “Then when you have taken a decision, rely on Allah, certainly, Allah loves those who rely on Him.” (Al ‘Imran: 159) To be just: “And if you judge, judge with justice between them. Verily, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Al-Ma’idah:42) To be sincere in Jihad: “Verily Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in rows (ranks) as if they were a solid structure.” (As-Saff:4) Beware of Having The Following Qualities Allah has described in His Book the qualities that we must avoid if we want to one of His believing servants that He loves: Disbelief: “But if they turn away, then Allah does not like the disbelievers.” (Al ‘Imran:32) Transgression: “And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors.” (Al-Baqarah:190) Mischief-making: “And they (ever) strive to make mischief on the earth. And Allah does not like the mischief-makers.” (Al- Ma’idah:64) Oppression: “But whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah. Verily, He likes not the oppressors.” (Ash-Shoora:40) Pride and boastfulness: “Verily Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful.” (An-Nisa’:36) Betrayal: “And argue not on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Verily, Allah does not like anyone who is a betrayer, sinner.” (An-Nisa’: 107). Publicly uttering evil: “Allah does not like that the evil should be uttered in public except by him who has been wronged.” (An-Nisa’:148) Extravagance: “Eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not those who waste by extravagance.” (Al-A’raf:31) Taking pride and being ungrateful: “Remember when his people said to him: Do not exult (with riches, being ungrateful to Allah). Verily, Allah likes not those who exult (with riches, being ungrateful to Allah).” (Al- Qasas:76) How to Earn Allah’s Love The true description of attaining Allah’s love comes from a Qudsi Hadith, Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said on behalf of his Lord: “I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshiper of mine. And my servant never comes closer to Me by virtue of anything more than that which I have made compulsory upon him, and my slave continues to draw closer to me by performing optional good deeds until I love him, and if I were to love him I become the hearing by which he hears, the eyesight by which he sees, the hand by which he strikes and the legs by which he walks.” (Bukhari & Muslim) Things Which Instigate Allah’s Love Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, mentioned some examples of things which instigate the love of Allah: 1. Reciting the Quran with attentiveness and pondering over its meanings. 2. Performing optional acts of worship after fulfilling the obligatory ones. 3. Always remembering Allah in the heart, by the tongue and deeds, because one will benefit proportional to the amount that he remembers Allah. 4. Favoring His love over any other love, particularly when your desires become strong. 5. Striving hard to reach that which He loves. 6. Learning and pondering over His qualities and attributes, because the one who learns and ponders over the qualities and attributes of Allah will certainly love Him due to this. 7. Thinking about His apparent and concealed favors and kindness. 8. Supplicating and appealing to Him during the last third of every night, reciting His Book, standing with full servitude before Him and begging for His forgiveness. 9. Being around righteous people who sincerely love Allah and learning the best of what they say, just as one would pick the best fruit from a tree. Also, one should not speak unless one is certain that this is the correct thing to do and that one will benefit by this. 10. Refraining from anything which might become an obstacle between oneself and Allah. All these can be achieved by being willing to perform them and having insight, which can only happen after the help of Allah.

Spanish soldier killed in Afghan blast - five injured
- Summary Posted : Wed, 07 Oct 2009 * By : dpa Madrid - A Spanish soldier was killed and five others injured Wednesday when their vehicle hit an explosive device in western Afghanistan, the Defence Ministry said in Madrid. The explosion occurred near Herat, where the Spanish contingent of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is based. The soldiers were travelling in a lorry forming part of a convoy which was on a reconnaissance and security patrol, media reported. The tasks of the patrol included dismantling illegal checkpoints. The fatality, who was identified as private Cristo Ancor Cabello Santana, died at hospital. The ministry said the other victims sustained light injuries. Defence Minister Carme Chacon was preparing to travel to Afghanistan to supervise the repatriation of Cabello Santana's remains. Spain recently decided to increase its troops in Afghanistan by 220 soldiers to about 1,000 permanent troops. The troop increase was justified partly by the need to step up the security of Spanish troops, following a combat in which Spaniards killed 13 insurgents in early September. Twenty-six Spanish soldiers have been killed in attacks or accidents in Afghanistan. IRAQISTAN: IED hits American Occupation Convoy

An improvished explosive device went off targeting American occupation convoy in al Abbasiyah district of Najaf Province today. Government sources confirmed the attack saying that the blast occurred during the passing of American military forces. The area was immediately closed off by the occupation forces.

Till now no statement was released by the US Occupation Army.

The "reporting" of Judith Miller and Michael Gordon basically served as a front-page fiction laundering factory for Dick Cheney’s fantasy of a "mushroom cloud" threat from Saddam Hussein looming on the immediate horizon, topped off with a celebratory slice of yellowcake. More recently, the paper’s propagandists, William Broad and David Sanger, have aimed their sights on reporting dubious claims about Iran’s nuclear program. Readers of the Times, therefore, should take with a huge grain of weaponized salt the paper’s "review" of Robert Greenwald’s new documentary, Rethink Afghanistan. With no sense of the painful irony of writing such jibberish in the Times, reviewer Andy Webster declares that the film could "use balance, something in short supply here:" At an almost breathless pace that leaves little room for reflection, Mr. Greenwald presents a flurry of sights, voices and figures, many of them compelling but all reflecting his point of view. A historical summary is fleeting. What appears, again and again, are terrifying images of children: dead, hideously maimed or, in one instance, almost put up for sale by a frantic civilian in a refugee camp. Military engagements, it seems, are messy and claim innocent lives. If it takes Greenwald’s "point of view" to see the human costs of the U.S. war in Afghanistan in the form of deformed, maimed and dead civilians, then his film should be required viewing for anyone purporting to support the war. Anyone who has actually seen the film knows that a string of former top intelligence officials, perhaps most significant among them the former head of the CIA’s Counter-terrorism Center, Robert Grenier, are heard meticulously deconstructing the dominant justifications for the continued U.S. military presence in Afghanistan. What does Grenier know? Oh, he was just the CIA station chief in Islamabad, Pakistan, where he was one of the Agency’s top officials planning the U.S. invasion. Grenier, along with former CIA operative Robert Baer and other former intelligence officials, rebut in detail the claim that the war in Afghanistan is about fighting al Qaeda or making America safer, which Baer says bluntly in the film is "just complete bullshit." The film also features Graham Fuller, the former CIA station chief in Kabul. (Click here to watch this part of the film) I guess the Times would have been satisfied if the film did not also include extensive analysis from Anand Gopal, the Afghanistan correspondent of that famed leftist, anti-war rag, The Wall Street Journal. "Al Qaeda and the Taliban are groups with completely distinct ideologies and goals," Gopal says in the film. The Taliban, he says, has as its central goal "to kick out the Americans." Greenwald’s film would presumably have been more "objective" in the Times’s eyes if it had included the analysis of, say, Steve Coll, whose definitive book on al Qaeda, Ghost Wars, won the Pulitzer. Oh, right, Coll is a major voice in Greenwald’s film. Webster complains that the film "has no time to approach an opposing view with sympathy or understanding for its concerns." First of all, that is just plain false. What Greenwald does is divide the one-hour film into cogent sections that address the most common arguments made in support of the war in Afghanistan, namely national security, counter-terrorism and women’s rights. These are all familiar to anyone paying even a tiny amount of attention. But more to the point, why should a documentary calling on people to "rethink Afghanistan" be required to rehash or offer "sympathy" to ideas or policies that are promoted endlessly on major news programs, in corporate newspapers and by an endless string of U.S. government and military officials? Rethink Afghanistan does not present the perfect argument against the war in Afghanistan (I certainly have had my own disagreements with Greenwald and with some of the film’s politics), but that is not what Greenwald and his team intended to do. The title says it all: they want Americans to stop and rethink support for a war that worsens by the day, costs billions of dollars, causes the deaths of U.S. soldiers and countless Afghan civilians and which, ultimately, will make the U.S. less safe. The Times snarkily declares that Rethink Afghanistan is "unlikely to win over new supporters" to the anti-war or anti-escalation crowd. Quite the contrary: there are 600 screenings of the film scheduled and MoveOn.org, which has been very sluggish in coming around to criticizing the Afghan war, has just teamed up with Greenwald to promote the film. That in and of itself was no small accomplishment. The timing of Rethink Afghanistan is very important and will serve a utilitarian purpose for those people serious about the facts and not manipulating them, as has been the case on the pages of a certain newspaper we all know. Detention of young Palestinian children up 74%

[Ramallah, 6 October 2009] DCI - According to the latest figures compiled by DCI-Palestine from sources including the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) and temporary Israeli army detention facilities, the number of Palestinian children detained in Israeli prisons and detention centres inside Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory at the end of September, was 326.

DCI-Palestine is pleased to report that following the recent release of 20 female Palestinian prisoners in exchange for video footage of Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, there are now currently no Palestinian females in Israeli detention under the age of 18. On Friday, 2 October 2009, the remaining three girls were released.

In September, the number of Palestinian children held in Israeli detention facilities fell to 326, the lowest figure this year, but which still represents a 7% increase compared with the corresponding period in 2008. The monthly average number of Palestinian children held in Israeli detention in 2009 still remains high, at 370 per month, compared with 319 in 2008. This represents an increase of 16%.

DCI-Palestine continues to be deeply concerned by the high number of young children between the ages of 12 and 15 being detained. At the end of September 2009, 40 children in this age category were being held in Israeli detention facilities, compared with 23 children in September 2008. This represents an increase of 74%.

As a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), Israel is legally bound to give effect to Article 37 which provides that 'the arrest, detention or imprisonment of a child ... shall be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time.'

If you wish to take action, then please consider lobbying your elected representatives and demand that pressure be applied on Israeli authorities to cease the practice of prosecuting Palestinian children as young as 12 in military courts, and detaining them inside Israel.

The Population Myth
People who claim that population growth is the big environmental issue are shifting the blame from the rich to the poor By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian, 29th Septeember 2009 It’s no coincidence that most of those who are obsessed with population growth are post-reproductive wealthy white men: it’s about the only environmental issue for which they can’t be blamed. The brilliant earth systems scientist James Lovelock, for example, claimed last month that “those who fail to see that population growth and climate change are two sides of the same coin are either ignorant or hiding from the truth. These two huge environmental problems are inseparable and to discuss one while ignoring the other is irrational.”(1) But it’s Lovelock who is being ignorant and irrational. A paper published yesterday in the journal Environment and Urbanization shows that the places where population has been growing fastest are those in which carbon dioxide has been growing most slowly, and vice versa. Between 1980 and 2005, for example, Sub-Saharan Africa produced 18.5% of the world’s population growth and just 2.4% of the growth in CO2. North America turned out 4% of the extra people, but 14% of the extra emissions. Sixty-three per cent of the world’s population growth happened in places with very low emissions(2). Even this does not capture it. The paper points out that around one sixth of the world’s population is so poor that it produces no significant emissions at all. This is also the group whose growth rate is likely to be highest. Households in India earning less than 3,000 rupees a month use a fifth of the electricity per head and one seventh of the transport fuel of households earning Rs30,000 or more. Street sleepers use almost nothing. Those who live by processing waste (a large part of the urban underclass) often save more greenhouse gases than they produce. Many of the emissions for which poorer countries are blamed should in fairness belong to us. Gas flaring by companies exporting oil from Nigeria, for example, has produced more greenhouse gases than all other sources in sub-Saharan Africa put together(3). Even deforestation in poor countries is driven mostly by commercial operations delivering timber, meat and animal feed to rich consumers. The rural poor do far less harm(4). The paper’s author, David Satterthwaite of the International Institute for Environment and Development, points out that the old formula taught to all students of development - that total impact equals population times affluence times technology (I=PAT) - is wrong. Total impact should be measured as I=CAT: consumers times affluence times technology. Many of the world’s people use so little that they wouldn’t figure in this equation. They are the ones who have most children. While there’s a weak correlation between global warming and population growth, there’s a strong correlation between global warming and wealth. I’ve been taking a look at a few superyachts, as I’ll need somewhere to entertain Labour ministers in the style to which they’re accustomed. First I went through the plans for Royal Falcon Fleet’s RFF135, but when I discovered that it burns only 750 litres of fuel per hour(5) I realised that it wasn’t going to impress Lord Mandelson. I might raise half an eyebrow in Brighton with the Overmarine Mangusta 105, which sucks up 850 l/hr(6). But the raft that’s really caught my eye is made by Wally Yachts in Monaco. The WallyPower 118 (which gives total wallies a sensation of power) consumes 3400 l/hr when travelling at 60 knots(7). That’s nearly one litre per second. Another way of putting it is 31 litres per kilometre(8). Of course to make a real splash I’ll have to shell out on teak and mahogany fittings, carry a few jet skis and a mini-submarine, ferry my guests to the marina by private plane and helicopter, offer them bluefin tuna sushi and beluga caviar and drive the beast so fast that I mash up half the marine life of the Mediterranean. As the owner of one of these yachts I’ll do more damage to the biosphere in ten minutes than most Africans inflict in a lifetime. Now we’re burning, baby. Someone I know who hangs out with the very rich tells me that in the banker belt of the lower Thames valley there are people who heat their outdoor swimming pools to bath temperature, all round the year. They like to lie in the pool on winter nights, looking up at the stars. The fuel costs them £3000 a month. One hundred thousand people living like these bankers would knacker our life support systems faster than 10 billion people living like the African peasantry. But at least the super wealthy have the good manners not to breed very much, so the rich old men who bang on about human reproduction leave them alone. In May the Sunday Times carried an article headlined “Billionaire club in bid to curb overpopulation”. It revealed that “some of America’s leading billionaires have met secretly” to decide which good cause they should support. “A consensus emerged that they would back a strategy in which population growth would be tackled as a potentially disastrous environmental, social and industrial threat.”(9) The ultra-rich, in other words, have decided that it’s the very poor who are trashing the planet. You grope for a metaphor, but it’s impossible to satirise. James Lovelock, like Sir David Attenborough and Jonathan Porritt, is a patron of the Optimum Population Trust (OPT). It is one of dozens of campaigns and charities whose sole purpose is to discourage people from breeding in the name of saving the biosphere. But I haven’t been able to find any campaign whose sole purpose is to address the impacts of the very rich. The obsessives could argue that the people breeding rapidly today might one day become richer. But as the super wealthy grab an ever greater share and resources begin to run dry, this, for most of the very poor, is a diminishing prospect. There are strong social reasons for helping people to manage their reproduction, but weak environmental reasons, except among wealthier populations. The Optimum Population Trust glosses over the fact that the world is going through demographic transition: population growth rates are slowing down almost everywhere and the number of people is likely, according to a paper in Nature, to peak this century(10), probably at around 10 billion(11). Most of the growth will take place among those who consume almost nothing. But no one anticipates a consumption transition. People breed less as they become richer, but they don’t consume less; they consume more. As the habits of the super-rich show, there are no limits to human extravagance. Consumption can be expected to rise with economic growth until the biosphere hits the buffers. Anyone who understands this and still considers that population, not consumption, is the big issue is, in Lovelock’s words, “hiding from the truth”. It is the worst kind of paternalism, blaming the poor for the excesses of the rich. So where are the movements protesting about the stinking rich destroying our living systems? Where is the direct action against superyachts and private jets? Where’s Class War when you need it? It’s time we had the guts to name the problem. It’s not sex; it’s money. Israel scrambles jets after plane overflies nuclear reactor
JERUSALEM: The Israeli air force scrambled fighter jets on Tuesday after a light aircraft flew into restricted air space over its nuclear reactor in the southern Negev desert, officials said. The warplanes intercepted the aircraft and forced it to land at a nearby airstrip, where the pilot were handed over to civilian authorities for investigation, an army spokeswoman said. Police had no immediate comment but Israeli media reported that the pilot, who was flying from Rishon Letzion outside of Tel Aviv to the town of Arad near the Dead Sea, said that he lost his way. Aircraft are forbidden from flying over the reactor near the desert town of Dimona. Israel says the reactor is for research purposes, but defense analysts say it is the centre of Israel's undeclared nuclear weapons program. They say Dimona has been used to produce up to 200 nuclear warheads.
